FUJITSU Zero Client Licensing Service User Guide
The Zero Client Controller Licence Model The Zero Client Controller (ZCC) has a perpetual software licence model with optionally orderable
one-year-extensions of the right to update to the most recent version. The version of ZCC installed
either at the time of purchase or at expiry of your update right period can continue to be used for
an unlimited time period.
Additional extensions of the right to update the Zero Client Controller are device-dependent and
thus have to be purchased for each Zero Client device that is active within your installation. As a
result, the total time period of update-right is measured in device-years. The scope of the
installation is a ZCC-site, i.e. all Zero Client devices managed by a single instance of the Zero Client
Maestro or Zero Client Controller (if Maestro is not used). Each site has a unique site ID, visible in
the Zero Client Licensing Service.
The individual extensions are accumulated to a device-years-pool in the Zero Client Licensing
Service. From this pool the extension is evenly distributed to all Zero Client devices in the ZCC-site.
The pool can be restocked by purchasing additional extensions.
Each Zero Client comes with a one year right to update. This right is bound to the device itself and
will not distribute within the pool.
The Zero Client Licensing Service The Zero Client Licensing Service (ZCLS) is a virtual appliance running within your infrastructure.
Starting with version 5.0 of the ZCC you will be required to run one instance of the licensing service
in combination with each Zero Client Controller appliance. The licensing service needs no direct
access to the internet for activation or other purposes.
You can access the licensing service through a web interface showing your licensing status. From
the interface it is possible to manage your licences including import and export. Here you will also
find your unique site ID which you will need for activation.
Setup of the Zero Client Licensing Service The ZCLS is delivered as a virtual appliance, supporting virtual infrastructures with:
VMware : ESX, ESXi, vCenter, View
Citrix: XenDesktop with either ESX, XenServer or Hyper-V
Microsoft: Hyper-V with SCVMM
Run the appliance within the same infrastructure as your ZCC. In case you want to change the IP
address of the appliance, connect to your appliance console and use the configuration options
presented there.
-
4
Further configuration of the ZCLS is done over a web browser. Connect to the ZCLS by entering
http://name_or_IP_of _ZCLS_appliance/ into your browser and following the configuration steps.
Activation
Your licensing environment requires activation. On initial setup it will run as a 14 day trial version
with no limitations. Without activation the licensing service will not allow you to update or restore
into a newer version of the Zero Client Controller, although you are allowed to manage your service
update rights (licences).
Activation can be done in two ways, depending on your case. Choose the appropriate option.
Activation by migrating from another installation
In case you want to replace an instance of your ZC licensing service, choose the upgrade option for
the update of an existing installation.
You will be asked to specify the inventory data exported from the instance you want to replace.
-
5
After completing the import, all data will be available in this instance. You can skip through the
remaining configuration steps.
Activation of a New Licensing Service Environment
Choose this option if this is the first time you are setting up a licensing service for a Zero Client
Controller.
You have to apply for an activation key by following the link presented. (See chapter: Activating
your site below)
-
6
The processing of your activation request will take a few days. The licensing service will run as a
trial version for 14 days or until you enter the activation key (See chapter: Activating your site).
User Data
You have the option to modify the account used to manage the licence data. Please make sure to
remember the account data.
-
7
Configuration of Zero Client Controller
Establish communication between the licensing service and the Zero Client Controller by specifying
the IP address of the Zero Client Controller.
Verify that the connection is established by pressing the button.
Check values
In the final step you are presented a summary of your configuration, including the date when your
grace period ends and activation becomes mandatory.
-
8
Finish
Upon completion of the configuration the ZCLS will connect to your ZCC and retrieve the licensing
relevant device data.
Activating your site The request for a new activation key is done on the Fujitsu Zero Client licence activation web portal
http://activationserver.ts.fujitsu.com/zclm/key.aspx. You have to enter your company name, your
location and a valid email address which will be used to deliver the activation key. Additionally the
site ID created during the installation of the Zero Client Licensing Service has to be provided. If you
follow the link during the initial setup, the site ID will be prefilled.
After a few days you will receive an email containing your activation key. You can enter the
activation key on your licensing service webpage (http://name_or_IP_of _ZCLS_appliance/) in
Administration/Activation.

Overview of Service Update Right The licensing service manages the right to update an existing Zero Client Controller. Whether the
update is allowed or not depends on the number of devices managed by the Zero Client Controller
and the amount of time these are/were managed. (See also: The Zero Client Controller Licence
Model)
The current total system update right is graphically represented by a coloured battery.
Update not allowed
A red battery signifies update not allowed, insufficient device years. You will need to purchase
service update licences.
-
10
Update allowed (no reserve)
A yellow battery signifies no surplus of device years. This is usually the case when you have only
the device years included with your Zero Clients and have not purchased any additional device
years.
Update allowed
A green battery signifies sufficient device years for an update. This is the case when you have
purchased additional device years.
-
11
Manage Device Years
Purchase Additional Device Years
The current status of the available update rights is shown on the status page of your ZCLS.
http://ip_or_name_ZCLS/
In case the battery is red, you need to purchase additional device years (licences). The minimum
amount to be purchased refers to the status at this very moment. The required amount will be
displayed, e.g.:
You can purchase additional device years via your FUJITSU partner and/or FUJITSU PC architect.
Registering a licence to your licensing environment
After you purchase additional extensions (device years) you need to activate the extensions for
your site ID. This is also done through the Fujitsu Zero Client licence activation web portal. The
licence received from your order is uploaded and sent back to you by email. The additional licences
are then activated for your site ID.
-
12
Import of new device years into your licensing environment
In the status page of the ZCLS please click on:
Select via the browse button the licence file which you have registered for this site.
Note: A licence file must be used with a single site only. In case you want to distribute the
purchased licences across different sites, please register the original file to one site only and import
it there. Then you can transfer available licences to other sites (See chapter: Transfer device years
below)
-
13
Transfer of device years between sites It is possible to transfer extensions (device-years) between sites. You have to determine the site ID
of the destination first and export from the source site to the defined destination. The export can
then only be imported to this dedicated site. Please make sure to use the correct destination site
ID. You can select the amount of device-years to be exported.
Press export button:
In this dialog you can select the number of device years you want to export for transfer to another
site. Please enter the correct ID of the destination site as well.
Administration Options
Connection to Zero Client Controller
To establish the connection to the Zero Client Maestro (if used) or Zero Client Controller (ZCC) enter
the associated IP address in the IP address field. You can verify the setup by pressing the Test
connection button. A green checkmark indicates correct operation.

Licensing Service Account Data
This dialog configures the local administrative account for the ZCLS appliance. If not yet changed,
the default user name at initial start up is admin with the password 0000.
Database Export
Database export is needed for any replacement of the ZCLS, e.g. for update of the ZCLS. For the
update you have to install the new version first and export the data from the previous installation
for the new site ID following the database export dialog:
Please make sure to enter the correct site ID of the destination site, as this value can be specified
only once. Once exported, the import into the new site must take place within 90 days, otherwise
the export file will be rejected.
Please check the configured IP addresses after an update to ensure consistency.
Activation Information
This dialog shows your activation data:
-
16
Synchronization Settings
The database of the ZCLS service is synchronized with the device database daily at the configured
time.
-
17
Log Entries
For troubleshooting the Logfile tab provides an overview of all events logged by the ZCLS.
Licensing example Initial setup with 50 Zero Client devices, additional purchase of 25 Zero Client devices after 6
months
The initial 50 devices come with 1 year of update rights starting on the first day the device is
attached to the infrastructure. Please note, to update to a new software version all devices must be
within the update right period. This means, without purchasing additional extensions the date on
which you install your first device will determine when your update rights expire. The additional 25
devices in this example will not add to the overall pool as described in the licence model overview.
However, as soon as you purchase an extension for the first 50 Zero Client devices, this extension
will be distributed over the total pool of 75 devices. This insures that you dont have to deal with
multiple expiration dates for the update rights of your Zero Clients.

FAQ Which version am I entitled to use?
As the Zero Client Controller is a perpetual licence you are entitled to use the most recent version
installed during your valid update right period.
How can I access the Zero Client Licensing Service?
Your licensing service appliance will be assigned an IP address on initial start, either from your
DHCP or from your manual input. You can access the licensing service from any browser:
http://ip_of_licensing_service
Where do I find the Fujitsu licensing portal?
The Fujitsu licensing portal can be found at the following address:
http://activationserver.ts.fujitsu.com/ZCLM/licence.aspx
How can I move to a new installation?
In case you have to set up a new environment the first step is to install the Zero Client Controller
including the licensing service in the destination environment. Using the site ID of the new site you
can export your inventory data from your former installation. After import to the destination site,
the licence pool is again available including your inventory data.
How can I move some licences to another installation?
You can export available licences from your previous installation using the site ID of the other
installation. From that point on they will no longer be available in the previous installation.
What happens with devices that are not connected?
All devices shown in the ZCC are considered as valid devices for which an update rights are
required, even if some devices are not connected. Please make sure to remove devices from your
ZCC console when you permanently disconnect them.
