MILLER HOFFMAN: Counselor/Advocate Miller is an ordained minister with Metropolitan Community Churches. His master’s thesis was deposited in the Burke Library at Union Theological Seminary in 2004 and earned him the Roswell Dwight Hitchcock Prize in Church History. He has worked for LGBT civil rights with Lambda Legal Defense; for anti-violence justice and meditative practice at the Brooklyn-based Center for Anti-Violence Education, one of the first all-women organizations to include trans women and, later, all trans-identified people; as a counselor and advocate for domestic violence and rape survivors with organizations in New York and Pennsylvania, including state-wide violence prevention efforts; as a mentor to local queer and trans youth in NY and PA; and as the pastor of MCC congregations in Binghamton, NY, and currently Open Door MCC in Boyds, MD. Mind-body-spirit connections to social justice and the connectedness of all forms of physical, emotional, and spiritual violence deeply influence his theology and ministry. Miller is a contributor to The Huffington Post, and his writing explores the places where personal action meets and impacts social change.

DANA HIPPENSTEEL: Prevention Education Coordinator Mrs. Hippensteel is our new Sexual Assault/Rape Crisis Prevention Education Coordinator and Counselor/Advocate. She has her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Shippensburg University and is currently in her last semester of graduate school for her Master’s in Social Work from Shippensburg University. She previously worked at the Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute in their child and adolescent partial hospitalization program as a Behavioral Health Specialist where she developed a passion for educating and empowering youth. She is currently doing prevention programs in Cumberland County schools and will provide important lessons on topics such as healthy body image, healthy dating and relationships, and bullying for the remainder of the school year.

JULIA FAGNILLI: Volunteer Coordinator Julia Fagnilli comes to us from Wilmington, Delaware where she worked for ContactLifeline’s Crisis Helpline and Sexual Assault Specialist services. She initially started there as the Volunteer Coordinator, then as the Crisis Services Training Coordinator, before eventually taking on the statewide role as the Sexual Assault Specialist Coordinator. Julia spent time as Chair of the Training Subcommittee for the Sexual Assault Network of Delaware and the Youth Subcommittee for the Delaware Suicide Prevention Coalition, and was also the Vice President of Programs for the State Training Advisory Network of Delaware. She studied Psychology at Wilmington University and is looking forward to starting a program for her Master’s Degree in Social Work. When not working, Julia enjoys reading, gardening, hiking with her dog, cooking delicious meals, and spending time with her family and close friends.

TRISHA GRACE: Director of Fund Development Trisha Grace joined the YWCA Carlisle team in September as Director of Fund Development. She came to us from Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania where she was a Development Coordinator responsible for managing over 20 United Way partners across the council’s 30-county area. Prior, Trisha worked as a staff writer for the Shippensburg News-Chronicle and the Newville Valley-Times Star and as museum director at the Shippensburg Historical Society. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from Bloomsburg University and Master’s Degree from Shippensburg University. Passionate about community engagement, Trisha’s interest in fundraising began at the volunteer level in the Shippensburg area. She was grant committee chair at Shippensburg Arts Programming and Education and later served as President of the organization. She also crafted funding proposals and organized special events to benefit the Shippensburg Garden Club, Shippensburg Historical Society, March to Destiny Civil War Reenactment and Living History Event, and Shippensburg Public Library. A proud daughter, sister, and momma to her fur-baby, Lucy, Trisha is also an avid reader who loves to hike, garden, and cook.

LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH

Events over this past year have thrown into sharp relief the racial divisions, prejudices and inequalities that

continue to plague our society. Many of us are stunned, feeling overwhelmed with trying to find a way forward,

creating a world where every person truly has value as a member of the human family.

There is an old song that says, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” The end of racial

discrimination must begin within ourselves and then move out into the world around us. We must be willing to

question our own thoughts, backgrounds, and experiences in order to move beyond tolerance of those who are

different from ourselves. We must engage in ongoing self-assessment and awareness of how power differences affect

our ability to be genuinely helpful. Committing to this process will bring about change, and that change will afford us

the ability to denounce violence and injustice and stand in solidarity with marginalized and oppressed groups of

people.

Peace is not just a feeling. It is also an action that must be promoted and acted upon if we ever expect to live

in a society that offers peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

KIDS+PETS=WARM YOUR HEART MOMENTS

Marie Helwig-Larson, a Dickinson College psychology professor, brings her certified therapy dog Mia into Homework Club and the

students read to Mia. Homework Club students participate in the Tail Waggin’ Tutors reading program offered through Therapy Dogs

International, Inc. The main objective of this program is to provide a relaxed and “dog-friendly” atmosphere, which allows students to

practice the skill of reading. By sitting down next to a dog and reading to the dog, all threats of being judged are put aside. The child

relaxes, pats the attentive dog, and focuses on the reading. Reading improves because the child is practicing the skill of reading,

building self-esteem, and associating reading with something pleasant. All dogs in this program are trained and must pass a

temperament evaluation for suitability to become a Therapy Dog.
