Emory University
Spring 2015
FRATERNITY LASTS A LIFETIME IN THIS ISSUE
Chapter Sets New Record for Community Service Hours
In the fall semester, Eta Lambda broke its own record for community service hours fulfilled by the active brotherhood. Through a variety of events, like the Emory Miracle Dance Marathon and the New Member Date Auction, personal hours spent volunteering at food kitchens, as Emergency Medical Technicians, and at various afterschool programs with sick and underprivileged children, our chapter is well on its way to complete its goal of 500 total service hours.
Eta Lambda Welcomes 19 New Members
In January, 2014, Eta Lambda welcomed 19 new freshmen into the chapter. Involved in a wide
range of events and hailing from different backgrounds, these new members are well-‐positioned to continue building ZBT’s pristine reputation on Emory’s campus.

Alumni Take Center Stage
For the third time in chapter history, Eta Lambda hosted a formal Alumni Weekend this spring. Created by the hard work of both alumni and active members, the inaugural event this year was another huge success.

Brother Spotlight: David Bailey Accomplishment: 100 Senior Honorary
Question #1-‐ David, being nominated for the 100 Senior Honorary is a huge honor. What do you think made you a good candidate?-‐ "I would say that I spend a lot of time at Emory in my extra curricular activities, finding ways to bridge the gap between the student body and the alumni community. I've come to realize that Emory is an experience that continues beyond your undergraduate career. So I've spent the past 4 years finding ways to integrate alumni into the undergraduate experience through student programming events."
Question #2-‐ What are some of these extra curricular activities that you are involved in?-‐ "I am a part of the Student Government Association, serving as the VP of alumni relations. I am also on the student alumni board serving as the VP for external affairs. I am also on the Alumni Board as a student representative."
Question #3-‐ Why do you have a passion for alumni relations?-‐ "Emory alumni are unique in that they continue to care about the university and dedicate their time and energy to improving the campus as a whole. They are always willing to speak with students about their interests and pursuits, and have been a crucial component to the advancement of the Emory community."
Question #4-‐ Final question, what is your favorite room in the house to be in?-‐ "Madhav's room because every time I'm in there, I have no idea what is going on."
Our brotherhood was honored to host over 40 members of our alumni class this year for our second annual alumni weekend. Each year it is a very special to welcome back our alumni, as they have had a significant role in shaping the fraternity experience of each member of the active brotherhood. This year was particularly unique, being that it is our last in 8 Eagle Row. It is safe to say that one of the major unifying factors that exists between our active brotherhood and alumni base is that the majority of us hold fond memories of our time at 8 Eagle Row. This weekend was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our time at 8 Eagle Row as well as to celebrate our new housing assignment at 22 Eagle Row, which is a testament to the commitment made by all members of ZBT Eta Lambda, both active and alumni, to continuously improve and build a powerhouse of excellence with a major presence on Emory's campus. Our housing assignment at 22 Eagle Row is the reward of job well done to this date, and provides the foundation to continue our growth and development. The active brotherhood would not be where it is today without our alumni, and we are thrilled to say that this year’s alumni weekend was a huge success!
"The most amazing part of Alumni Weekend was how quickly everyone reconnected. I loved reconnecting with guys who I haven't spoken to since they graduated and meeting the guys who came before me. The weekend was really special." -‐Dan Eidell Class of 2014
"It was great to spend time with my fraternity family and meet all of the older alumni. I was also really impressed with what I learned at the alumni-‐moderated career panels." -‐Jordan Rubin Class of 2017

Alumni Weekend a Huge Success!
ZBT ETA LAMBDA EMORY UNIVERSITY | Issue 8 3
Similarly to previous years, the brothers of ZBT have been working to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network through our major annual charity event, Get On The Ball. We have also been able to help the Children's Miracle Network through other university events like the Emory Miracle Dance Marathon, on which two
ZBT brothers serve on the executive board, and the New Member Date Auction.
Moreover, the Eta Lambda chapter is well on its way to completing our intended goal of 500 total community service hours for the semester. Brothers have served the
local Atlanta community in a variety of ways, including blood drives, working with habitat for humanity, volunteering at local hospitals, and participating in Emory's Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. We are very excited at the possibly of setting a new chapter record for most service hours in a semester.
Spring semester was a great semester for Eta Lambda. From philanthropy to brotherhood and beyond, 2014-‐2015 was a great year.
Ø Annual Alumni Weekend, March 21-‐23, 2015
Building on the already-‐popular ZBT Emory Golf Classic, the chapter has transformed the golf tournament into the centerpiece of a full-‐fledged weekend dedicated to the lifelong bonds of brotherhood. Alumni and active brothers alike will share in activities ranging from a Happy Hour reception and trip to Atlanta’s-‐own Sweetwater Brewery, to industry focus panels and other events designed to connect alumni with the men who now wear their letters.
Ø ZBT Presents: Get On The Ball! March 22-‐29, 2015
The chapter’s major spring philanthropy event, GOTB is a trademark ZBT event nationwide.
Chapter members spend a week rolling a six-‐foot wide beach ball around campus collecting signatures from other students and faculty. Partnering with local and other corporate sponsorships, the chapter raises money based on the number of signatures collected.

Ø Brotherhood Camping Trip and
Spring Formal (March 29 and April 11-‐12, respectively)
Two of the most anticipated events of the chapter year, the camping trip and Formal allow for the last celebrations of brotherhood before the Spring Exam period.

Max Mayblum Goizueta Business School 2016 President-‐ ZBT Eta Lambda
Letter from the President:
Dear friends, alumni, and family of the Eta Lambda chapter of Zeta Beta Tau,
Last weekend (3/20-3/22) marked our second annual Alumni Weekend, which was attended by over 45 fantastic alumni. Some highlights of the weekend include a trip to Sweetwater Brewery, a Saturday-morning golf tournament, another successful round of Alumni-moderated career panels, and our traditional big brother ceremony. This year’s attendance was nearly double that of last years, and we hope to see continued success in the future. The weekend could not have happened without the time and energy of senior Gil Kaplun, who was a motivating force behind the event’s planning. For those of you who we were fortunate enough to have in attendance at our annual weekend, thank you, and please excuse any updates detailed below that you might have gotten while on campus.
It brings me great pleasure to announce that the current state of Eta Lambda is strong. Between Fall and Spring rush, we added 21 new members this year. This spring, our newest class is 19 members, the second largest on the row. More than quantity, though, we are proud of the quality of men we have brought into the chapter. These men have demonstrated strong campus involvement, extraordinary character, an eager willingness to become involved within the chapter, and most importantly—unbreakable bonds of brotherhood amongst their class and the brotherhood at large. We are proud and thankful of the effort and leadership shown by our rush chairmen, sophomores Elan Radick and Stephen Weiner, throughout the entire past semester as they worked hard to further ZBT’s legacy of recruiting men of sound character.
With 84 members, we have invested heavy emphasis in the brotherhood program, only bolstering the bonds we have made here. The brotherhood recently voted to split the executive board positions of Provost and Brotherhood Development Director, designating the responsibilities of new member education to the Provost, allowing the Brotherhood Development Director to focus on constant quality programming. Since the split, brothers have enjoyed large events such as a trip to UGA, an Atlanta Hawks game, rafting on the Chattahoochee, and look forward to enjoying the annual spring camping trip, an Atlanta Braves game, and our Spring formal at Panama City Beach. Equally as exciting as these large events, the brothers consistently enjoy programs such as midnight kickball on McDonough Field, chill and grills in the pit, perpetual intramural averageness, and a weekly FIFA and NHL league. Our current Brotherhood Development Director, Jake Sheetz, has done an outstanding job and deserves the highest of praise for facilitating such constant programming.
Our relationship with the city of Atlanta, Emory administration, and the Greek community has strengthened with time and effort of brothers. In the larger community, we have raised thousands of dollars for Children’s Miracle Network through campaigns such as the sale of WOBO tanks; and with a semester minimum of 6 hours of community service for each brother, we have spent over 500 hours this semester already bettering Atlanta. With administration, we have earned great standing through the pursuit of academic excellence and campus-wide leadership. On top of maintaining this outstanding record, ZBT has boomed among the Greek community, allowing us to facilitate great events like Safe-Smart Dating with SDT, a 5-way dinner and mixer with Multicultural Greek Council organizations, and our upcoming annual ZBTahiti party, which we will be celebrating in the Atlanta sun, as we have moved to be a daytime party.
The most pervasive news for our chapter is the housing move. After a 5-year stay at 8 Eagle Row, we are going to bid this house farewell. This house has done a lot for us—we have grown in numbers, in quality, in reputation, in brotherhood, and in significance. But the reality is, 8 Eagle Row is just a facility. As I said to the brothers when delivering this news, you can give Michael Phelps a new bathing suit, and he will still win gold; you can give Usain Bolt new shoes, and he will still shatter records. Give us a new house, and we will still stand strong, as a powerhouse of excellence. No house can change that. 22 Eagle Row will provide a new space for the next phase in our perpetually growing brotherhood. A couple of highlights of the new house are an enormous deck and a basketball court in the parking lot. The rooms are smaller in size than they are in 8 Eagle Row, but there is more common space, a change that we are happily embracing. No matter the circumstances, ZBT has continued to climb, with no limits in sight. We are genuinely excited to move into our new house next year, and begin writing the next chapter in our book. The alumni and seniors have established an outstanding foundation for our brotherhood, and we owe the brightness of our future to them. We are excited to see what lies ahead, and are confident that we will forge forward with our fraternity’s tradition of excellence. We appreciate you for taking the time to read our newsletter, and thank you for continuing to be invested in the status and well-being of our chapter. Our doors are always open, and I would love to hear your comments, concerns, and general feedback. My email is [email protected], and look forward to hearing from you. As always, it is great to be a Zeeb.
Cordially, Fraternally, and Sincerely,
Max Mayblum
