The class will introduce students to a variety of theatrical genres and techniques. Differentiated learning will be utilized to accommodate the needs of the students. Throughout the year, formal and informal assessments will be implemented to gauge achievement and as an evaluation tool. I stress the value of open communication between student, teacher, parents, and administration. Goals: Upon completion of the drama course, students should be able to: Understand the basic concepts of drama. Apply basic drama concepts to the activities involved in theatrical productions. Participate in play cuttings and one-act play presentations while developing individual character interpretations. Participate in group meetings in which another person's comments or opinions are solicited. Clarify, illustrate, or expand on a response when asked to do so. Respond in a variety of ways to what is read, written, heard, or viewed. Academic Integrity: The course policy regarding Academic Integrity (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) is governed by the Zama American Middle School Student Handbook. Classroom Management: In my classroom, students are expected to be prepared, polite, and positive. Active participation is required to ensure success. For the most part, this will be a performance based curriculum, the rest will be written tasks in preparation for the performance. Grading Scale: Zama American Middle School uses the standard DoDEA grading scale. For more information, refer to the Zama Middle School student handbook.

Homework/Late-work Policy: Homework is assigned to ensure understanding of the concepts presented during class through practice and/or investigation. Students will be told the due dates for assignments. Late work will be accepted only until the next time class is scheduled to meet, but with a 5 percent deduction in the 1st quarter and a 10 percent deduction in the 2nd quarter. Assignments will not be accepted after that time unless requested by a sponsor. Then the work will be accepted earning partial credit. Materials Required: Textbooks, literary novels, plays, speeches, and song lyrics will be provided to all students. It will be the responsibility of the student to maintain the condition of the hard copy materials given to them. Basic school supplies (i.e. pencils, notebooks, paper) will be needed. If there are other materials required, students will be duly notified on an as needed basis. For example, costumes, cue cards, markers, etc. may be needed for a project.

Video Production Text: Handouts, Selected Movies and Videos Baldemor, Oscar Room 119 Tel. # DSN-263 4040 E-mail: [email protected] Planning Periods: A2/B2 Philosophy: The goal of this course is to gain an appreciation for video media. Students will be introduced to and explore the fundamentals of video production. It will be a product/project-based curriculum, but research, reading, writing, and turning in assignments will be needed to ensure success. Goals: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: Understand the Pathway of audio, video technology, film. Understand the Cluster of operations, concepts and innovations. Analyze various careers in audio and video technology and film. Define terminology associated with audio and video technology and film. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in pre-production, production, and post post-production. 30% SCREENING- The final video product/project shown on screen 25% POST PRODUCTION- The stages of editing: sound, effects, titles, etc. Afterwards, critique will be given as a guideline to improve and correct before screening. 25% PRODUCTION- The filming of the video project/product. 20% SCRIPT- All written assignments, graphics, storyboards, and notes.

Description / Philosophy: The English language arts course provides a content that engages the student in literacy skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening while integrating computer and research skills that prepare a student for higher levels of language arts. The skills learned in this course will apply to the student’s life as a learner as well as a future career. Investigating the language arts consists of understanding the human world of ideas through language use and stories. We all have a story to tell and students will learn how to express it well.

Goals: The content focus for 7th grade will include an exploration of literary and non-fiction works, proper language use and writing.

• Word recognition, fluency, and vocabulary development. • Comprehension and analysis of nonfiction and informational text. • Comprehension and analysis of literary text. • Writing processes and features. • Different types of writing and their characteristics. • English language conventions. • Listening and speaking skills, strategies, and applications.

Academic Integrity: Academic integrity is a guiding principle which encourages students to learn and grow through discipline, time management, and proper crediting for the use of another’s work. To encourage this principle, plagiarism will not be tolerated in any form and will result in a zero score and parental notification. Plagiarism is defined according to the Merriam Webster dictionary as: “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own, to use (another's production) without crediting the source, to commit literary theft, to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.”

All of the following are considered plagiarism:

•turning in someone else's work as your own

•copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit

•failing to put a quotation in quotation marks

•giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation

•changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit

•copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not

Homework will be posted on Schoology as well as written in student’s planners by the students. Tests, Papers, Quizzes, and Projects will be turned into Schoology in the appropriate folder for that assignment unless stated otherwise. Late-work Policy: No late work (including assigned quizzes) will be accepted one week after the due date. Students who submit work late but prior to the deadline may be assigned a late penalty of one letter grade (10%). Any work submitted before the deadline that meets minimum criteria for mastery will earn at least a minimum passing grade. Any work submitted after the deadline and that satisfies the minimum requirements, will receive 50% of the total points. There will be no late work accepted after the summative assessment (major test) for that unit.

Description / Philosophy: Major Concepts/Content: Integrated Science II is designed to provide students with an integrated approach to three traditional science disciplines (life science, physical science, earth/space science), in addition to science as inquiry, science & technology, science & social perspectives, and the history & nature of science. The course integrates the traditional disciplines using the unifying concepts and processes of systems, order & organization, evidence, models & explanation, change, consistency & equilibrium, and form & function.

Scientific inquiry and understanding about inquiry are emphasized through practical implications and meaningful applications. Topics students study include water, ecology, geology, plant and animal life, properties of matter, populations, and the solar system.

Major Instructional Activities: Based on the philosophy that scientific knowledge is best acquired through inquiry, the course uses a variety of techniques to introduce, stimulate, explore, and reinforce major scientific concepts, theories, principles, and skills.

Instructional activities are staged in appropriate settings. They include laboratories, classrooms, forms of technology, and field studies. Teaching strategies include investigations, demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on/minds-on experiences.

Major Evaluation Techniques: All aspects (e.g., ability to inquire, scientific understanding of the natural world, and understanding of the nature and utility of science) of progress in science are measured using multiple methods such as individual and group performances, projects, interviews, reports, student-generated works, and/or conventional testing.

Description / Philosophy: Knowing, and being able to demonstrate, how to solve a math problem is more important than the final answer. Mastery of the material is of paramount importance to the amount of time spent getting there.

Goals: Acceleration is intended for the qualifying student who desires and is capable of a more rigorous mathematics curriculum. This accelerated 7th grade course integrates all of the 7th grade standards and approximately half of 8th grade standards throughout the year. Students taking this course would be expected to take the accelerated course for 8th grade which integrates half of the 8th grade standards and all of the Algebra I standards the following year. Student enrolling in this class must meet three of the following criteria:

• At least 90th percentile on standardized assessment (Terra Nova)

• At least an A grade (overall) in 6th grade math

• A master score of at least 80 on the DoDEA placement test

Homework: Homework will primarily consist of previewing the lesson, taking notes prior to coming to class, and online assignments using ASSISTments. The bulk of math instruction and practice will occur in the classroom. Students are expected to spend at least 30 minutes doing math pre-work or homework every day. Homework: Homework will primarily consist of previewing the lesson, taking notes prior to coming to class, and online assignments using ASSISTments. The bulk of math instruction and practice will occur in the classroom. Students are expected to spend at least 15 minutes doing math pre-work or homework every day. Late-work Policy: The 7th grade team policy is a 10% deduction in possible points for every day an assignment is not turned in. In the event of an excused absence, the student has the same number of days to make-up missed assignments as days absent. It is the students’ responsibility to obtain missed assignments.

Materials Required: Pencils, eraser, paper and a notebook or composition book for note-taking and 3-ring binder.

Assessment: Students will be assessed by a portfolio, self-evaluation check list, and formative assessment. Rubric will be used to help students work on a project and a presentation will be assessed by performance assessment.

Homework: No homework will be assigned for the cultural sessions. Homework for Hiragana and Katakana is due and will be checked at the beginning of each class period. Homework is one of the measurements for students to know what they are doing well and where they should focus on to overcome their weakness in study. Trying to do homework by oneself is more important than having it done by copying someone else’s answers. Any questions about homework are welcome during Seminar and/or after school. Hiragana, Katakana, vocabulary, and phrases should be reviewed DAILY for at least 15 minutes, even when there is no ‘formally assigned’ homework. Students can also check the assignments on GradeSpeed.

Late-Work Policy: Assignments not turned in at the time due will be penalized 10 grade-percentage points per school day until they have reached the minimum grade. Because classwork and homework are designed to increase a student’s understanding of the material as they practice, no late work will be accepted past the summative assessment on that material.

Excused Absences Work / Make-Up Work Policy: All missed work due to excused absences will be given a grade of ZERO until the work has been turned in and corrected. Do NOT wait and come to the next class unprepared. Try to avoid falling behind upon return. It is student’s responsibility to find out what work they have to make up or work on. It is important that each student assumes the responsibility of requesting make-up work from each teacher on the FIRST DAY of their return to school. Students can get assistance with make-up work during Seminar, after school, or during class individual work time. Students will be allowed to turn in make-up work without penalty within the time frame equal to the number of days absent. Assignments submitted after the due-date because a student failed to request the work in a timely fashion will be considered late and graded under the Late Work Policy. Even though a student was not present for instruction on a particular topic does not mean the student cannot attempt an assignment or prepare for the next class. At the very least, the student should be prepared to ask questions at the next class meeting to help them catch up. While teachers may make exceptions to due dates based on the complexity of the task and need for direct instruction, students who miss school should assume that they are responsible for any material at the next class meeting.

Re-Submitting Work Policy: The goal of instruction is for the student to display mastery of the curriculum. Extra-Credit work to help raise a low grade will NOT be given. However, teachers will work individually with students on a case-by-case basis to support a student’s effort to re-submit work or attempt additional work to show mastery of curricular topics. These efforts must be initiated by students, must be completed prior to the end of a grading period, and are offered at the discretion of the individual teacher.

Our class syllabus is directly based on the syllabi of each student’s general education class and their IEP. The curriculum for each student receiving academic instruction in the resource room is based on the goals and objectives identified on their Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P.)   Direct instruction and support services are directly related to the goals and objectives developed by the Case Study Committee. The resource room is not a homework completion class.   Our purpose is to remediate, reinforce, and directly teach skills presented in the students’ curriculum.   I offer homework assistance every day after school to any student wishing to stay.  

Major Concepts/Content: The learning strategies course is designed to introduce concepts

that are necessary to function in a general education environment. The content includes, but is

not limited to, the following concepts: time management, decision-making strategies, following

directions, time-on-task behaviors, use of visual aids, organization of work site, organization of

information, textbook usage strategies, note taking, test-taking strategies, dictionary reference

skills and researching and locating information.

Major Instructional Activities: Instruction will focus on the transfer of skills to the general

education classroom.

Major Evaluative Techniques: Students will be evaluated based on the goals and objectives

on the Individual Education Plans (l.E.P.). Evaluation will be based on written work and teacher

observation and student self-documentation.

Description / Philosophy: Math 8 is also referred to as Pre-algebra. This course will emphasize formulation and reasoning about expressions and equations; grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; and analyzing two and three dimensional space and figures.

Math 8 is the final “training ground” for skills and abilities that will be required to complete the mandatory 4 years of mathematics for high school graduation. While students come to every math class with differing abilities, all students can make progress, whether they are “good at math” or not. Students who have skill or knowledge deficits should expect to spend extra time at home, during seminar, or during after school tutorial sessions to help improve these skills and abilities.

Goals: Students will become fluent in the following:

Working with radicals and integer exponents; Understanding the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations; Defining, evaluating and comparing function; Understanding congruence and similarity using physical models; Understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.

Homework: Homework in math will occur daily. There is an expectation that students will spend 20-30 minutes EVERY day completing task (1) and either of tasks (2) or (3). (1) Pre-work: This will be an assignment to read, view an on-line tutorial, and/or take notes on a topic. Notes will include an essential question (topic), define any new/important vocabulary, highlight key points of the topic, demonstrate the topic using examples, and summarize an answer to the essential question. (2) ASSISTments homework assignment. Approximately 10 on-line problems with hints and feedback that allow the student to show mastery of the topic previously previewed and practiced in class. Description / Philosophy: Algebra1 is the foundational course for high school mathematics. Students expand on their use of operations with specific real numbers and methods for comparing specific numbers to descriptions using variables that represent how numbers and number relationships work more generally. Students become fluent in explaining how to efficiently solve a variety of real-world multi-step problem and predict outcomes from patterns.

This is considered an advanced math course for middle school students. Students are expected to take an active role in their learning; meaning that they will complete assignments to the best of their ability and come to class prepared with questions about points of confusion. There will be an emphasis on students being able to explain how solutions can be derived rather than on memorization of solution algorithms.

Goals: Students will become fluent in the following:

Homework: Homework in math will occur daily. There is an expectation that students will spend 20-30 minutes EVERY day completing task (1) and either of tasks (2) or (3). (1) Pre-work: This will be an assignment to read, view an on-line tutorial, and/or take notes on a topic. Notes will include an essential question (topic), define any new/important vocabulary, highlight key points of the topic, demonstrate the topic using examples, and summarize an answer to the

Late-work Policy: Homework (pre-work and ASSISTments) will be posted in the classroom and on Schoology (see below). While Homework assignments will have a due date, this is to keep students on track for acquiring skills as we move forward. Students who fail to master the practice will be given remediation and further opportunities to demonstrate mastery through practice. However, due to time demands, this may require that students attend the Math Tutorial period held after school on Monday and Tuesday.

Materials Required: All necessary items may be purchased at either the BX on Zama or the NEX on Atsugi. Many on-line options are also available. Homework: Homework is due and will be collected at the beginning of each class period. Homework is one of the measurements for students to know what they are doing well and where they should focus on to overcome their weakness in study. Trying to do homework by oneself is more important than having it done by copying someone else’s correct answers. Any questions about homework are welcome during Seminar and/or after school. Hiragana, Katakana, vocabulary, phrases, and grammar should be reviewed DAILY for at least 15 minutes, even when there is no ‘formally assigned’ homework. Students can also check the assignments on Schoology and GradeSpeed.

Late-Work Policy: Assignments not turned in at the time due will be penalized 10 grade-percentage points per school day until they have reached the minimum grade. Because class work and homework are designed to increase a student’s understanding of the material as they practice, no late work will be accepted past the summative assessment (chapter tests) on that material.

Excused Absences Work / Make-Up Work Policy: All missed work due to excused absences will be given a grade of ZERO until the work has been turned in and corrected. Do NOT wait and come to the next class unprepared. Try to avoid falling behind upon return. It is student’s responsibility to find out what work they have to make up or work on. It is important that each student assumes the responsibility of requesting make-up work from each teacher on the FIRST DAY of their return to school. Students can get assistance with make-up work during Seminar, after school, or during class individual work time. Students will be allowed to turn in make-up work without penalty within the time frame equal to the number of days absent. Assignments submitted after the due-date because a student failed to request the work in a timely fashion will be considered late and graded under the Late Work Policy. Even though a student was not present for instruction on a particular topic does not mean the student cannot attempt an assignment or prepare for the next class. At the very least, the student should be prepared to ask questions at the next class meeting to help them catch up. While teachers may make

Re-Submitting Work Policy: The goal of instruction is for the student to display mastery of the curriculum. Extra-Credit work to help raise a low grade will NOT be given. However, teachers will work individually with students on a case-by-case basis to support a student’s effort to re-submit work or attempt additional work to show mastery of curricular topics. These efforts must be initiated by students, must be completed prior to the end of a grading period, and are offered at the discretion of the individual teacher.

Developmentally appropriate concepts of physical fitness and personal and social development are included in this course. Students apply appropriate physical activity, fitness concepts and attitudes to the development of a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. They demonstrate responsible and safe behavior applying appropriate concepts and attitudes to personal and social development.

Philosophy: My philosophy begins with the core belief that each child is a unique individual who needs a secure, caring, and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, physically, and socially. It is my desire as an educator to help students meet their fullest potential in these areas by providing a teaching environment that is motivating, safe, and positive, supports risk-taking, and promotes respect for all people. I take very seriously the fact that how I treat a child may impact significantly on his or her ability to lead a productive and satisfying life.

It’s my strong belief that good teaching cannot be separated from enthusiasm. Over the years, I have observed many different and varying teaching methods and styles. My teaching style reflects the belief that you must first influence the attitude before you can teach the mind. 1. POSITIVELY no outside shoes may be worn on the gym floor. Students must take off their shoes when they enter the gym.

I suggest all students take advantage of these extra points. In order to salvage an unsatisfactory grade, the student must improve their study habits early enough in the term in order to achieve higher scores on their future assignments. Description / Philosophy: The focus of the grade-eight science standards is on providing

students with the hands-on experiences that give them the active engagement and the concrete examples they require in order to understand basic science concepts. The development of eighth graders’ science skills culminates with their designing an entire controlled scientific investigation, constructing explanations and drawing conclusions from data, and generating questions for further study. Course Description

Computer Applications is a semester long course designed to provide the student with the opportunity to extend

knowledge of and apply various software applications. Using an integrated environment, students will work with

applications in word processing, presentations, desktop publishing, computer graphics, spreadsheets and charts, databases,

and additional web-based applications. Upon completion of the course, students will have the knowledge and skills to

apply these applications in middle school, high school, college, and career activities.

Philosophy

I believe in creating an atmosphere where all students can learn computer applications in a positive supportive

environment. Students will be challenged to learn new applications and improve upon existing computer skills.

Curriculum Materials

Curriculum materials include the textbook South-Western Cengage Learning DIGITOOLS 3e (class set) and computer

based curriculum materials (database & online resources).

Student Materials

#2 pencils, blue or black ink pens, highlighter and a section for Computer Applications in a three-ringed binder.

Assignments/Homework

Most or all work is done in class. Assignments are given to practice what we learn in group tutorials and individual

instruction. Written assignment instructions including grading rubrics will be posted electronically in the Computer

Applications – assignments folder on the T:drive for their class period. Assignment due dates will be posted in class and

students will be prompted every class to write due dates in their planner. Work done outside the classroom will be

accepted only if class time is used first. That means – you cannot talk through class and then do your work at home to turn

in later. Additionally, it is important that you only use the classroom computers for Computer Applications assignments

and not for entertainment.

Student work should be saved in a folder they create, named Computer Applications, on the H:drive (school network

drive). The majority of assignments will be turned in electronically (drag and drop from H:drive) to the T:drive Computer

Applications turn-in folder under my name on the school computer network. Students will be trained at the beginning of

the semester on how to create a Computer Applications folder on the H:drive and how to turn in assignments to the

T:drive Computer Applications turn-in folder.

Grading Policy

Assignments will be graded based on assignment instructions and grading rubrics provided to students.

In general, points are assigned in the following manner:

Absent Work Policy

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to make up work when you return. If a student is absent from class, they are

responsible for all assignments given and held to the due date. For example: A student misses an A day class and returns

to school the following day (B day), the student must stop in to find out what he/she missed and complete the assignment

at home to turn in the following day (A day). Make-up work for excused and unexcused absences will be in accordance

with school guidelines.

Late Work Policy

Computer Applications

Completing assignments in a timely manner is the responsibility of every student. Class work and homework are

designed as practice to increase a student’s understanding of the material. My late work philosophy is that if a student is

allowed to turn in assignments late without a penalty, the student will be conditioned and enabled to act irresponsibly in

many aspects of his/her life in the future. Furthermore, teachers have due dates for recording grades and providing timely

feedback to students. Students who have a legitimate reason for turning in work late need to communicate with me in a

timely manner regarding the late assignment. Assignments not turned in by the due date (at the beginning of class on that

date) are considered late. Late work will be accepted up to two class periods after the due date with a penalty. For

example, if an assignment was due on Monday and turned in at the beginning of the next class period on Wednesday; the

assignment would be considered one class period late. Late work will be penalized 10 grade-percentage points per school

day until they have reached the minimum grade. Any work not turned in will be recorded as a 0 in the grade book. Please

check Gradespeed frequently for any missing assignments.

Tutoring/Extra Help

My goal is to help every student be successful. I am available during seminar and after school for additional help. I

prefer students to schedule an appointment for after school help to ensure I am not absent during a school meeting.

Classroom Management

Every student is entitled to learn in a safe, positive, and supportive environment allowing all to reach their highest

academic and behavioral success. The purpose of a classroom management plan is to support student success in the

classroom. Zama American Middle School has established the P.R.I.D.E. principles to promote school-wide expectations

for behavior based on these principles.

Five Guiding Principles Supporting Student Behavior:

• Responsibility: be responsible for my learning and the learning of those around me

backpacks or purses; small drawstring ditty bags are allowed in the classroom. 4. Dress, behave, and speak in a manner

that demonstrates respect to other students, staff, and visitors. 5. No food, beverages, or chewing gum in the computer lab.

6. Don't disconnect the computer keyboards or mouse unless we need to change them. 7. Leave your computer work

station better than you found it. 8. The computers are for educational purposes only; no online chatting or use of non-

There are consequences for not adhering to the rules to help enforce student accountability and responsibility. The

consequences are as follows: 1. Verbal warning or non-verbal warning. 2. Teacher directed help to improve student

behavior. 3. Teacher assigned detention, teacher/student conference and notification to parent sponsor/guardian (email or

phone call). 4. Teacher/student conference, notification to parent sponsor/guardian (email or phone call) and after school

detention. 5. Administrative referral (office). Consequences and steps will be in accordance with the severity of the

behavior.

Academic Dishonesty

Students will work individually and in group learning activities in class. Students are encouraged to share ideas and

information. However, one student may not provide his/her completed work to another student to copy. This is

considered cheating and will result in a grade of zero (0), with no possibility for make-up work, for both the person

providing the work and the person copying the work.

Mathematics Grade 8 Overview

The Math 8 pre-Algebra course follows the college and career readiness standards for grade 8. The Number System,

Expressions and Equations, Functions, Geometry, Statistics and Probability are all curricular areas of focus. Students will

work with rational and irrational numbers, radicals, integer exponents, and understand the connections between

proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations. Additionally, students will define, evaluate, and compare functions.

Geometric concepts will also be explored including congruence, the Pythagorean Theorem, and solving real-world

problems involving cylinders, cones, and spheres. Finally, students will explore concepts in statistical analysis and

probability. It is expected that students are familiar with the basic operations for integers (positive and negative ‘counting’

numbers, …-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3…) repeating (.027027027…) and terminating (.3285) decimals, and fractions.

Furthermore, it is expected that students know the multiplication tables up to 12 and can factor single, double, and three

digit numbers.

Throughout the course, students will develop the ability to: explore and solve mathematical problems, think critically,

work cooperatively with others, and communicate mathematical ideas clearly. Students will be expected to explore what

they know and don’t know about math up to this point in regular journal entries. There will be a greater emphasis on the

ability to explain mathematical concepts and use them in combination in real-life applications.

Curriculum Materials

The curriculum materials for Math 8 will include standards based work-sheets/hand-outs and internet-based curriculum

materials (based on CCRS standards). Additionally, we will be using the ASSISTments online math practice solution.

Daily Math journal writing/Pre-class Homework

1. Students will have homework and respond to journal prompts. There will also be time each day for class work to

practice/reinforce new concepts. The homework assignments require the student to take notes in their Math journal.

Students should read the material prior to the next class, identify the main idea/key concepts, summarize the main

idea/key concepts with examples in their journal, and attempt the problems assigned with the examples in the textbook

and/or hand-out. These assignments are due at the beginning of class.

Homework assignments will be worth 5 points each based on the inclusion of the following:

a. Ask an Essential Question: (this can be developed by turning the main idea of the section into a question of set of

questions to be answered. For example, the main topic “Solving Two-step Algebra Problems” can be turned into the

question, “How can I solve Two-step Algebra Problems?” The student should then read the examples and,

b. Complete the problems assigned (given in class) out of the textbook and/or hand-out….and,

c. Define/use the new vocabulary (students should try to use the vocabulary correctly or define it in their own words)

and,

d. Answer the Essential Question as thoroughly as one is able.

Daily Math Journal Writing/Pre-Class Homework Grading: 5 pts - all four elements complete, 4 pts - one element

missing/incomplete, 3 pts - two elements missing/incomplete, 2 pts - three/four elements missing or not completed

2. Students should share the concepts from class daily with their parents.

3. Students should attempt additional problems/examples as needed based on their understanding of the material. These

additional examples should be done at a minimum prior to each test (summative assessment). These are not graded. The

“grade” is ultimately reflected in the test score.

Aside from the daily preview assignments, students should be doing most of their graded work in class. My expectation is

that each student will work as hard as they can in class to finish the activity during the class period.

4. However, some students work faster and/or grasp concepts and processes more readily than others. If a student cannot

finish during class, he/she should take the work home to finish. If he/she needs assistance, please see me during seminar

or schedule an appointment to see me after school.

Classroom Practice

Classroom practice will be completed in class. Each day in class, students will have the opportunity to ask questions

based on their understanding of the reading and practice. They will also take notes and complete individual or small group

practice problems to better understand the material. Notes and practice problems will be kept in the individual student’s

Math journal. Sometimes practice problems will be completed on a hand-out.

Classroom Practice Grading: 5 pts – all problems attempted and checked, 4 pts – most problems attempted and checked, 3

pts – fewer than 50% of problems attempted and checked. *****Students may use their journals for assistance on tests.

This is an additional incentive to take detailed, accurate notes, to raise clarifying questions, and to complete illustrative

examples.

ASSISTments

Students will be assigned practice problems online using the online ASSISTments math practice program. Students will

be trained at the beginning of the school year on how to use ASSISTments. ASSISTments problems will be graded.

Check for Understanding (Exit Ticket)/Tests/Projects

Students will usually be assessed near the end of each class period for their understanding of the daily lesson and practice.

This is called "Check for Understanding" and is the student’s exit ticket from class. The purpose of "Check for

Understanding" is to determine student’s level of ongoing mastery of the concepts being learned in class and provide more

frequent feedback.

Tests will occur at the end of each chapter and/or unit of study. Class work, homework, individual practice, and journal

entry activities will be the basis for review for tests (summative assessment). Students are encouraged to prepare for tests

by reviewing material in their Math journal, completing review hand-outs and review questions, participate in class during

test reviews, and seek help prior to the test as needed. Projects will be assigned once per quarter to develop a deeper

understanding and/or to demonstrate real-life applications of mathematical concepts.

Tests/Projects are graded on either a rubric or percent completed correctly (mastery level). Tests/Projects may be retaken

for a maximum of 80% (if the original is completed on time) in order to allow a student to better master material before

moving on. It is up to the individual student to arrange time for make-up attempts (see Re-submitting Work). Students

who find they are not getting enough practice through homework or class assignments should seek out additional help

during seminar (clarification for minor difficulties) or during homework club after school (for more intensive,

individualized assistance).

Grading

I believe that grades should reflect the level of subject matter mastery. Grade weights and distribution reflect the level of

importance and difficulty of the task. Grades are also perceived by students as an incentive to work. Therefore, practice

work is rewarded and test grades may be made-up for better mastery. Extra credit work is not given.

Homework/Journals/Individual practice is assessed for the completeness of the attempt. The only way to fail to get full

marks for these assignments is to not attempt them. Assignments including homework not turned in by the due date (at

the beginning of class on that date) are considered late. Late work will be accepted up to two class periods after the due

date with a penalty. For example, if an assignment was due on Monday and turned in at the beginning of the next class

period on Wednesday; the assignment would be considered one class period late. Late work will be penalized 10 grade-

percentage points per school day until they have reached the minimum grade. Any work not turned in will be recorded as

a 0 in the grade book. Please check GradeSpeed frequently for any missing assignments.

DoDEA sets grades on percentage correct as follows: 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 = C, 60-69 = D, < 60 = F

Coursework Grade Weighting

The work for this course is split among five areas:

1. Daily Math journal writing including "Warm-Up" problems/Pre-class homework/Classroom daily practice – weighted

30%

2. ASSISTments practice problems – weighted 10%

3. Class Participation – weighted 10%

4. Check for Understanding formative assessments- weighted 10%

5. Summative assessments (chapter/unit tests to check mastery levels, projects) – weighted 40%

Re-submitting Work

Tests may be retaken for a maximum of 80% in order to allow a student to better master material before moving on. It is

up to the individual student to arrange time for make-up attempts. Tests must be retaken within one school week of the

original test during seminar or after school. Students who wish to retake a chapter/unit test MUST correctly summarize

the concept (s) missed on the test. In addition, they must demonstrate their understanding by correctly answering the

questions they missed. Resubmitted work without an accurate summary will not be credited. No grade will be lowered

by a student trying to improve his/her score.

Classroom Management

Every student is entitled to learn in a safe, positive, and supportive environment allowing all to reach their highest

academic and behavioral success. The purpose of a classroom management plan is to support student success in the

classroom. Zama American Middle School has established the P.R.I.D.E. principles to promote school-wide expectations

for behavior based on these principles.

Five Guiding Principles Supporting Student Behavior:

• Preparation: be ready to learn and participate in my education

• Responsibility: be responsible for my learning and the learning of those around me

• Integrity: do the right thing even when no one is watching

• Determination: exhibit a determined attitude to do my best in all tasks

Samurai Pride starts inside and we can all help each other by promoting kindness and mutual respect in the classroom. In

addition to following the P.R.I.D.E. principles, I expect students to follow these classroom rules and all school rules listed

in the student handbook. 1. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings. 2. Bring all required materials to class. 3. No

backpacks or purses; small drawstring ditty bags are allowed in the classroom. 4. Dress, behave, and speak in a manner

that demonstrates respect to other students, staff, and visitors. 5. No eating in class unless given prior approval. 6. All

non-educational personal electronic devices (i.e. cell phones) are not allowed in the classroom. 7. Follow all computer use

and access rules detailed in student handbook.

There are consequences for not adhering to the rules to help enforce student accountability and responsibility. The

consequences are as follows: 1. Verbal warning or non-verbal warning. 2. Teacher directed help to improve student

behavior. 3. Teacher assigned detention, teacher/student conference and notification to parent sponsor/guardian (email or

phone call). 4. Teacher/student conference, notification to parent sponsor/guardian (email or phone call) and after school

detention. 5. Administrative referral (office). Consequences and steps will be in accordance with the severity of the

behavior.

Academic Dishonesty

Students will work individually and in group learning activities in class. Students are encouraged to share ideas and

information and even to show each other methods for problem solving. However, one student may not provide his/her

completed work to another student to copy. This is considered cheating and will result in a grade of zero (0), with no

possibility for make-up work, for both the person providing the work and the person copying the work.

Overview Welcome to Visual & Graphic Art! While both classes will share content, concepts, techniques, and processes, each will have a concentration of focus. Traditional 2-D & 3-D studio arts will be the focus of visual art class, while digital media such as photography and PhotoShop are the focus of graphic art. Students will keep a photo journal & a drawing sketchbook. Homework will be assigned in the form of practice drawings and photographs using specific techniques. Drawing techniques such as one and two point perspective, proportional guidelines of the face and body, foreshortening, gesture drawing, and others, will be among the first skills taught in Visual Art. In Graphic Art, photography assignments will be compiled into a Photo Journal PowerPoint for submission.

• All students will complete a self-portrait as a snapshot in time to tell us who they are at this moment in their lives. Each year this self-image will evolve to reflect new understandings and ideals.

• Students will alter their own photographs and create original art using PhotoShop software. Students having access to cameras at home should take as many photos as possible throughout the semester to provide maximum creative choice when creating PhotoShop masterpieces. Film, digital, and Smartphone cameras, as well as cameras on other devices such as iPods and DS players will work as a student’s source of original

photos. School provided digital cameras will also be available to students for in-class photography. Art is a learned skill & I believe everyone has great potential. The trick is finding the creative process that brings you joy and fits your personality and style. By the end of the year students will have gained experience, knowledge, and will have increased their mastery of skills in a variety of 2-D and 3-D processes, and in digital media. Students will have a foundation in art history to build upon. This art history knowledge base will provide new connections to world culture and history, bridging the subjects and classes together for students. Students will creatively problem-solve, interpret and infer the meaning of symbolism in various art forms, and create their own visual vocabulary of personal symbolism. The creative thinking and problem solving skills developed will enhance student success no matter what field of study they choose to enter later in life.

Description: Students in grade eight study the ideas, issues, and events leading to framing of the Constitution through Reconstruction. After reviewing the development of America’s democratic institutions, they learn about the challenges facing the new nation, with an emphasis on the causes, course, and consequences of the Civil War. Homework:

Homework is designed to practice concepts learned in class and to provide students another resource for assessment preparation. Homework assignments are written on a class calendar, discussed and written in student planners.

Late-work Policy: Students may turn in late assignments prior to assessment. Homework is intended to help a child prepare for assessment, homework will not be accepted after the assessment. Late assignments will receive a deduction of 10% and may be turned in prior to the assessment.

Materials Required: Students should come to class with either a pencil or pen. Students will use two pocket portfolios with 3 tangs to organize notes and homework.

Schoology Course Access: At this time, I do not use Schoology to document assignments or for communication with students.

Textbook: Davidson and Stoff, History of Our Nation: Prentice Hall
