Zambeef is the largest beef producer in Zambia and the company also provides feedlot services, manufactures milk, chicken, eggs, leather and shoes. Within their portfolio they operate a fast food restaurant chain and a trucking company, including a fleet of refrigerated vehicles. Zambeef grows crops, including wheat, maize, lucerne and soybeans, grows feed, and operates feed processing plants around Zambia.

BEEF RETAIL IS Alive And Kicking

Zambeef was incorporated in 1994, with limited capital,

employing 60 staff, slaughtering 180 cattle per month

in a small, rented abattoir and delivering meat in a Land

Rover for selling through a pair of rented butcheries. From humble

beginnings as an incorporated small scale start-up business, they

have grown through both organic growth and acquisitions to become

one of Zambia’s largest agri-businesses with annual revenues of

approximately US$255 million and an employee number of over five

and half thousand staff.

In June 2011, Zambeef successfully concluded its dual listing on

the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.

The Banker magazine named Zambeef’s US$55 million listing in

London and rights issue in Zambia as 2012’s ‘Deal of the Year’ in

Africa for equities. The magazine commended the landmark listing for

Zambeef, saying the company’s initial public offering (IPO) on London’s

Alternative Investments Market in June 2011 was significant in many

ways.

country had listed internationally and was one of the few overseas

Principally involved in the production, processing, distribution

and retailing of beef, chicken, pork, milk, dairy products, eggs, edible

oils, stock feed, flour and bread, the Group also has a large cereal row

cropping operation and is in the process of rolling out a West Africa

expansion and a palm project.

Ultimately, Zambeef’s strategy is to be the most affordably

accessible quality protein provider in the region and to increase the

efficient capacity of its primary production facilities.

business model, from primary production to processing, distribution

John Deere Dealer for over 80 years

pork product retail industry and operates one of the largest piggeries,

abattoirs and pork processing plants in Zambia. With a capability of

slaughtering up to one hundred thousand pigs per year.

Milk and dairy products are an obvious product that Zambeef

have been able to capitalize on, with their own dairy farm and almost

two thousand heads of cattle, they produce four million litres of milk

a year. This milk is pasteurised and homogenised in a modern milk

processing plant and Zambeef have produced many favourites such

as drinking yoghurt, cheese, butter and milk based juices.

In 2010, Zambeef commissioned a stock feed plant as part of a

plan to increase its production of this product, initially to cater for its

internal livestock divisions and with a long term vision to be one of the

leading stock feed suppliers in Zambia. Currently, the plant operates

at a full capacity of seven thousand tons per month, adding value to

the protein by product of one of their subsidiaries Zamanita, who are

leaders in the edible oils sector.

The strength of the company originates in the strength and

direction of their retail sector,The vast majority of Zambeef’s food

products are retailed directly to the end consumer through Zambeef’s

Zambeef has one of the largest irrigated row cropping operations

in Zambia, with 8,350 Ha for irrigated and 8,650 Ha for rain fed,

developed land available for planting each year. Crop production is

focused primarily on soya beans during summer cropping season and

wheat during winter cropping season; with a capacity to produce over

100,000 tons of cereal grains per annum. The group also has storage

capacity of over 115,000 tons.

As their name suggests, Zambeef is one of the largest suppliers of

beef in Zambia, with a capacity to slaughter 120,00 cattle per annum.

They are also one of the largest feed lotters of quality beef in Zambia,

with a capacity to feedlot 24,000 grain-fed cattle p.a. Zambeef

currently runs eight abattoirs and three feedlots located throughout

Zambia.

IN addition to the beef products, Zambeef is one of the largest

chicken and egg producers in the county processing over five million

chickens and forty million eggs per annum. This has warranted

significant investments into new layer and broiler houses planned for

2014 as well as a new chicken abattoir.

Through Masterpork LTD, Zambeef has a strong foothold on the

extensive retail network. In

fact, Zambeef has one of the

leading distribution and retail

footprints in Zambia, which

currently consists of 91 retail

outlets, 3 wholesale centres, 6

fast food outlets and 20 Shoprite

butcheries.

The three wholesale centres

were originated in 2011 in order

to attract the large informal and

commercial sector in Zambia and

they have continued to invest

and upgrade existing stores as

well as opening new retail outlets

every year. Additionally, to

support the convoluted network

of activities they operate one

of the largest transport and

trucking fleets in Zambia and has

its own workshop to service and

maintain its vehicle fleet.

2014 is looking to be a busy

year for Zambeef, as the group

are in the process of rolling

out its West Africa expansion

in Nigeria and Ghana, as well

as developing a palm project in

Zambia. Further investment is

planned for 2014 to improve

the efficiencies and capacity of

the stock feed processes as well

as the new ruminant plant to

support their edible oils sector.
