Dear Friends, It seems that tragedy surrounds the world sometimes. Listening to the news can be quite discouraging. While good things happen (how great is it that all the soccer players and their coach were rescued from the cave in Thailand!), this is tempered by story after story of untimely deaths, violence and hatred happening around the world and in our own communities. In the midst of all of this, we might ask where is the hope for our world? In our hymnal, we have a category of hymns called “Lament” hymns. One hymn (#704 – When Pain of the World Surrounds Us) captures my thoughts and prayers for the world and myself in such a time as this:

When pain of the world surrounds us with darkness and despair, when searching just confounds us with false hopes everywhere, when lives are starved for meaning and destiny is bare, we are called to follow Jesus and let God’s healing flow through us. We see with fear and trembling our aching world in need, confessing to each other our wastefulness and greed. May we with steadfast caring the hungry children feed. We are called to follow Jesus and let’s God’s justice flow through us. The church is a holy vessel the living waters fill to nourish all the people, God’s purpose to fulfill. May we with humble courage be open to God’s will. We are called to follow Jesus and let God’s Spirit flow through us. We praise you for our journey and your abundant grace, your saving word that guided a struggling human race. O God, with all creation, your future we embrace. We are called to follow Jesus and let God’s changes flow through us.

We are called to follow Jesus – and let Christ shine through us in this hurting world. May all of us take up that challenge to, as it says in the hymn, “Let God’s Spirit flow through us.”

In Christ,

Pastor Janet Wold

The Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon Bible study classes are on hiatus

until the fall. Watch for information on upcoming studies in the Saintly News and the Sunday Bulletin.

New Clavinova in Sanctuary A new Yamaha Clavinova was was purchased with funds donated by members and especially from the Lois Lapp and Rosie Hyle Memorials. Thanks to Ken Lapp and Pam Hyle for designating these funds for the new Clavinova and to all who also donated. It was delivered Thursday, July 12th and it's ready to go. It sounds great and will serve us for at least 15 to 20 years. What a blessing for our worship experience! The older Clavinova was moved to the Choir Practice/Sunday School room. The old upright piano that is in there will be given away to anyone who has a need for this instrument. Please contact the church office if you are interested.

Property News

Thanks to a great group of members who continue to volunteer their time to maintain our lawn and gardens for us! Great job! We're working on a couple of additional projects as well:

Painting: The white par t of the outside of the church (facing Route 2) has been painted with costs covered by generous donations to the project. Furnace: The main furnace for the office area needs to be replaced. We are in the process of getting quotes on the replacement. Again, we have received some donations ($1280) to help cover the cost of this replacement; more would be welcome to cover the approximate $2,000 cost. Trees: We have a number of trees on the bank between the church and Route 2 that need to be taken down. We are gathering quotes for the removal of the trees as well.

Again, thanks to everyone for their time, talents and gifts that benefit All Saints and our church building and grounds. There are a number of individuals that continue to step up, or take it upon themselves to help us out in a number of ways. We couldn't do it without each and every one of them!

Are you looking for a deeper faith life? Want to be better equipped for Christian Service? Curious about what God has planned for you? ...then diakonia™ may be just what you’re looking for! What is diakonia™? The diakonia™ Program is a two-year process of spiritual formation and theological education for baptized members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America or anyone wishing in good faith to study these teachings. This process occurs in three basic ways:

• by thorough grounding in the classic seminary disciplines of practical, systematic, historical and Biblical theology; • by identifying particular skills and aptitudes in ministry and encouraging their use in the local parish; • by providing spiritual growth through worship, retreats, and a supportive community of fellow students, mentors, and instructors.

These are the tools diakonia™ uses to help equip God’s people for service in parish and community ministries. The primary theme and focus of the diakonia™ experience is found in this word of Scripture: “Let the one who would be great among you be your servant (diakonos).” If you would like more information on the diakonia™ program, speak to Pastor Janet, or All Saints’ diakonia™ graduates: Alan Wold, Skip Richardson, Kay Johnson, or Michel Williams.

Thank you to all who donated items for MotherHouse Crisis

Nursery

We boxed up 59 baby bottles, 23 pairs of shoes, 19 towels, 10 blankets and $70 of cleaning

supplies. We delivered the boxes to MotherHouse on June 27th and they were so thankful. Your efforts are greatly appreciated and will be so welcome for those children and families in their time of need.

Quilters The quilters plan to meet on August 2nd from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the church. Once again we want to say “Thank You” to everyone who donated sheets and fabric to help us with making mission quilts for people in need. This month we received more donations than ever and truly appreciate your generosity. A bag with crochet thread to tie quilts was donated – so many beautiful colors. Thank You! Our work and fellowship continues. Please join us on the first Thursday of any month.

The First Stone by Bodie and Brock Thorne -Two thousand years separate the tragic stories of Mary Magdalene and Rachel Sachar, yet both their lives lead to Yeshua of Nazareth in Old Jerusalem.

The Sweetgum Ladies by Beth Pattillo -The Knit Lit Society consists of six women who meet at the Sweetgum Christian Church. Their love of knitting and passion for books connects them. Their challenges and love for each other creates an emotional bond between them.

The Silent Gift by Michael Landon Jr. and Cindy Kelley - Mary escapes her abusive husband and takes her deaf mute son, Jack, to Minnesota. Set in the 1930's depression, they experience suffering and kindness not only from the economy, but also from a strange prophetic gift that Jack suddenly possesses. Where Do I Go? A Yada Yada House of Hope Novel by Neta Jackson - Gabrielle agrees to move to Chicago with her ambitious, controlling husband Philip. There she feels God's call to become a program director at a woman's shelter. A Penny for Your Thoughts by Mindy Starns Clark - Callie is sent to investigate the death of a family friend of her employer. It doesn't take long to realize the family has secrets and she is in serious danger. She needs God to guide her with her investigative skills to find the killer before she becomes the next victim.

The DreamLeaders Initiative is Coming to All Saints Lutheran Sept. 15 & 16!

All Saints will be hosting a DreamLeaders Initiative weekend, September 15 & 16. Designed to encourage, inspire, and challenge us to pursue God sized dreams for our future, it will allow us to have greater Kingdom impact in our neighborhood and city. The Initiative is designed to promote renewal in today’s church and will be led by Pastor Jeff Linman, Pastor of Renewal and Redevelopment at First Lutheran Church in Monmouth, Illinois. Pastor Jeff previously served for 20 years as the founding pastor of Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church in Orlando where the Initiative was birthed. The weekend contains two components:

A Saturday Workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the fellowship hall for congregational leaders and all All Saints members interested in dreaming together about our future. The day will include Biblically based elements of encouragement (naming our fears), inspiration (dreaming some dreams), and challenge (identifying the obstacles). Each workshop section will be tailored to our congregation's unique context and season. Lunch will be provided.

A Sunday Worship Experience called "Created to Dream" and Forum that will engage the entire congregation in the journey and bring everyone on-board. Pastor Jeff will preach at both services and lead an adult forum presentation during the education hour (9:15-10:15 am). The results of the Saturday workshop will be shared and feedback invited from those who participated so that the entire congregation can be invited into the journey and the Initiative’s impact extended. When leaders and members are aligned in pursuit of God-sized visions and dreams, God’s power is released so that every congregation can realize Kingdom impact through their mission and ministry! Pastor Jeff will also lead a brief Q&A for anyone interested in further conversation after worship for those who were not able to attend the earlier forum.

Ephesians 3:20 teaches us that by the power at work within us, God is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine...or dream! Because attitude impacts outcome, inspiring renewed faith and hope is a key step in any congregational renewal effort seeking increased Kingdom impact. To learn more about the DreamLeaders Initiative and do some dreaming about the future at All Saints, plan to join us the weekend of September 15 & 16. For further information visit www.BeDreamLeaders.com. Would you like to help offset the cost of hosting the DreamLeader’s Weekend? Any donation would be appreciated! Checks should be made out to All Saints, with the memo “DreamLeaders.” Pastor Jeff is being very generous with his time, however we need to pay for his mileage and want to give him an honorarium for his time with us. Housing and food costs have been donated.
