YOUTH MINISTRY ABIDE – Tues., Jan 21. Every third Tuesday all ages and families gather in Mount St. Francis’ Chapel for personal prayer, reflective music, Eucharistic Adoration and, for those interested, the Sacrament of Penance & Reconciliation (Confession). No registration required. Stay a few minutes or the entire time. Event begins 6:30 pm and ends at 8:30 pm. High School Youth Retreats. Retreats are meant to serve as a catalyst for our spiritual life by beginning or rejuvenating our relationship with Christ. They give us rest from the noise of the world, providing clarity and intention on our path of discipleship. Through a personal encounter with Christ within a dynamic community, retreats form us in humility - where his power is made perfect. The retreats listed below, coordinated and hosted by Catalyst Catholic (formerly NADCYM) are led by a team of adult volunteers from the New Albany Deanery and held at Mt. St. Francis Retreat Center in Floyds Knobs, IN. SENIORS, YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS - THE SUMMIT RETREAT! (For High School Seniors) - February 13-16, 2020. Senior year of high school is a major summit in one’s life. A time to reflect on where we have come from and where we a going. This retreat seeks to empower high school seniors to take measure of their life and relationship with Jesus while looking towards the world with zeal and joy for the Gospel while making sense of the hills and valleys of life. $200 per person including lodging, food, and retreat materials. Registration & Retreat Info Online at: www.CATALYSTCATHOLIC.ORG TO THE HEIGHTS, Underclassmen Retreat / 9th-11th grades. February 29-March 1, 2020. Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati was a man of great virtue who lived by his motto “verso l’alto” or “to the heights”, focusing on the goal of heaven and sanctity. TO THE HEIGHTS Retreat invites teens to what it means to have a real and living relationship with Jesus and how that sanctifies oneself and the world around us. $125 per person including lodging, food, and retreat materials. Registration & Retreat Info Online at: www.CATALYSTCATHOLIC.ORG Holy Trinity Parish, 501 Cherrywood Road, Louisville, KY. Wednesday, January 29, 2020-7:00-9:30 pm. FOCUS ON 2020. I didn’t make New Year’s resolutions this year. They never seem to actually happen. Instead, for 2020, I decided to make plans—especially in my world of church music. First on the calendar is the Winter Chant Conference at St. Meinrad during the week of January 20-24. Chant is in my soul. I grew up singing the Gregorian chant Masses pre-Vatican II. There were at least four settings I knew in addition to the funeral Mass. I have played a lot of organ music based on chant tunes. I look forward to this opportunity to learn how to share the great tradition of chant with you. For something totally different, I will be traveling to Ireland and Scotland in the first week of March on tour with the Bellarmine University Oratorio Society. We are singing a couple of sacred pieces I think would work well with our choir. I get choir ideas from everywhere! A few weeks ago, I received a letter from one of my church music colleagues in a New Albany parish about the possibility of having another deanery choral festival during Lent. We have greatly enjoyed 3 or 4 programs like this in the past. This year the plan is to feature music for Lent sung by individual parish choirs and then to put the whole group together for some exciting music making. More information will be forth coming and I hope you will come hear a very inspirational musical celebration of our deanery parishes. In July, the National Association of Pastoral Musicians is having its huge conference in Louisville, KY. How great to have this in our own backyard! I have attended this conference several times in other parts of the country and it is always overwhelming with what can be learned about all facets of church music. Needless to say, I will start choir next fall with my head filled with all sorts of new ideas. Speaking of choir, we really enjoyed our Christmas program of duets and small groups—and hope you did, too. We are in the process of organizing more of that type of music with the possibility of adding more choral music to the Masses at which the full choir does not sing. The music will include Spirituals and different arrangements of familiar songs and hymns in multi-voice settings. And finally, I want to start a new music group! St. Joseph owns a three-octave set of Suzuki handchimes that I would like to dust off and add to our musical offerings during the liturgies. Go online to Youtube and listen to the beautiful sound of chimes. We already have the instruments to make that sound here! The chimes have been minimally used in the school, but they are NOT kid or toy instruments—they are legitimate instruments. Eight to ten players would be needed to get started. Music reading is a plus, but NOT required. Just be able to count to four and keep a steady beat. Details and sign up coming soon. So, 2020 is jam-packed with all sorts of new experiences that I hope to use to further inspire your participation and worship in the liturgies at St. Joseph. Happy New Year! ►Liturgical Year- January is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus. Jesus’ sacred name is the object of special devotion.

►Communion of Saints & Feasts Jan 12 – The Baptism of the Lord (also the Rosary’s First Luminous Mystery) Jan 13 – St. Hilary Jan 17 – St. Anthony, Abbot Jan 19 – 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Baptismal waters bring forth children of Light

and heirs of God! “…and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if

only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans 8:17) NAB

This Sunday, January 12, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord Jesus. This brings to a close the Christmas season. We recall Jesus’ second manifestation of himself to humanity, or his epiphany, which occurred at the River Jordan during his baptism. Jesus descended into the river to sanctify its waters and to give water the power to beget sons and daughters of God. The Presence of the Blessed Trinity is seen clearly in today’s gospel reading. This awesome event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. God is always intervening on behalf of his creatures and creation.

The Eastern Church calls this feast the Theophany because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan God appeared in three persons. Christ did not need baptism by his earthly cousin John the Baptist. Although Jesus appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was recognized "outwardly like unto ourselves", He was absolutely sinless! Jesus conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of the world".

Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted children of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin.

Merry Christmas! Today marks the final day

of the liturgical season of Christmas, as we

celebrate the feast of the Baptism of the Lord.

I hope this Christmas season has been for you

a time of great renewal of faith in our

loving Savior, a time of profound sharing in

the life of Christ with family and friends and

with the poor.

The Baptism of the Lord is a mystery with

so many levels and angles, drawing us in for

appreciation and contemplation. Consider

these insights from the Catechism:

“The baptism of Jesus is on his part the

acceptance and inauguration of his

mission as God’s suffering Servant. He allows

himself to be numbered among sinners; he is

already ‘the Lamb of God, who takes away

the sin of the world.’ Already he is

anticipating the ‘baptism’ of his bloody

death. Already he is coming to ‘fulfill all

righteousness,’ that is, he is submitting

himself entirely to his Father’s will: out of

love he consents to this baptism of death for

the remission of our sins. The Father’s voice

responds to the Son’s acceptance,

proclaiming his entire delight in his Son.

The Spirit whom Jesus possessed in fullness

from his conception comes to ‘rest on him.’

Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all

mankind. At his baptism ‘the heavens were

opened’—the heavens that Adam’s sin had

closed—and the waters were sanctified by

the descent of Jesus and the Spirit, a prelude

to the new creation.”

Let us give thanks to the Lord for

instituting so great a mystery to unite

himself to our sinful nature, to cleanse us

and save us from our sins, and to unite us to

his divine nature, to share his eternal life

with us. Let us not take this heavenly gift for

granted; let us live every day, every moment,

in the life of Christ.

Peace, Fr. Kyle
