Broadway and Beyond began 39th Season with a Visit from Doc... Our Broadway and Beyond Series began its 39th season as Doc Severinsen and his Big Band paid us a visit in October. We had a wonderful audience turn out to see 89 year old Doc, who entertained with big band favorites, his famous charm, and his even more famous attire! November brought us the 20 th anniversary tour of RENT, with a full house of “Rent- heads” from several states, and the cast did not disappoint! All the way from London, The Swingles joined us on December 3 to ring in the holidays with their a capella yuletide selections. This performance (one of only four U.S. appearances for the award-winning vocalists) was supported in part by the Arts Midwest Touring Fund, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional contributions from The Ohio Arts Council and the Crane Group, which helped us make this show available to children and families from Project Jericho, South Vienna School and TAC Industries... a great way to begin the holidays! A tribute to Roy Orbison and the Everly Brothers, an exciting evening of Celtic music and step dancing, and two national tours of Broadway performances are on their way as our Broadway and Beyond Series continues. Visit www.springfieldartscouncil.org for tickets and details about enjoying a night out at the theater! First Fall Wine Tasting a Success Buckeye Sports Lodge was the place to be as The Springfield Arts Council hosted our first Fall Wine Tasting on Saturday, November 19, 2016. With over 200 people in attendance, seventy wines to sample, and Patrick Dawson strumming the guitar all night, the Fall Wine Tasting became a celebration of wine and the arts! Heidelberg Distributing donated the tasting wines and supplied specialty wines for a live auction. Ohio Valley Surgical Hospital sponsored this fun evening, and with the help of an enthusiastic group of community members and SAC board members, our Fall Wine Tasting raised over $6,000 to benefit the Summer Arts Festival! Thanks to everyone who attended who contributed their time and energy to make this special fund-raiser such a success! Youth Arts Ambassadors Bring “Alice” to life at the new John Legend Theater On November 17-18, our Youth Arts Ambassadors traveled “down the rabbit hole” to present “Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr.” Eight weeks of rehearsal prepared our 32 young actors (grades 5-12) as well as ten youth tech assistants for the journey; Project Jericho provided a beautiful backdrop, Ambassadors and parents built the set and helped with costumes, and the Springfield City School District’s John Legend Theater transformed into Wonderland as more than 650 people enjoyed this classic production, the very first musical to be staged at the new theater! The Youth Arts Ambassadors are already anticipating and planning upcoming workshops, a cabaret dinner theater performance in April, and a production of “Annie Jr.” at the 2017 Summer Arts Festival. Arts Alive! and Arts in the Classroom Programs Shared Message of Diversity Recognizing diversity and our connection to others through our own unique journey, David Harrell, an internationally recognized actor, speaker and disability advocate, visited the Springfield Arts Council’s Arts in Education program to present The Power of Story, using his unique narrative to bring us awareness of our shared humanity. With a variety of examples from his own experience,

David guided area students in this special Arts in the Classroom program to think outside the box and look more closely at how the use of story and storytelling can increase our relationships to others. The Arts Alive! partnership also presented a workshop with David on December 6 at the Heritage Center of Clark County, made available to all Clark County educators at no cost.

Arts Alive! is a partnership with city and county schools, Clark State Performing Arts Center, Wittenberg University, The Springfield Museum of Art, and the Springfield Arts Council, in collaboration with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts innovative “Partners in Education” initiative.
