Manchester Mega Mela 2018 3
WELCOME TO ZEE MANCHESTER MEGA MELA 2018Manchester Mega Mela is the largest celebration of South Asian arts and culture in the North of England. Music, dance, food and traditional arts and crafts bring the sights, sounds and spicy aromas of South Asia to South Manchester.
This year’s Mela with its two entertainment stages, arts and crafts marquee, a large fun fair, traditional Asian food, clothes and jewellery stalls, will have something for everyone.
The Main Stage Programme is being hosted and presented jointly by ZEE TV. Some of the biggest names on the UK and International Asian entertainment scene will be performing on both days.
The Chai Serai Marquee, with a chai cafe and seating provisions, gives the mela-goers an opportunity to relax and enjoy a community-led stage programme of folklore, classical and contemporary dance and music. Performances by local school children are an added attraction.
The Arts and Crafts Marquee offers paper craft, paranda, jewellery-making and various media and textile-based workshops, which will appeal to all ages. You can also have free henna and face-painting applied.
This year’s new attractions include Manchester Mega Mela’s commissioned project DESI STREET MELA. As our main stage takes a short break, the festival field will spring into to life with street entertainment, carnival and more. Dance with our stilt walking Elephants or head over to help our ringmasters tame their Bengal Tiger. Be amazed as curiosities, puppets and beasts appear around every corner culminating in a colourful and vibrant carnival performance.
You will be guaranteed to bump into creatures and desi delights of all types, while you shop till you drop at our wide selection of festival stalls and food vendors to recharge your batteries before our final main stage acts of the weekend.
The largest Dhol drum in the world arrives at the Mela. Accompanied by an ensemble of Dhol drummers, this award winning show has been seen by thousands. Be prepared to be amazed as the Dhol drum twists and turns and will surprise audiences young and old.
For sports lovers, the ever popular Kabaddi match and Tug of War will take place on Sunday evening between 6.00 pm to 8.00 pm.
The Mela Management Committee would like to thank our main funders: Arts Council England & Manchester City Council. We would also like to thank Greater Manchester Police , ZEE TV and other sponsors and supporting organisations.
Enjoy the Mela with your family and friends!
