YOUTH GLOBAL COMPETENCE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
Purpose
The ASEAN University Network (AUN) was established under the auspices of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with primary objective to strengthen and expand cooperation among leading universities in ASEAN. The AUN has continually conducted a wide range of activities through fostering solidarity among ASEAN scholars and academicians, developing academic and professional human resources, conducting educational and cultural youth activities and enabling the dissemination of information among ASEAN academic community as well as among its Dialogue Partners. Republic of Korea (ROK) has been established its strong partnership with AUN for almost 10 years. Under the AUN-ROK cooperation, the area of activities covered academic exchange, student exchange, academic conference and scholarships. In enhancing ASEAN perspective to Korean students, a special programme was initiated namely “Youth Global Competence Improvement Project”. The programme come up with a concept of providing Korean Students a unique chance to discover the variety of Southeast Asia’s culture, history, education, politics and business.
Expected Outcomes
Participating Students will:
1. Earn direct experiences and insightful knowledge on the diversity of education and cultures of ASEAN;
2. Obtain knowledge and understanding in various ASEAN contexts, which could further be developed into their future career;
3. Learn and get better understanding of ASEAN-Korea relations through direct people-to-people contacts;
4. Establish the sustainable network of friendship among Korean student participants and ASEAN students, and
5. Enhance student’s personal development and social skills and the advancement of their English language communication.

Singapore
On 14th August 2011, the Korean participants arrived in Singapore. During their
4 days, the students had a chance to learn and understand the locals’ contexts
and had direct people-to-people contacts with the Singaporean students. This
would help open up visions and perspectives of participating students and
broaden their senses.

After the welcome remarks, the Get-together activity between the participating Korean students and NUS Students’ Korean Culture Interest Group started. During this activity, the Singaporean and the Korean students exchange ideas and knowledge and also engaged in the extensive discussion of the differences between cultures. Moreover, the Singaporean students who attended the exchange programme in Republic of Korea shared their experiences while they were in the programme and thus help broaden perspectives of the living life abroad.

The participating Korean Students then went on the city tour to explore Singapore and its vicinity. During the city tour, the students visit Kampong Glam (Muslim Quarter), Little India, (ethnic neighbourhood found in Singapore that has Tamil cultural
elements.), and China Town; where they learn about historical facts why Singapore is so diverse in culture.

students’ alumni from CU made the presentation displaying their lives during
the stay in the Republic of Korea. Later during the activities in Bangkok, the
alumni acted as a liaison to help guide the Korean students and directed
answers for inquiries made by the participants.

The Workshop Session on Thai Cultural
Performance was organized by Faculty of Fine Arts,
Chulalongkorn University. The first session was the lecture provided by Dr. Malinee Achayutthakan to provide history and background information of the traditional Thai dance to the Korean students. The second session, the participating students had a chance to try out the Thai dance having students from Faculty of Fine Arts participated as the instructors.

Visiting Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand
Special Lecture on ASEAN-ROK Relations by Mr. Paisan Rupanichkij, Director of ASEAN Division II, Department of ASEAN Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand. There, the Korean students learn on the international relations between ASEAN Member Countries and Republic of Korea concerning the economic interconnectedness and the cultural relations between the two. The AUN Executive Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nantana Gajaseni and the AUN Executive Deputy Director Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti joined the group during the presentation.

Visiting UNESCO, Bangkok Office
Since 1961, UNESCO Bangkok, the Asia-Pacific Regional Bureau for Education
and Cluster Office for the six “Mekong” countries, Thailand, Myanmar, Lao
PDR, and Singapore, and indirectly through UNESCO country Offices in Hanoi
and Phnom Penh, promotes peace and human development through
education, sciences, culture, communication and information. On the Friday
afternoon of 19 August 2011, the Korean participants visited the UNESCO

Office and had attended the special lecture by Dieter Schlenker, Chief of the
Information and Knowledge Management, UNESCO, Bangkok.
Visiting Embassy of the Republic of Korea
In the evening, the students visited the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to
the Kingdom of Thailand and had a chance to meet with H.E. Ambassador
Chung Hae Moon. At the end of the session, the group photo was taken, along
with the granted certificates for the participants.

Grand Palace
The Korean students visited the Grand Palace and had cultural exposures
experiences. The site is the place for tourists’ destination. The local guide
accompanied the group to illustrate the historical information.

Museum of Siam
Museums in Thailand have been traditionally
boring and dull places to spend an afternoon.
Now all of that has changed with the grand
opening of the Museum of Siam on
Sanamchai Road in Bangkok. Located in the
former premises of the Ministry of Commerce,
the museum is just a short walking distance
south of the Grand Palace and Wat Pho. This
new museum tries to answer the question,
“Who are the people of Siam?” Through a
series of exhibitions in different rooms, the

history from past to present

Evaluation Analysis
Singapore
The overall result of the Singapore evaluation is good to excellent while the category that
tends to fall behind the others is the hotel accommodation: the Fragrance Imperial Hotel.
The special lecture by Assoc. Prof. Victor Savage and Assoc. Prof. Albert Teo received
averagely good to excellent response from Korean students. Comparatively speaking, the
activities that receive excellent responses are the cultural exposures activities and city tour
where more interactive elements are being put into practice.
Thailand
In Thailand, most of the results receive excellent feedback while minorities of responses
receives fair to good scores. The overall scores in Thailand are comparatively dominant to
the Singapore’s.
Evaluation result
The overall score of both targeting countries is good. The completed questionnaires by the
participating Korean students display satisfactory results. Even though some of the students
have minor language difficulties but the overall result of the lecture session receives good
responses. The students seem to enjoy the cultural exposure activities both in Singapore
and Thailand.

Kim Sieun At the Incheon Airport, we met in one place. All of us were a little nervous to be representatives of Korea and to meet new people. However, we were more excited by the anticipation of new experiences in Singapore and Thailand. In Singapore, on the first day, we had a simple orientation and introduced ourselves. It was a good chance to know each other. Most of our activities were held in NUS in Singapore. We met members of 'NUS student's korean culture interesting group'. We asked questions about NUS, culture of Singapore, and many things and they answered in all sincerity. Eating lunch together, we became closer and exchanged our numbers and addresses. Through this experience, we could know more about NUS from the view of NUS students. We also took lectures from professors in NUS. The most interesting lecture for me was Culture of Southeast Asia from Professor Victor Savage. I could know more about Singapore such as population, economy, and advanced water treatment technologies of Singapore. Above all, advanced water treatment technology of Singapore was amazing. They purified a mass amount of water from toilets and made it into drinking water. A brand name of it was NEwater. We also drank it and it had no differences from normal water. Korea is one of the countries that lack water. I think it is time to find a new way to get water. On the final day, we visited Kampong glam, little India, China town, Raffle's landing site, Merlion Park, and Suntec city. We took a lot of photos on this day and enjoyed the final day in Singapore. Then, we went to Thailand. In Thailand, we took lectures in Chulalongkorn University. After a lecture about 'Global geopolitics and Asia' from professor Surat Horachaikul, we had get-together activities time with students from Chulalongkorn University. After that time, we spent 3 days with them. I went shopping together with one of them, and on the final day in Thailand, I gave her a letter. We became so friendly and I really miss her. After get-together time, we learned traditional dance of Thailand. Learning dance was enjoyable. Everyone practiced hard for 2hours and performed in Chulalongkorn University. I made a few mistakes on the stage but it remains as good experience in my memory. We visited ASEAN and UNESCO office in Thailand. In UNESCO, we got a lecture in Korean. However, it was not entirely lecture. Most of time, we asked questions of how to get into UNESCO or their thoughts about education of Korea. They gave us valuable words that really help us for our future. On the final day, we went to National Discovery Museum Institute. The museum was very interesting. We could see the process of development of Thailand. We could also wear traditional clothes of Thailand take interesting photos. I could unterstand cultures of Thailand well through this experience. At the airport, everyone felt a sense of frustration. 7 days seemed long before we started, but the time passed very quickly. I think all of us would feel like that. However, it is not the end. We will contact through the club or facebook and even meet at workshop on December. It was good to see eveyone I met through this short trip. I will miss them a lot.

Hello, it’s me Wooyong Jeong. I am one of members of Youth Global Competence Improvement. I hope you remember me. Before I tell you what I had learned from the project. I want to say thank you. Without you and Korn we couldn’t do anything in Singapore and Thailand. So thank you again! Before I came to Singapore and Thailand I made two purposes for myself. The first purpose is finding more information about international relationship between Korea and ASEAN, because of my father and mother I’m interested in international relationship. So I found more information about relationship between Korea and ASEAN. I was also impressed by Surat Horachaikul’s lecture because he changed the way I thought. I thought ASEAN is a small community and there will be no relationship between Korea and ASEAN. However, It was not. ASEAN is big community and there is a lot of relationship between Korea and ASEAN. Korea is really important to ASEAN and also important partner. I have some friends from North Korea and one of them came to Thailand as a pass to Korea. That is why he has no good memories about Thailand. He said he only remember black wall in Korean foreign minister affair. So I want to make a guide book for him and I want to change his mind and this is my second purpose. I want to say thank you again and I had a great time because of you guise!! 2011/AUG/24

Che Rin Kim For about a week in August, I had a wonderful chance to join Youth Global Competence Improvement (Singapore-Thailand). Since I had spent a couple years in the United States when I was young and experienced many cultures because of friends from different places of the world, I had been always interested in other countries’ cultures. Luckily, I found this Youth Global Competence Improvement Project and decided to apply. Since then, I was very eager and excited to start this program. During this program, with other friends and students, including members of ASEAN University Network and students from National University of Singapore and Chulalongkorn University, I was able to enjoy Singapore and Thailand. First of all, there were several lectures prepared for our group by professors of NUS (National University of Singapore). During the lectures, we talked about social entrepreneurship in Southeast Asia and Singapore’s changing cultural landscapes. Through this time, I was able to learn more about what was changing in Singapore and how such a small city could become a developed country. Thankfully, we also had some time to tour around Singapore and enjoy the beautiful country. Some of the places that we went to are Little India, Chinatown, Merlion Park, Suntec City, and also Night Safari. While we were traveling to these places, I was very excited to see different cultures mixed in one place. In Singapore, I was also surprised at how clean the city was and it was very nice to see how much the government cares about the citizens by giving homes and shelters. During this program, we also went to Thailand. In Thailand, we had an honorable opportunity to visit UNESCO located in Bankok and listen to what kinds of programs and organizations are held by UNESCO. Also, I enjoyed visiting the Embassy of the Republic of Korea and having a chance to have a talk with the Korean ambassador. Lastly, I saw and learned a lot about the culture and history of Thailand by visiting the Grand Palace and the Museum of Siam. Aside from traveling and visiting famous sites, I would like to write a little about my experience with Thai food. Personally, since I like seafood, I loved having shrimps for my meals even though some of them had flavors that Koreans were not used to. However, this kind of experience was something that I was able to have only because I was in Thailand. Therefore, this remains as a good memory for me. To improve this project and program, I think that it would be better to have more time to spend with the students of the universities that we visited. Other than that, I would like to say that it was a great opportunity for me to experience different cultures and enjoy two countries, even in a very short time. If I could have another chance, I would love to visit Singapore and Thailand again and I sincerely recommend this program to students in Korea interested in globalization and Asia being one.

We went to Singapore at August 14th. I just arrived in Seoul but I run away to Incheon airport. it was so busy schedule to me anyway I get in the plane to go Singapore. it was kind of long time to long in plane. so first day of my Singapore life was so nervous. because everything was new, none information of Singapore's road, food or people. so I came back to hotel and stay in my room whole day. next day I went to NUS. it was huge. I never saw before. I can’t remember everything what I did in NUS. but I have a special thing in NUS. when we went to library in NUS. it was pretty shock to me. because I didn't know how passion of study. because I thought if I will be NUS student, I will be play all the time. then I will be regret. but it was wrong. I was feel so shock. so I will work hard to study. also the foods were not bad. and I really enjoyed at safari zoo. it was so fun. Yeah finally Thailand. there so many to say. first nicgun one of my favorite superstar in Thailand. I am really like him. so that is one of reason of I was exciting to go Thailand. also they have a plan to go UNESCO. so it sound was so interesting to go their. because I really want to work in UNESCO. also I did a question, when we were at UNESCO. my question was what if I musicion, but I would like to work in UNESCO. it can be work? so they said. I can because they have education part in UNESCO. so I can work music education part. I want to do that right now. also every thai food was not okay too me. because they have really strong smell. but it was so funs to do. I was really enjoyed it. thank you for everything^-^

Yun Sun Oh ONE WEEK EXPERIENCE Visiting Singapore and Thaiand for a week, most people would say "A week is too short to learn something." I also thought if I could learn something that maybe can affect my life, my goal. However, I learned more than I thought, that affected part of my life and my goal. First half of the week, we visited Singapore. Before arriving here, I was so curious about how education system works in here and about patriarchal government in Singapore. While visiting NUS, I learned the answer from my question. It was surprising that the top 3 university in Singapore is national; since the top3 university in korea is private school (except National University of Seoul). Since these universities are national, not only NUS students but also Singapore people can use faculties such as library. That actually showed how patriarchal government affected in education, and how education system works. Moreover from the lecture by Mr. Goh was fantastic. I was pretty impressed in the lecture about social entrepreneurship. It taught me how companies are helping the unemployed- getting them employed by doing some projects. Also, it was interesting that diverse culture exists in one country that is smaller than seoul, how people coexists. To describe in one word, I think Singapore is a country of asian-melting pot, since so many cultures exist in one country. This country seemed as a one family and the government as a father. The other half in Thai, it was gorgeous. I can hardly describe my feelings in this written form. Visiting UNESCO, and listening to ambassador in embassy, this is not a chance that I can easily get. I mean, what these people talked about is really fascinating since the topic was related with my goal (becoming a diplomat). Also visiting Chulalongkorn university and having cultural exchange was fun. Dancing was great too. It looked like easy but its really hard. ( I just noticed that nothings easy) Actually when I came back to Korea, I taught my friends the basic steps of this Thai dance. However this is not all that made me to enjoy my trip in Thai. The students from Chulalongkorn university, these people made me so touching. From start to the end, they followed us everyday every moment. Oummy, May, Aik-Q, Prae, and Boll was them. We had fun shopping, visiting around Bangkok with them. These students must have been tired because of the pressure that we are not familiar in here and we would be lost. If they weren't in this part of trip, I think this trip would have been hard trip for Korean students to enjoy. I really learned a lot. This led me to think about my goals, and the diverse cultures living in this world. Maybe this one week was the greatest week ever I had. If I have a chance like this, I would be happy to apply for it. Thank you AUN, for this wonderful trip in Singapore and Thai, and the programmer, for this great program. This was a week that I won’t ever forget.

Kim So Yeon We, humans, have lived their life by communicating with lots of people. In the republic of Korea, which is one of the small countries in the world, knowing the variousness about history, culture, education and policy of East-Asian countries is same as one of ways to keep pace with future world. August, 14th, 2011, our team gathered in Incheon international airport for visiting to Singapore and Thailand. We arrived at Singapore in the afternoon. The first place we went was the National University of Singapore (NUS). This university is famous for its broad and influential campuses. If there is any special educational policy, which is "Bring the world to NUS, take NUS students to the world.” I thought this policy is fit with this global university. After we took a lecture about NUS, we fortunately had a time to talk with NUS students. By having conversations with them, I could know what a real global citizenship is and I felt that the world is quickly becoming a global village. In Singapore, the most memorable experience was the campaign I prepared for our country's natural scenery. Recently, the republic of Korea, especially in Jeju Island, is trying to be in top 7 ranks of New 7 wonders. With this important reason, before I left our country, I made some banners and pamphlets for this campaign. So wearing banners on our shoulders and giving foreigners many pamphlets which involves the information of the scenery of Jeju Island made us feel like we, being a diplomat. Of course, some foreigners looked at me strangely but I gave all the pamphlets to lots of foreigners. Through this valuable experience, I certainly knew that being a diplomat who informs their own country should understand foreign languages and be an expert when it comes to their country. August 17th, 2011, it was the very time for us to leave Singapore and depart to Thailand. When we reached Thailand, Bangkok was raining cats and dogs. Someday before, on the internet, I found the must-do thing in Thailand is taking a massage. Just in time, near our hotel, there were a few massage shops. The massage we took helped us relax so to have a nice condition for next day. The first place we visited in Thailand was Chulalongkorn University. We had a lecture about 'Global geopolitics and Asia' which indicated the importance of Asian countries in the world. Specifically, professor Surat Horachaikul stressed the context, 'Unity in diversity'. Until now, we heard lots of international issues through the media or press and we could grasp each country’s interests with other countries. Even, we could see some particular countries saying critical ments to other countries. However, eventually, the essential power to lead this generation is not the borders geographically set, but united humans. With this context, 'Unity in diversity' is indispensably pursued lesson in modern society. The nations we visited also have their own unique position and cultures in this world. And when we know that we can communicate with them and can find morals from them, it is certain that we already had an opportunity to experience the lesson, Unity in diversity. Everyone knows that Thailand has lots of international organizations so the next place we went was ASEAN. The point of the lecture in ASEAN was the relationship between the republic of Korea and ASEAN. In the middle of the lecture, professor said that the republic of Korea is one of the important partners with Thailand. In 1997, when there was a foreign currency crisis in south Korea, all the people in south Korea started to gather lots of gold in their home and all the efforts were put together to save our country. As a result, the republic of Korea, which received relief supplies from other developed countries, now supplies relief to other countries. At that time, we might be a child who doesn’t know what is happening in the nation, but it is true that we strongly feel proud than any other countries. Likewise, the existence of our country helped other countries have possibility to develop in various fields. The second place was UNESCO. Originally, the areas that UNSECO deals with are education, culture and science. The most stereotypes Korean usually do, however, is UNESCO do not care about

education. And lecture in UNESCO helped me to do away with the fixed idea. After I listened the roles and purposes of UNESCO, I asked some questions about the fluctuation education systems in Korea and the very time the system will be stable. We participated in this program to achieve our own dreams and goals. The last day of this program was actually, a little bit sad to part from many friends in our team but the truth is that we learned a lot and experienced a lot by getting out narrow areas we have lived in. The beneficial lessons for individuals' life come when they feel a true realization with people regardless of their ages. High school students, university students and social workers. All of them go back to their life with unforgettable enlightenments. 7 days in Singapore and Thailand could be short time to someone and be long time to someone. However, the peerless fact that we enjoyed our time in foreign countries is invaluable. Though we successfully finished this program, we will have a chat in online network and continuously keep tabs with everyone we met. Journey is a means that let people have higher discernment. The world is wide, so broad the opportunities of experience are. Lastly, I want to thank all of the persons concerned with this project who gave the lesson that there is wider world than the world we always have lived in.
