Hello and welcome to Issue 4!We hope you like our cover page image; autumn for some is a favourite season as the colours change, the sun is lower and there is a fresh crispness in the air. We challenge you to get out your cameras, take some pictures of the falling leaves and the colours and send them in to us.
This month’s issue saw us take a lunch date out to Buchan Braes Hotel and into our own kitchen to make some shortbread! The clubs and groups pages have been updated and now that the Olympics and Paralympics have come to a close, you can get up off the couch and take part in the Peterhead Cycle Challenge.
Peterhead may also see the formation of a Civic Society. This is in the planning stages at the moment, but you can read a little more about this on page 18.
Remember to check out October’s events on our What’s On pages and keep checking our website, Facebook and Twitter feeds for updates and any new events as they come in. We are already working on Issue 5 – November 2102, if you have any suggestions as to what you would like to see in that issue get in touch with us!
Enjoy, and we will see you in November!

The Peterhead Cycle ChallengeNow that the Olympics, Paralympics and a fantastic summer of sport have come to a close, why not get out on your bike? The Peterhead Cycle Challenge has been launched recently and runs until the 31st of October.
Cycling is fun; you can get out with your friends and see more of where you live. What’s more, regular exercise such as cycling can help to combat stress!
All you need to do is go to visit www.bikeboost.org.uk/aberdeenshire and sign up as part of a participating organisation or as an individual. Log your journeys on your bike and it will calculate the calories burned. Once at the site you will also be able to download the cycle map for Peterhead and also visit the Aberdeenshire Council’s Cycling pages.
Challenge yourself, your family, friends and colleagues as a fun way to make a diff erence. Remember you can sign up at any point during the challenge... so go on sign up, get out and see what you can achieve.
Remember and be safe and be seen when you are out on your bike!

ShortbreadYour Town Centre decided to get in to the kitchen recently and try our hand at some homebaking. This month we show off our attempt at making some shortbread!
Ingredients:175g of Plain Flour
55g of Caster Sugar
115g of Salted Butter
Pinch of Salt
Preparation:Grab a baking sheet, greased ready to use
Cut your butter into small pieces
Preheat your oven to 150degC, 300degF or Gas Mark 2
Remember and wash your hands!
Get mixing:In a bowl mix together the fl our, caster sugar 1 and the salt.
Now take your small pieces of butter and 2 work into the dry ingredients until you end
up with a soft dough.
Roll the dough out on a lightly fl oured board 3 and use your cookie cutters. Place your
shapes on to your greased baking tray
Prick the dough with a fork all over. 4 Place in to the preheated oven for around 50 5 minutes.
Once coloured and fi rm, remove from 6 the oven and allow to cool on the baking
tray. Sprinkle some caster sugar over the
shortbread
After cooling, remove from the baking sheet 7 and place on a wire rack to cool further.
We used round cookie cutters but why not try
and get some diff erent shaped cookie cutters for
Halloween or Christmas!
If you tried this recipe or have a different recipe to make shortbread, get in touch.
Send in your comments and pictures to [email protected]
Enjoy!

Lunch for two?We recently took a trip out for a spot of lunch to the Buchan Braes Hotel in the Buchan Braes complex at Boddam. Th is was somewhere where we had not dined at before, for lunch or dinner. We had heard some good things about the food, so decided to give it a try.
Th e interior is very tastefully decorated with a luxurious feel and dining can be in the lounge or in the open kitchen grill room. We opted to be seated in the more informal lounge and tried the 2 courses for £12. Th e menu we were told changes weekly and available Monday to Saturdays 12pm till 2pm. I did think that perhaps the two courses might have been a choice between starters or dessert, but it was starters and main course. It would have been nice to have had an option of either.
Th ere was plenty of choice for both starters and main courses and our waitress duly informed us of the specials for the day without us asking or looking for the specials board. I settled on the Sweet Chilli Beef Garlic Croute and my companion went for the Prawn Marie Rose with a
boiled egg. We didn’t have to wait too long before getting the starters. Th e beef was steaming when it arrived and was nice and tender. Th e chilli sauce was not too spicy but gave a nice little aft er kick. Th e prawns were done nicely with a sauce that was neither too much or overpowering.
Our choice of mains was breaded lemon sole fi llets and a gammon and pineapple salad. Portion sizes were substantial for a lunch time. Th e two lemon sole fi llets for me were just right, although I must say that I have had better chips - they were just not to my liking, too crispy and crunchy. Th e salad was a salad; nothing more, nothing less. Well apart from some more chips! It couldn’t be faulted though as it came with plenty of gammon, fresh pineapple and a good selection of salad vegetables.
If you are looking for a quiet relaxed lunch in nice surroundings, why not try the Buchan Braes Hotel? Will we be back? Yes. Perhaps even for dinner. But as the menu changes every week, we just may make it a lunch date again.

When was the last time you stopped to look around and
admire the fantastic buildings that Peterhead has? Buildings
which go back many, many years and some of which have
been photographed as part of the Peterhead Today project.
Wouldn’t it be good to know a bit more about how some of
the buildings were built the way they were, who built them
and why? This would and could give a bigger story to the
buildings of Peterhead for future generations to explore.
Of course architecture is not just about old buildings; it
applies to new ones as well. With this in mind, Kevin O’Brien
who is an architect in Peterhead with McAdam Design has
sounded out various groups and individuals about the
formation of a Civic Society in Peterhead. You might ask
“What would a Civic Society bring to Peterhead?”
A Peterhead Civic Society would be engaged in
campaigning, commenting on and encouraging
improvements to buildings, historic areas, new
developments and the general fabric of the town and
surrounding area. When up and running, the group could
help generate interest, investment and even tourism to
Peterhead and is something that Your Town Centre fully
support.
We took a look around Scotland and did you know there is
a free annual event during September called Doors Open
Days? We at Your Town Centre believe that this is something
that Peterhead should be getting involved with. The event
opens up interesting buildings and landmarks, even fi shing
boats, to the public that may not otherwise have access.
One that really caught our eye was the chance to visit the
Irn Bru factory. Who wouldn’t want to go and visit that?
Now we may not have an Irn Bru factory here in Peterhead,
but we do have buildings and landmarks of interest that can
lend itself to be part of the event in future.
If you are interested in the Civic Society, keep watching
for more details as they develop and if you have any
comments or suggestions, please do get in touch with
us here at Your Town Centre or you can contact Kevin on
More details of Doors Open Days can be found at
www.DoorsOpenDays.org.uk and the Peterhead Today
project can be found at www.PeterheadToday.com
