TORONTO - Toronto Real Estate Board President Paul Etherington announcedthat Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® reported 4,635 home sales duringthe first 14 days of April 2015. This result represented a 3.4 per cent in-crease compared to April 2014. New listings over the same period weredown by 4.6 per cent year over year."Home sales in the GTA continued to increase in comparison to 2014 as adiversity of buyers took advantage of affordable home ownership options. However, in many neighbourhoods, listings remain scarce, particularly forground-oriented home types like singles, semis and towns. Given theamount of pent-up demand in the market today, sales growth would accel-erate further if more homes were listed for sale," said Etherington. The average selling price for April mid-month home sales was $625,121 -up seven per cent in comparison to the same time frame in 2014. Averageprices were up for all major home types, both in the City of Toronto and thesurrounding regions."We are experiencing balanced to seller's market conditions in most areasand market segments in the GTA. This suggests that home ownershipdemand is being driven by a wide swath of the population. On one hand, strong growth in condo listings has been met with strong growth in condosales. On the other hand, we have also experienced growth in higher-endhome sales," said Jason Mercer, TREB's Director of Market Analysis.

STAR WARS-LIKE ROBOT TOCLEAN HOSPITAL ROOMS
Fun spring apparel tocelebrate the season
Washington, (IANS) A device that bears a striking resemblance to thefictional robot in Star Wars film series known as R2-D2 can clean ahospital room just as well as a human being and prevent the spread of"superbugs", says an Indian-origin researcher.Chetan Jinadatha, assistant professor at the Texas A&M College ofMedicine, studied the effectiveness of this germ-zapping robot calledpulsed xenon ultraviolet (UV) light system. When compared the effec-tiveness of manual disinfection alone to manual disinfection plus theuse of UV light, Jinadatha earlier found that manual cleaning plus UVlight killed more than 90 percent of the bacteria, compared to 70 percent with manual cleaning alone.
Of par ticular note was the fact that manual disinfection plus UV lightkilled 99 percent of the bacteria that cause MRSA, he noted. In hislatest study, Jinadatha looked at the effectiveness of the UV light dis-infection by itself. This study found that in just 12 minutes, the UV lightsystem cut the amount of bacteria in the room by about 70 per cent -- roughly the same level of effectiveness as manual disinfection. The device has a large saucer-shaped head on top of a column thatrises up to reveal a bulb filled with xenon gas, Jinadatha noted. Whenthe system is switched on, high-voltage electricity passes throughthe bulb and releases a spectrum of the UV light that binds to the DNAof organisms and kills them. The study was published in the Ameri-can Journal of Infection Control.

Maharashtra model town fascinatesinternational beauties
l i f e s t y l e
Mumbai, (IANS) A once-barren nor thern Maharashtra town, which has turned into a model-town and drawn global attentionfor its unique achievements, was visited by Miss World 2014Rolene Strauss and Miss England 2015 Carina Tyrrell this week. The two beauty queens, accompanied by Miss WorldOrganisation Chairwoman Julia Morley and Director Steve Dou-glas visited Shirpur town for two days despite the blisteringheat and dust of summer. Guided by Amrish R. Patel, the presi-dent of Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVPKM) (Mumbai),the visitors viewed the various initiatives under taken for waterconservation, women empowerment, education for underprivi-leged, and health for the tribals. They also heard farmers' success stories. Shirpur, around 375km from Mumbai in Dhule district bordering Madhya Pradesh, was once mentioned for its pover ty, barrenness and perpetualdrought, insufficient water for people and animals. It was gen-erally viewed as an uninhabitable place."What drew us to the Shirpur is the success story of the peopleof this region who have turned this infer tile land into a man-made oasis with passion and hard work of past two decades,"an awed Miss World Strauss told mediapersons here on Thurs-day after a two-day tour of the town. The facelift of Shirpurstar ted after Patel took over as president of Shirpur-WarvadeMunicipal Council in 1985.

ORANGE GLASSES MAY HELPYOU SLEEP BETTERNew York, (IANS) You may have a great night's sleep if you puton orange glasses some hours before going to bed, says astudy.Orange glasses have been found to block cer tain wavelengthsof light emitted by electronic screens which hamper our sleepcycle, making it easier for us to sleep.Studies have shown that light from the blue par t of the spec-trum, inhibits the body's production of melatonin, a hormonethat helps people fall asleep.A Swiss study of 13 teenage boys showed that when the boysdonned orange-tinted glasses -- also known as blue blockersand shown to prevent melatonin suppression -- in the eveningfor a week, they felt "significantly more sleepy" than when theywore clear glasses. The boys looked at their screens for at least a few hours onaverage before going to bed, and were monitored. The findingswere published in The Journal of Adolescent Health.Older adults may be less affected by blue light, experts said, since the yellowing of the lens and other changes in the ageingeye filter out increasing amounts of blue light. But blue light remains a problem for most people, and an ear-lier study of 20 adults ages 18 to 68 found that those who woreamber-tinted glasses for three hours before going to bed im-proved their sleep quality considerably relative to a controlgroup that wore yellow-tinted lenses, which blocked only ul-traviolet light, The New York Times repor ted.
