Dear Community,

As the 2013-2014 school year approaches, I want you to know how honored I am to have the privilege to serve this community as superintendent of schools. We are beginning the second decade of the Zachary Community School District, and few could have imagined the successes we have accomplished together over these last 10 years. Our district has grown, our students have excelled, and our educators have been recognized nationally. Throughout this time, the support our parents and community show the schools have remained a key factor in our continued success.

Over the past 10 years we have also dramatically improved our school facilities. Last year, we opened Rollins Place Elementary and the new Visual and Performing Arts Center at Zachary High School. Construction will continue this year on the Zachary Elementary expansion, Zachary Career and Technical Center at Port Hudson expansion and an expansion at Copper Mill Elementary. We continue to strive to provide our students with first-rate learning spaces.

In the coming year, we will once again embrace new challenges together. Zachary’s teachers have shown an exceptional level commitment to the students of this district, working hard on new curriculum this summer to address the Common Core Curriculum Standards. The increased level of rigor provided by the standards will help better prepare our students for college and their futures. Our focus is to meet the needs of every student of this district every day. That is my commitment to you. I look forward to a successful school year.

Sincerely,

Scott DevillierSuperintendent

Zachary Based Modern Hospice Has Begun Serving Zachary, Surrounding AreasChampion Management, LLC,

a provider of healthcare services across the Southern United States, has announced it has begun pro-viding Hospice services across the Zachary area and throughout its South Louisiana service area this past July 1, 2013. John Stagg, Presi-dent/CEO for Champion Manage-ment along with Hospice partner Jody Boyd made the announcement for the newly purchased Hospice. The hospice will be called Mod-ern Hospice with headquarters in Hammond, Louisiana. The addition of the Hospice service will com-pliment Champion’s home health services already in existence in the same service area. Stagg and Boyd also announced that Zachary native

Heather Prejean has been named as marketing representative for Modern Hospice.

Stagg reports that Modern Hos-pice grew out of a long time vision that he and Jody Boyd had for help-ing local residents in their time of need. Witnessing the great demands that caring for loved ones places upon caregivers and family mem-bers, the idea for creating a highly sensitive and caring Hospice service was born. “We experienced first hand the need for a Hospice service that is highly sensitive to both the patient and the caregiver. The program that my partner Jody and I developed has at its foundation, exemplary care and empathy for all we will serve,” Stagg comments. He adds that the owner- ship and marketing team’s close per-

sonal connection to the Zachary area makes Modern Hospice particularly aware of the local needs and con-cerns of Zachary area residents.

Modern Hospice will offer a range of in-home hospice services to the people of the Zachary area using a multidisciplinary team approach that includes the services of nurses, doc-tors, social workers and clergy in the provision of care. Services will be individually tailored to the specific needs of the patient and their family situation and will include pain man-agement, physical, occupational and speech therapy, assistance with med-ical supplies and equipment, dietary

counseling, continuous home care during crisis times, and bereavement services. Respite care workers will also be provided as needed for the relief of primary caregivers.

Modern Home Health and Hos-pice will have offices at 42078 Vet-erans Avenue, Suite B in Hammond beginning July 1, 2013. The office can be reached at 1-877-429-0210. The Modern Home Health and Hos-pice website is www.modernhos-pice.net. Modern Home Health and Hospice are part of the Champion Management family of healthcare programs located throughout the Southern United States with head-quarters in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Local Soccer Clubs Unite for the Growth of SoccerBaton Rouge Soccer Club partners with Zachary Area Soccer Association

A new partnership between the Baton Rouge Soccer Club (BRSC) and Zachary Area Soccer Associa-tion (ZASA) will combine the re-sources of both clubs for the contin-ued growth of soccer.

Starting in the fall of 2013, all ZASA players from ages nine and above will register with BRSC. The younger age group players will con-tinue to register with ZASA for an-other year. This process will give older ZASA players the opportunity to choose a variety of program op-tions provided by BRSC including Recreational, Academy, and Com-

petitive levels of play. “The primary mission of Baton

Rouge Soccer is to provide a quality soccer experience to all members by offering players the option to play at the level most appropriate for their skill and commitment levels,” said Gary Buete, BRSC Executive Di-rector. “We are super excited to be able to provide the same opportuni-ties to those who live in the Zachary community!”

Also in the first year of the part-nership, the two organizations will combine each other’s resources to continue the growth of soccer in the

Zachary area. Baton Rouge Soccer will help provide coaching educa-tion, infrastructure, player develop-ment, additional program options and marketing support to ZASA.

“ZASA has done a tremendous job growing and promoting soccer in their community, and with the ad-dition of our professional staff and experience, we know we can help further develop and enhance the programming offered by their orga-nization,” said Buete.

By the fall of 2014, all ZASA players will register with BRSC. These younger teams will still play

their matches at the Flanacher Road Complex, and will be the start of Ba-ton Rouge Soccer Club – Zachary Campus.

“ZASA is very excited about our partnership with BRSC, said Brian Dubee,” ZASA Vice-President of Operations. “Over the past 11 years we have seen the game of soccer grow in our community and want to be able to take it to the next lev-el. This partnership will allow our soccer community to be able to get to that next level and beyond. We know it is a win-win for both clubs and communities.”

Lane Foundation Announces Capital CampaignThe Lane Regional Medical Cen-

ter Foundation has announced its goal to raise $500,000 - $1 million for its Cancer Services capital cam-paign.

More than $300,000 already has been donated or pledged to support Lane Foundation’s project, a $4.5 million Radiation Oncology Center. Lane Regional has partnered with Baton Rouge General and radiation oncologists William Russell, MD and Andrew Lauve, MD to open the state-of-the-art Center on Lane’s campus in January 2014.

Lane’s commitment to the project is $1 million which will go towards purchasing a new Linear Accelera-tor and providing cancer treatment services. The Linear Accelerator uses external beam radiation to treat all parts and organs of the body by

delivering high-energy x-rays to the patient’s tumor, pinpointed to de-stroy the cancer cells while sparing

surrounding normal tissue. The campaign, guided by a new-

ly formed Development Board of volunteers and local leaders, has re-ceived tremendous community sup-port with more than 300 individuals, businesses and organizations mak-ing donations and pledges in the first few months.

“People throughout the region are contributing to the campaign because they see the impact the Ra-diation Oncology Center will have on the community,” says LaneRMC Foundation Director Theresa Pay-ment. “Those battling cancer will no longer have to travel elsewhere to receive life-saving treatment and being able to stay close to home will make things much easier for them and their loved ones.”

Internal support for the proj-

ect has been especially impressive with more than $150,000 donated or pledged by Lane employees and auxiliary members.

“We are pleased to see such a generous outpouring of support coming from our staff members and volunteers, as well as from so many individuals, families and business-es.” said Randy Olson, Lane CEO. “This is a long-term investment the communities we serve will benefit from for generations to come.”

For additional information about the Radiation Oncology Center, or to make a donation to the LaneRMC Foundation’s Cancer Services cam-paign, please contact Theresa Pay-ment at (225)658-6699, [email protected] or visit LaneRMC-Foundation.org

Lane Behavioral Health Celebrates 2nd Year in ZacharyThis month, Lane Behavioral

Health Services celebrates their 2nd anniversary of providing behavioral health services to our region.

Lane Behavioral Health Services offers an Intensive Outpatient Pro-gram designed to help individuals through times of stress, fear, de-pression, anxiety, and behavioral or emotional crises.

More than just “a helping hand,” this active treatment program teach-es powerful and practical ways to respond to any type of traumatic life event, especially major crisis due to the loss of a job, health, relation-ship, or family member. It is an ac-

tive treatment program that teaches practical ways to take charge and de-velop the long-term skills needed for personal success.

In addition to its regular outpatient treatment program, Lane Behavioral Health Services also offers an outpa-tient Partial Hospitalization Program for adults experiencing acute mental health crisis. The Partial Hospital-ization Program may be appropriate for those making the transition from inpatient to outpatient. The Partial Hospitalization Program provides a more intensive level of care and may reduce the risk of inpatient hospital-ization.
