RAKU is a traditional form of Japanese pottery used in tea ceremonies.
What makes Raku unique is the range of designs that can be created
by simply altering certain variables e.g. glazes, wax resist, temperature,
slips and most importantly timing, which ultimately determine the
outcome firing a piece of clay. The fired raku is removed from the hot
kiln and is allowed to cool in the open air. These „chawan“ (tea bowls)
are fairly porous vessels, which result from low firing temperatures.
Beside its individuality of each piece, as it‘s being hand-shaped rather
than thrown, every course of an artwork can hardly be influenced
during the firing and cooling process. Every piece consists a surprise
effect when washing and polishing it.
I am fond of its uniqueness.
In some works I incoprate my very own crumpled style.

Shalini Ganendra Residency Paper Raku Light Installation - 2016
The traditional and modern form of raku firing inspired me to elevate my
ideas from making „chawan“ to realise my thoughts into a joint project.
I have been producing my own paper for several years now. Paper
making is amazing. Water and fibre from various materials would be
sufficient enough to make sheets. Since I am fond of uniqueness, I
combine raku and paper into a light installation.
I incoprate my very own crumpled style in both medium.
It‘s more of an intergrative production style.
Thanx to my mentor Dagmar Wichmann, a great team Ronny Friedrich
and Christian Wesche.
