MESSAGE FROM LEADERSHIPDear Friends and Supporters,

This was a particularly meaningful year for YouthBuild Philadelphia Charter School as we celebrated our 20th year of operation. In 1992, our doors opened at 6th and Catharine Streets to a class of 28 students. This year, 145 students graduated from our program in North Philadelphia with a high school diploma and an industry-recognized certification. Within six months, the majority of graduates were employed or enrolled in school – or both.

YouthBuild has expanded and evolved its groundbreaking work in career and technical education. Many students now earn two industry certifications before graduation and are better prepared for employment in today’s job market.

Meanwhile, other students completed post-secondary coursework with our college bridge partners through dual enrollment and summer bridge programming. Uniquely, we have found ways to follow up and support graduates not just to access opportunities, but to see them through to success in their post graduation endeavors.

Over the last 20 years, our organization has grown and transformed right along with our students and alumni. The school has grown in size, scope, staffing, and opportunities. All the while, we have stayed true to our core mission and purpose: helping motivated young people succeed.

Looking forward, we will continue to grow and adapt to meet the challenges facing out-of-school youth. We are as committed as ever to helping students overcome those challenges, pursue their dreams, and become contributing members and leaders in their community. Thousands of young people drop out of Philadelphia high schools annually, severely reducing their future career options. YouthBuild Philly offers these youth the opportunity to reclaim their education, earn a diploma, and change the trajectory of their lives through college and career opportunities. In 2011, 967 young people applied to YouthBuild for 213 slots.

There are few formal criteria to join our program. We serve 18 to 21 year old Philadelpia residents who have

dropped out of school. Using an interview and orientation process, we identify and enroll applicants who demonstrate the most motivation and determination to succeed. Our students come from communities deeply affected by the cycle of urban poverty. To help students break that cycle and continue their education, YouthBuild’s expert staff helpstudents address and overcome risk factors that could hinder their success. Here’s a snapshot of the challenges our students face:

CLASS OF 2012 PROFILE

Before YouthBuild, I was struggling with family issues, financial stability and had little self-esteem. I was kicked out of a couple of different schools because of fighting, selling drugs, and poor attendance. I was regularly suspended or in detention. I started cutting class to hang with the cool kids. I was scared of being teased about having good grades, so I flunked tests on purpose just so I could be a part of the in crowd. Basically, I was getting in the way of my own success.

It was a friend who told me about YouthBuild, and how I could get a trade and change my future. We both decided to apply together. I never thought I would get accepted, let alone complete my diploma, but now here I am.

This school has helped me in so many ways. It helped me to develop leadership skills that I didn’t know that I had. I learned useful personal and technical skills in the class-room and on the construction worksite. I have incorporated the core values of excellence, respect and perseverance into my daily life. I missed 108 days at my last school, but at YouthBuild I only missed two.

Furthermore, YouthBuild created a path for me, and college success is the next item on my agenda. Just days after my graduation, I started tak-ing classes at the Community College of Philadelphia.

My advice to my peers is this: Keep pushing. Don’t let any negativity around you make you who you are; keep those

core values of excellence, respect and perseverance with you always—now and in the future. Do what you have to do to be who you want to be. Always remember to take pride in the accomplishments of what you have learned.

AcademicsStudents spend half of their time at YouthBuild in the classroom, working towards a diploma and developing reading, math and critical thinking skills for success in postsecondary education. Every student takes clases in math, language arts, science, and social studies while at YouthBuild.

As they return to the classroom, students benefit from small classes led by experienced teachers, relevant course content, individualized learning supports, and individual tutoring.

Individual Supports and Life SkillsAdditional supports help students develop life skills to overcome challenges and achieve self-sufficiency as students and citizens. Case managers work individually with students to develop a comprehensive personal assessment of the student’s goals and risk factors. All students are also paired with an in-house mentor to serve as an additional source of support and motivation in the program.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

Students at YouthBuild Philly earn a high school diploma and industry recognized trade certification over the course of 12 to 16 months. Our program combines rigorous academics, hands-on job training, and community service.

The diploma and certification are offered as stepping stones to a lifetime of opportunity. Our program is designed to prepare students for further educational attainment, meaningful careers, and lifelong civic engagement.

ServiceAs they rebuild their lives, students participate in rebuilding their community through service learning. Students gain valuable work experience in their vocational track while volunteering in nursing homes, refurbishing computers for schools and nonprofits, and renovating formerly abandoned homes to be sold to low-income families.

As part-time AmeriCorps members, all Class of 2012 graduates contributed at least 675 hours of community service over the course of the year.

Vocational TrainingStudents prepare for employment in high-demand trades through a vocational program that integrates hands-on training, applied mathematics and science, and career development courses. YouthBuild’s three vocational programs – Healthcare, Building Trades, and IT & Business Administration – equip students with hard and soft skills, prepare students for work in a professional setting, and culminate with an industry-recognized credential.

The skills, supports and opportunities YouthBuild Philly offers students form the blueprint for their success, which they will build on for the rest of their lives. Our vision for our students’ success stretches far beyond the walls of our school. Even before their first day of school at YouthBuild, we tell students to start planning for their future after graduation.

YouthBuild’s six-person Transitions team helps student identify and plan for postsecondary goals and supports them on the journey to achieve those goals. We prepare students to continue building on their academic success at YouthBuild through completion of a college or other postsecondary degree, and equip them for success in a meaningful career.

YouthBuild’s innovative program prepares students for postsecondary success through:

EDUCATION: Postsecondary skills, ranging from professional dress to strong study skills, are integrated into every facet of the curriculum and program.

EXPOSURE: Students learn about their career and education options through guest speakers, interaction with alumni, visits to college campuses, and partnerships with local employers.

EXPERIENCE: During the summer prior to gradution, students who have completed their requirements have the option of advancing into college classes (see left) and internships while still receiving YouthBuild supports.

Thirteen members of the Class of 2012 spent the summer before graduation at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, preparing for matriculation into college by living in dorms and taking classes.

Another 27 students participated in the summer bridge program at Community College of Philadelphia, which prepared them to take credit-bearing courses in the fall.

YouthBuild Philly’s Transition Services team helps graduates build on their success after graduation. Alumni and staff stay connected through social media outreach, visits to college campuses, reunions, and special alumni events.

During the first year after graduation, alumni receive intensive, individualized support to ensure that their postsecondary placement goes well. All graduates receive help with job searches and referrals, college applications, and financial aid forms. Graduates who provide proof of enrollment in postsecondary education are eligible to receive a transit pass through YouthBuild, reducing their monthly costs and facilitating their access to school.

College-bound graduates are eligible to apply for scholarships from YouthBuild’s Scholarship Fund which can be used for non-tuition costs such as textbooks. Twelve graduates from the class of 2012 were awarded scholarships at YouthBuild’s August commencement ceremony.

COMMUNITY IMPACTMLK Day of Service

In honor of the 17th Annual Greater Philadelphia Martin Luther King Day of Service YouthBuild Philly partnered with Opport-UNITY (a local organization offering construction training to ex-offenders and people in addiction recovery)to rehabilitate their new training facility in the historical Engine Company No. 11 building on South Street. Prior to the desegregation of the Philadelphia Fire Department in 1952, Engine 11 was Philadelphia’s de facto African American firehouse.

Spring Break Service Trip

The Spring Break Service trip is an annual tradition and a unique opportunity for students to experience a new environment, and expand their worldview while engaging in service. This year, a group of staff and students traveled to Utuado, Puerto Rico to clear trails and roads on an organic coffee farm in the central region of the island. This work will count toward the 675 hours of volunteer service that every YouthBuild student must complete to graduate.

Young Leaders in ServiceClass of 2012 student Tahir Ingram received a First Place rec-ognition for the YouthBuild AmeriCorps Award for Outstand-ing Community Service. This award identifies students from YouthBuild programs across the country who have excelled in their service as AmeriCorps members during their time as YouthBuild students. Tahir contributed more than 1,000 hours of service to Philadelphia organizations, including hunger relief organization Philabundance.

“The panel felt that Tahir embodies a commitment to service, shows a willingness to take initiative and go above and beyond what is expected, and, through his actions, has a clear positive impact on his program and his community,” said Jill Graham, the AmeriCorps Portfolio Manager for YouthBuild USA.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Refurbishing Homes - and Our Livesby Ciera Russum, YouthBuild Class of 2012

In the past year, this house was com-pletely transformed. So was my life. When I first saw the house, there were holes in the floor and the wallpaper was peeling all the way down to the brick. It was literally an abandoned house. I had a lot of doubts about whether I could complete the program, and a lot of doubts about whether a group of inexperienced students could rebuild the home.

Thanks to our instructors, the Saint-Gobain Corporation Foundation and the building scientists at CertainTeed, we’ve learned new building skills that have opened my eyes to what I can do with my life. Sometimes this year I

would come home from working on the house and try out things I’d learned on my mom’s house – like fixing a hole in her ceiling! Before YouthBuild I’d never even picked up a piece of pipe in my life; now I will be attending Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in the fall to study plumbing.

While we’ve refurbished the house on Greene Street, we’ve also refurbished our lives at YouthBuild. I’ve learned important life skills like teamwork, time

management, and being able to trust oth-ers. I have learned how to take criticism, and how to be a leader who is responsible for the success of a project.

Working on the Greene Street Project has given me so much confidence. I had doubted that we could succeed in rebuild-ing this house, but we did it and it looks amazing. This makes me imagine all the things I used to doubt, that I actually can do. This house makes me feel like I can do just about anything.

On August 3rd, YouthBuild Students and Staff joined Germantown residents, city leaders and Saint-Gobain Corporation staff to celebrate the completion of YouthBuild Philly’s first LEED-targeted rehabilitiation project. Just 18 months earlier, the house (aptly located on Greene St.) was an abandoned structure and an eyesore lamented by neighbors. Today it is a LEED Platinum home owned and occupied by a first-time homebuyer.

With support from the Building Our Future Together partnership formed by YouthBuild USA and the Saint-Gobain Corporation, students renovated the house using green-building science and products made from

Green Home Completed on Greene Steet recycled materials. Hands-on training from building science experts prepared YouthBuild students for the “green-collar” jobs in today’s economy, and resulted in an energy-efficient, comfortable and affordable home.
