Editor Speaks

Man owes all he is and all he possess in life to memory - the abil-ity of the brain a record of past events , without good memory it would be difficult to lead an intelligent life . A keen memory is one of the foundations of success in life .The man who forgets to keep his appointments is often ignored by the people with a keen sense of time . The latter cannot afford to waste for him .The traders who forgets the price he quoted for the goods previously loses the goodwill and business of his customers . The office assistant who forgets the procedure and makes mistakes , becomes too expensive and is finally discharged from service .it is clear that a bad memory results in inefficiency ,failure and finan-cial troubles . The secreat of the good memory is attention ,and attention to a subject depends upon our interest in it .Man rarely forgets that which has made a deep impression on his mind .The main reasons why some people forget is mostly psychological.Theydo not have the strong desire to remember events or recollect things .What they need is the ‘will’ to imprint the abserveed data upon memory to produce them whenever needed .Yet another reason why we forget is that we do not have enough interest in the subject .We also forget due to our failure to connect one kind of memory with another , to unify the impressions gained , and to bring back to life what we learnt previously . Memory training should be continous all through life . Oth-erwise it may become ineffective .The various aids through which is fact is remembered , eg . eye-memory ,ear-memory should be made to help each other .The facts we remember and the way we recall them are influenced by our interests , attitudes , and emo-tional feelings . I Value your feedback .please give us your opinions about this first edition of magazine and tells us what features you would like to see from next time . Wishing everyone a ‘Happy Children’s Day’ !

you probably talk to friends way more than you talk to your parents . That’s natural. Even if you and your parents have a great relation-ship, you want to find your own path and make your own choices.Still, most of us want a parent’s help, advice, and support at times. But talking to the adults in your life can seem difficult or intimidating — especially when it comes to boyfriend-girlfriend subjects. Woman have a naturalinstinct of communicat-ing better and they often find it important to do so in special bonding cases. In that way mothers make a fair option to talk out your problems as her chance of feel ing connected to you. And the only and only key to tell your mother of an affair or of any thing for that matter is just to SPEAK UP...... Sounds easy but your lips gets sealed ,developing an-innate alien fear , your anxious eyes meet your mothers eyes and she asks, “what’s going on?”, and you just hope from within that she never figures out what is actually going on. The sole reason why you are reading this article shows how much you want your mo ments to share it with your mother. Because no wonder how much you get frightened of them , irritated by

their questions, or be critical about your new hairstyle you know that she is a hard core well wisher of your life .How you can leave them behind and not tell them that your partner search is over , you found your mate your L O V E (love).... “What ???”,” you crazy what are you a mud head teen who has no time to thinkabout except their looks and fun”.Sound so similar to most of us .We know what is best for us in our way. So we have to prove them wrong .HOW??? Well by doing some of the right things they always keep nagging about.

How to tell yourMom about your _____? ?

This battle needs prepara-tion and ‘VICTORY LOVES PREPARATION’. Talk About Every day Stuff — and Do It Every Day The more you do some thing, the easier it gets. ‘VICTORY LOVES PREPARATION’, Talk About Every day Stuff — and Do It Every Day The more you do some thing, the easier it gets. Talking to your mom about everyday stuff builds a bond that can something more serious.

Find something trivial to chat about each day. Talk about how your team did at the track meet. Share something one of your teachers said.Talk how other girls are mean and bitchy all the times. Even small talk about what’s for dinner can keep your rela-tionship strong and comfort-able .

Mention that cute thing the dog did. Talk about your siblings and try shifting to their the focus problems which would show your con-cern towards your family . Chatting with parents every day not only keeps an exiling relationship strong, it also can help a frayed rela tion. It’s never too late to start , If you feel your relationship with your parents is strained,

try easing into converstions. ship get stronger This way your habit of digging into your boyfriend/girlfriend’s life would lessen and would definitely be admired by them if you have got the right one . When parents feel connected to your daily life, they can be there for you if something really important comes up .

Perhaps you just really , re-ally want to tell your parents about your new boyfriendor girlfriend, but you don’t now how they’ll react, how it will feel to tell them, or how to find the words. Then start raising these difficult topics of discussion . in the whole world. But stick to your point Tell them how positive you have become in her company. Tell her how

Like , “what is my girl type?’ or ‘what are the qualities you look forward in any boy which makes him adorable’ . You may derive a lot about their final reaction by these answers . Know What You Want From the Conver-sation .It takes maturity to figure out what you want to get out of a conversation ( Most adults aren’t so good at this!).What you hope to achieve can vary .

Most often you’ll prob-ably want your mother to do one or more of these things : • simply listen and understand what you’re going through without offering , advice or comentary . • Gve permission or support for something offer you advice or help .• Guide you back on track if you’re in trouble — in a way that’s fair and without harsh criticism or put-downs Why think about this before you begin talking ? So you can say why you want to talk in a way

that communicates what you need. • “mother , I need your advice about some-thing . Can we talk?”. Its also impotant to know your mother type before you .

For example: • “Mom, I need to you about an important issue I’m having, but I need you to just listen , OK? Don’t give me advice — I just want you to know what’s going on in my life.” • “Mom, I need to you about an important issue I’m having, but I need you to just listen , OK? Don’t give me advice — I just want you to know what’s going on in my life.”

much you have learnt from him over these past few months ,Touch her inner natural woman with emotions flooding through your words ; just give time until things fall into their place .This is a hard nut to crack .The tiger mom or power mom, can never let anything get in the way when it comes to her childs future .

She knows everything behind the guys cruellest intentions( even if he dosent have it), fig-ured all hidden plans behind that innocent poker face (even if she never saw her that close enough) .You have got a tough fight out here. Just to have to be mature and sensible to handle thier spontaneous reac-tion.Dont ask them for any judgements because they can never be of your side .Dont argue and try to prove them wrong and Keep your point and just listen quietly to what she says , Stick to your point and just stand and frequently use words like ‘I UNDERSTAND but i was saying .....’ . Have your boyfriend show that he is a respectable young man and prove her wrong . Have him show that he cares for you. Maybe havehim ask her personally if he can date you I’d still tell your mom, and tell her that you would like to show her that you are respon sible, and that she can set the ground rules. Discuss the

logical reasons of why you should be able to date this guy, not just “but mooomm I re-ally really like him’ .Don’t tell her of where you met if it was in detention or somewhere like online or something. When you meet make it on a neutral ground nothing of sudden in nature. As if known for years but never talked kind. It makes it about him/her truthfully, or you might one day have it thrown back in your face otherwise .easier as it sounds ,try answering any questions Else be diplomat or dissolve the question any

how.If she gets angry don’t tell back avoid making things worse and pause the discus-sion for some days.plus if you would stay calm with her she will realize how mature you are . If she says no , accept it ( at least in front of her) eventu-ally she will come around to know wheather you are happy or not.Remember she’s only here to protect you .

DONT’S A parent would never be hap-py knowing … That he/she ever had an addiction., That he/she cheated on his sex .

How Effectively Communication make you successful ? Nearly 85% of what you accomplish in your career and in your personal life will be de-termined by how well you can get your mes-sage across, how capable you are of inspiring other people to take action on your ideas and recommendations. Once you’re able to master the skill of pow-erful communication, you’ll be living a life full of unlimited happiness. Imagine being able to express yourself openly and honestly to the degree in which others are influenced to do something because of what you have to say and HOW you say it. Even if you are limited in education, experience or intelli-gence, being able to communicate effectively with others is the most powerful, un-limiting success tool you could ever have.

The good news is that effective communication is a learned skill.

THE 3 ELEMENTS OF DIRECT COMMUNICATION

1. The Elements of WordsWords only account for 7 % of any message. For an effective communication to take place, of course, all three parts of the message must be congruent and consistent with each other. If there isn’t any congruency, the receiver will be confused and will have a tendency to accept the predominant form of communica-tion rather than the literal meaning or words.

2. Emphasis and Tone The emphasis and tone have the power to completely change the message that is

being communicated. Often, you will say something to a person and they may become offended. When you express that the words you used were intended to be inoffensive, the other person will tell you that it was your tone of voice that was the issue.

3.Body Language You can dramatically increase the effect of your communication by leaning toward the speaker or shifting your weight forward onto the balls of your feet. If you can face the per-son directly and give them direct eye contact, combined with fully-focused attention, you double the impact of what you’re saying. The most important part of good communi-cation is clarity. When you ask or say something clearly and then wait calmly and patiently for a complete answer, you will be amazed at how much more quickly the process of sending and receiving takes place. They ask questions to uncover the real needs and concerns of the other person. They ask questions to illumi-nate objections and problems that the other person might have with what they’re suggest-ing.When you are telling about anything that time you should be known that about the body movement and postures .When you seek first to understand, by ask-ing questions and listening carefully to the answers, and by presenting your viewpoint and your requests in such a way that they are consistent with the interests of the other person, you’ll become much more effective in getting the other person to act in a way that will be beneficial to both of you.

There are certain primal Indian forms that have an accident pedigrerr and form these hoary forms countless new forms have emerged over millennia of indian creativity .There is ,in this primal forms ,not only functionality but beauty and these are seminal in giving rise to multiple forms .Such is their strenth .

The Nine Ratnas The cosmic Waters ,mysterious and fall of secrets and treasures ,is thus the receptable of all that makes life precious and in par-ticular contains the pot of nectar that lies in its depths and which assures immortality .The episode of samundra manthan ,or the churning of the milky ocean ,sees the gods and the demons engage in battle for control of the nectar . when Indra and the devas went to Vishnu to ask for a boon .Vishnu instructed them to cast medicinalherbs into the milkyyocean and churn it .They were to take the mountainMandara became unsteady ,Vishnu took the form of a torroise and went under the ocean to support the mountain and himself Sat on its top. From the ocean thus churned by the gods and the demons ,arose the nine ratnas Kala sha ,Kalpavriksha ,Padma ,Apsara -

Kalasha ,Aichavaras ,Kaustabha ,Lakshmi and Dhanvantri .

Vocabulary Of Forms All of these are forms that have emerged from the mythic and formless occean and carry deep archetypal meanings and have remained foundational in the vocabulary of indian forms .The samudha is the meta-phor of the collective unconscious of the tradition , a storehouse of ancient memories ,deep and unspoken secrets of creation and archetypal forms .We return to these primal forms again and again ; they are multidi-mensional and polyvalent ,and from them have emerged from the mythic and farmless ocean and carry deep archetypal meanings and have remained foundations in the vocabulary of indian forms . The samudra is the metaphor of the tradition a store - house of ancient memories , deep and unspoken secrets of creation and archetypal for We return to these primal forms again ; they are multimensional and polyvalent ,a ,,and form them have emerged many degins and adornments ; these traditional forms have insipired the potter and the weaver ,the toy maker and calligra-pher the Jeweller and the stone carver ,

objects inspired by these forms are sold at fairs and festivals and adorn homes and haveils ,and they carry within them the meanings and meta-phors inherent in the primal myth of samundra manthan .Amrit ,or the nectar of im-morality ,which energes from the Kalasha is not to be un-derstood Just as the elixir of everlasting and immortal life but in it is the secret of perfect knowledge and it is the most precious of the ratans or the gems that were it was arise from the ocean when it was churned . This is primary matter from which creation springs .it is the repository of the mind .Therefore ,Whether it is for-tune as epitomised by Laksh-mi or valour . profound cos-mic occean is the metaphor .

Metaphor for Consciousness The ratnas further point that the vast and of the universal mind or consciousness .en-ergy represented by the horse and elephant , the fulfilment of wishes by the Kalpavriksa or the wish fulfiling tree ,and surubhi the divine Cow ,all these treasures reside in the Universal Consciousness .It is form here that mankind has to repossess them ,and it is on this ocean of universal consciousness that Vishnu will rest at the dissoultion of creation and the start of an-other .The Cosmic waters ,mysteri-ous and full of secrets and treasures ,is thus the recepta-cle of all that makes life pre-cious and in particular con-tains the pot of nectar that

lies in its depths and which assures immortality . The churning of the ocean was a metaphorical act. The good (gods) and the bad( de-mons ) are the mental tenden-cies, which together give rise to thoughts leading eventually to action. Thoughts can be vicious ,like poison, which also came out during churning, or sublime, like the nectar. Wise and discriminating use of intellect can give us material wealth and pleasure in the mundane matters as well as fulfil our wishes of divine benediction, which is lasting and never gets exhausted. Now the time has come, to churn living thoughts of the Wisdom of God, where you shall get the Light of God , dissolving the miseries of life and attaining .

THE DANGERS OF TEEN ALCOHOL ABUSE Abhishek prakash my child-hood friend (name changed ) was 14 years old when he had his first sip of alcohol .He had just discovered that his parents were separating and that soon his family would not be the same anymore .His parents did not realize that he had taken to drinking on a regular basis .

After his father moved out ,Ab-hishek stayed with his mother ,a busy businesswoman .He did show signs of anger and violence occasionally ,but his mother did not take his amiss ,she attributed this to her sepa-ration from her hushband and hoped that abhishek would get used to the idea .

Abhishek gradually became violent and started beating her .She recognized belatedly, she smell of alcohol in his breath .Abhishek ,she enlisted her hushband’s support and to-gether they took abhishek to de-addiction centre .The par-ents moved in together to foter their son’s recover and it really helped ! it tok abhishek two whole years to recover but he

finally gave up the habit of drinking .

WHAT IS ALCO-HOL ABUSE ? Alcohol abusers are those who drink despite recurrent so-cial ,interpersonal ,and legal problems .The consumption of alcohol leads to a ‘ harmful use ‘ causing physical or mental demage to the drinker .Repeat-ed abuse or ‘harmful use ‘ can lead to alcoholism .

Alcoholism is charac-terized by : * The inability to control drinking once it has begun . * A physical dependence manifested by withdrawal symptoms when the indiviual stops using alcohol .

* Increased tolerance ; or the need to use mare and more alcohol to achieve the same effects . * A variety of medical ,social and /or legal problems aris-

ing from alcohol use .AL-COHOL AND THE TEEN BRAIN While many people undestand that alcohol can affect the liver ,few people know the dangers that it can prose to the teen brain continoues to develop during the early 20s and alco-hol abuse arrests the develop-ment .”The adolescent brain is still developing and complete brain maturity occurs only by age 25 . Alcohol destroys the brain cells MRI scans of young regular drinkers

Page 17: youth's wings

shows distinct changes .A study conducted by Susan F .Tapert ,Ph. D,an associate professor in the department of psychiatry at the university of california ,San Diego and director of the subst-nce Abuse Mental illness Pro-gramme ,VA San Diego Health-care System , reveals Recent evidence sug-gests that heavy drinking during adolescene and young adult-hood is associated with poorer neuro-cognite functioning dur-ing the young adult years ,with particular impairment of atten-tion and visualspatial skills ,”he brain undergoes changes till the age of 25 years . Brain imaging studies have demonstrated that heavy alco-hol consumption during ado-lescene and young adulthood can lead to subtle but significant bnormalities in brain structure and function .During the criti-cal period of adolescene ,the ex-ecutive control portion of the brian the prefrontal lobes -is still developing .Ths region of the brain is crictical to the deci-sion making process ,assessing risks and managing immediate gratification versus long-term

goals .Becuse of the undevel-oped prefrontal lobes ,teens tend to engage in risky behav-iours including consumption of alcohol . Drinking alcohol in turm affects the development of these lobes ,making this is vi-cious cycle .Drinking also affects the growth of the hippocampus ,the part of the brain responsible for learning and memory .Hence .teens who drink not only have a short-term memory loss ,but their atudies also affected .When teens drink heavily ,ow-ing to the reduced brain re-sponse ,they may not exibit the typical physical traits of drunk-ness - like swaying while walk-ing, or slurring of speech .

CAUSES OF ALCOHOLISM

LOW SELF -WORTH : Teenagers are at elevated risk for alcohol addiction because they are more self - conscious that adults and are eager to please their peers ,’ Among the leading reasons for teen drinking includes the belief that alcohol will make them feel better .

STRESS : Increasing com-petition from the world out-side ,parental expectations and the constant need for acceptance by the peer group combine to cause unbearable stress ,Teen takes to drinking as a coping mechanism .

HEREDITY : A de-ad-diction unit of the wisdom Medical research foundation Trust ,35% of the teen alco-hol cases are heredity .The father or the grandfather may have been a habitual drinker .

EASY AVAILABILITY : Through the legal age for drinking varies across in-dia from 18 -25 years ,bars seldom question young-sters walking in .Youngsters also have access to liquor at parties .some parents serve alcohol to their children un-der supervision ,rather than having them experiment elsewhere with their peers .

THE DANGERS OF TEEN ALCOHOL ABUSE

Page 18: youth's wings

18 Youth’s Wings /November 2012

WARNING SIGNS OF A DRINKING PROBLEM * Mood changes : irritability ,temper and defensiveness .

• School problems; poor at-tendance ,low grades ,discipli-nary action.

• Rebellion.

• New friendships along with a reluctance to introduce their friends to you .

• A ‘nothing matters’ attitude revealing a sloppy appearance, a lack of involvement in for-mer interests, and low energy/lethargy .

• Alcohol found in the child’s room or schoolbag or the smell of alcohol in his breath. • Physical or mental problems; memory lapses ,poor concen-tration ,bloodshot eyes ,lack of coordination ,or slurred speech

EFFECTS OF AL-COHOL ABuse

As their brain shrinks, poor judgment can lead to accidents that cause injury to them and others .one in five hospital ad-missions has a direct relationship to alcohol consumption . one in five traumatic brain injuries seen in hospital emergency rooms are related to alcohol .Many teens also take to violence. “By this time they have lost the ability to think or the listen. They start abusing people verbally and physically .Eventually ,they de-velop personality disorders and sometimes depression .they also put their careers at risk .“Adolescents who drink are also more likely to engage in risky sexual activities ,casual ,unpro-tected sexual relationships with strangers are a possibility .and unwanted pregnancies and HIV infections may occur .other health problem include stomach ulcers ,liver problems .

SOLUTIONS “There are no proper solutions to teenage drinking .medical treat-ment and counseling are the only solutions .‘By simply talking to the teenager about the use of alcohol and the effects of teenage drinking ,par-ents can rsduce the risk of their child drinking .

Children are more likely to com-municate with their parents when they receive positive verbal and non- verbal cues that show that their parents are listening .

A strong value system can give children the courage to make decisions based on facts ,rather than give in to pressure from friends .Hobbies ,school events ,and other activities may prevent children from expermenting with alcohol ,tobacco ,or other drugs out of boredom .

Before the invention of steam engine , The most common source of energy availble to man was muscular energy . By experience , man gained a general idea about the rate at which an average horse can work .James Watt, the grandson of a teacher of mathemat-ics, and the son of a shipwright merchant of Greenock, was born in 1736. On the advice of a Glasgow Professor, he was sent to London in 1755 to be apprenticed to a mathematcal instrument maker. However, on arriving in London he discov-ered that the seven years’ apprenticeship rule of the gild was largely insisted upon, and it was only with difficulty that he could find any one who would take him for so short a time as a year If the steam was condensed in a separate ves-sel from the cylinder, it would be quite pos-sible to keep the condensing vessel cool and the cylinder hot at the same time. The next morning Watt built a prototype and found that it worked. He added other improvements and built his now famous improved steam engine. This is the reason why james Watt ,the inven tor of the steam engine , compared his egines with horses and sold each engine as being

equivalent to so many number of horses . He was thus able to express the power of his engines in simple terms .In this way ‘ horse power’ ( h. p) came to be used as the unit of power . How did Watt find ou the rate of the power of a horse ? He performed an experiment in which a horse was made to raise a known weight of coal from a coal -pit .The verti-cal distance through which the weight was moved in one minute was carefully noted . The amount of work done by the horse in unit time was regarded as the average rate of working of a horse ,or one ‘ horse power’ ( h. p .).Now a days another unit called ‘ watt’ is commonly used by scientists and engineers as a unit of power . One horse power is 746 watts .By the ways ,it may be interesting to note that the rate at which a man can work is certainly Limited : about 80 watts ( 0.11 h.p.) over log periods with peaks of 500 watts ( 0.67 h. p. ) for short periods . James Watt himself had no money to spend on experi-ments, and no capital with which to start manufacturing steam engines, should his experiments prove successful .

What we like ...... * Dyanamic content : Much like smart-phones and tablets ,Windows 8 will have your laptop or desktop’s screen feeding you all sorts of information notifications current time ,number of unread emails ,weather details befor you even unlock it . Windows 8 also work best when it is connected to the web .This means ,you can hook it up with your Live ID and sync all your content like office files or family photographs with SkyDrive in real time .

* Universal search :When you need to ac-cess a program or a file .you can just start typing its name at the Start Screen . You will get the content or app you are lokking for even before you have fin-ished typing .Overall ,its Search feature is powerful and works very well .

* App support for your PC : We like that you can run apps on your PC ,Just like you would on a tablet .Installing or Uninstalling apps through the Windows Store is just a matter of one click .Overall Modern UI apps are clutter free and easy to handle . The user interface is beautiful ,and singing up with your Live ID means that you can access all your apps across devices .

What We don’t like * No Start button : We miss ‘Start’ .it is our go-to button to begin any task on our PC or even ac-cess any program. The absenceof this all-important

button might puzzle and even frustrate userswho have grown accustorned to its unobtrusive exitenceat the bottom left corner of their screens .

* Can be confusing : In Windows 8 ,gestures play a big role .This means there is no ‘X’ at the top right corner to close an app .in the Modern UI ,y.On touchscreen tablets ,gestures feel natural .On your desktop or notebook ,they don’t .This means there is no ‘X’ at the top right corner to close an app .in the Modern UI .you have to navigate to the top of the app with a mouse ,wait for a hand -cursor to appear and then drag to the bottomto close it .On touchscreen tablets ,gestures feel natural .On your desktop or notebook ,they don’t This means there is no ‘X’ at the top right corner to close an app .in the Modern UI ,you have to navigate to the top of the app with a mouse ,wait for a hand -cursor to appear and then drag to the bottomto close it .On touchscreen tablets ,gestures feel natural .On your desktop or notebook ,they don’t .

*Modern hidden file system : This is something that is like-ly to trouble power users .When work ing with Modern UI apps ,users can be just two apps at a time .Also ,its file system is largely hidden or with which program you want to open it .It all happens automatically .Similarly ,Once you have saved a file in this way .you cannot look for it through your folders .In-stead ,you will have to seek it using the universal search feature ,or find it through the program that was used to open it .

These teenagers tend to get adamant, if they are not bought the product. The youth often tend to misin-terpret the messages conveyed in commercials. They overlook the positive side and concen

trate more on the negatives. The types ofyouth today are exposed to all advertisements on various media like the television, print media and internet as well. In fact, every-one is bombarded by advertise-ments everywhere now a days. The teens in general are more susceptible and get easily influ-enced by advertisements . The youth, they are innocent and not realize that it is a business and their main aim is to

sell. Teens take everythingat facevalue and believe with out a not so mature to know the business tactics . When a marketer advertises a product on television, they do doubt the messages in the advertise-ments. The flashy advertisements broadcast in television generate impulse shopping among the youth. -ries, food and luxurious of the youngsters are altered by the advertisements , to a great ex-tent. Another way in which the youngsters get attracted to the goods are the new rising mall culture . These huge massive buildings highly technically built with all the latest facili-ties attract a lot of people for the sake of entertainment . But even here the focus is on the youth. The shops opened here are youth welcoming. Many brand-ed shops like the Lifestyle, Weekender and so on… then coffee bars, KFC etc. Video games attract the youth in a big way. It’s a fashion, a trend to visit such malls and purchase things. It’s the so called “class”

of shopping. It’s the so called “class” of shopping. Shops there attract you in such a way that you make an urge for things, like” oh! I wanted this for ages!!!” and then go out of the shop with a big bag and a big smile as if you have achieved something great. These adver-tisements can also get you to a psychic level of shopaholism technically known as onioma-nia. Here you go crazy over things that you develop an unwanted want edness in you that tend you to shop and shop and shop. The shopaholism may eventu-ally lead to “shoplifting’,atleast in few cases. Now in this era of easy availability of commodi-ties, the availability of money

has also been made easy through a system of any time money(ATM).As there is heavy competition in the market, the banks in their quest to expand their cus-tomer base go on issuing cards without really looking into the credit worthiness of the cus-tomer. This results in a situ-ation where every individual has multiple credit cards in his wallet. This develops a feeling among the youngsters that they can withdraw money anytime as they own a credit card. But the whole problem arises when the time comes to settle the payments for the purchases made. They run out of money as they spent all they had in purchasing.
