Taking the Pulse of the Developer Community
DEVELOPERS AND THE APP ECONOMY
ZEND DEVELOPER PULSE™
Fourth Quarter 2011
To our readers . . .
Welcome to Zend Developer Pulse™. This new survey series was created to ‘take the pulse’ of developers
who create software, one of the most innovative and fastest-growing industries in the world today.
Our first survey in the series offers fresh insights on emerging technology and career trends for 2012,
captured from more than 3,000 participants. We appreciate their responses and are pleased to share with
you a summary of survey findings in the report that follows.
If you are not already familiar with Zend, we are the leading provider of solutions to build and deploy
business-critical web applications using PHP, which powers more than one-third of the web and
provides foundational technology for such widely-used commercial apps as Drupal, Facebook, Magento,
Wikipedia, WordPress and Zynga. Zend serves a customer base of more than one million developers who
are building enterprise applications at Best Buy, Bell Helicopter, eBay, France Telecom, NYSE Euronext,
United Business Media and other organizations.
Thank you for your time. We welcome your feedback as we begin planning our next survey.

Developers and the App EconomyLingering recession, fierce global competition and the internet’s pervasiveness have created a perfect storm for tech innovation. To compete and win, today’s businesses must be more powerfully and productively engaged with customer, partner, supplier and employee communities, anytime and anywhere. The battle for market leadership is being waged on the web, and in the cloud, driven by mobile and social technologies. We are becoming an app economy, where even the newest software applications have the potential to be downloaded by the billions in the blink of an eye.
The question is: How will we meet the rising demand for a new generation of apps that can fuel real business growth?
Zend addresses this topic in our first Zend Developer Pulse™ survey, conducted in late November 2011, which offers insights on emerging technology and career trends captured from 3,335 respondents including enterprise, SMB and independent software developers from around the globe.
INTRODUCTION
Zend Developer Pulse™ Survey
Key areas of technology investment in 2012 are revealed by both the types of projects that developers expect to tackle, as well as their priorities for career and skills development. In our findings, 66% of all developers surveyed will be engaged in mobile app development projects, while 40-50% expect to work on APIs, cloud projects, social media integration, and big data/analytics.

WHAT IS AN API?
An API—or Application Programming Interface—allows products or services to talk to other products or services. In this way, an API allows you to open up data and functionality to other developers and to other businesses. It is increasingly the way in which companies exchange data and services, both internally and externally.

When asked about career and skills development priorities for 2012, 75% of all developers ranked next-generation UI development as a top priority. In addition, 67% of all developers want to hone their app development skills on mobile platforms, and 46% are looking to gain expertise in cloud development. As one might expect, proficiency in big data/analytics is another top priority, as reported by an average of 44% of all developers working at companies with over 100 employees.
DEVELOPERS HARNESS BIG DATA
At Bell Helicopter, the $3billion world leader in vertical lift aircraft, business intelligence (BI) is a key factor in the company’s drive for operational excellence and competitiveness. To compete for large defense contracts, Bell Helicopter must meet dozens of government requirements for earned value management (EVM) reporting. Project forecasting and reporting during design and manufacture of aircraft involves large volumes of data delivered on demand from systems across the organization. Zend had the opportunity to work with Bell’s IT organization and analytic database software maker Infobright for the development and deployment of Premier, a scalable enterprise reporting application that now delivers vital BI from more than 40 data sources in a high availability multi-server environment. Premier is strategic to the company’s EVM certification and eligibility to pursue large-scale government contracts worth tens of millions of dollars, and their developers were instrumental in making this a reality.

The software development industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace, with enterprise-wide cloud development practices becoming increasingly attractive to IT organizations. Software-driven enterprises see the cloud as a means to improve collaboration and productivity, and accelerate time to market with quality software applications. This trend is evident in survey responses regarding developers’ intentions to use public clouds for app development and deployment projects in 2012. More than 60% intend to use public clouds, with 54% already specifying a public cloud of choice. Amazon Web Services was the dominant public cloud with 30%.

The survey further revealed that 46% of all developers are looking to build cloud skills, with a high desire to gain expertise among 52% of developers in large enterprises.
These results are consistent with what Zend is seeing at phpcloud.com, a new cloud community launched in late October 2011 to provide developers with cloud solutions including Zend Developer Cloud, a cloud development sandbox. A November 2011 poll of the phpcloud.com community revealed that 26% of respondents were already actively developing apps within the Zend Developer Cloud sandbox, with 55% reporting that they were actively engaged at various stages with the technology.

According to Zend CEO Andi Gutmans, “In recent years we’ve assisted enterprise customers in scaling agile processes across their IT organizations, and now cloud development is moving similarly from smaller projects to more strategic initiatives that involve software development and deployment directly in the cloud. Zend is offering a different approach to development for the cloud, on the cloud, and working with ecosystem partners so customers can deploy to a variety of clouds.”

STATE OF LANGUAGES
Enterprise Adoption of PHPAs organizations continue to embrace the web and open-source technologies, pushing for greater productivity and cost-efficiency, PHP is becoming more pervasive. PHP is open source, purpose-built for web application development, and its ease of learning and use make it an attractive choice for IT organizations under pressure to do more with less while turning out new applications faster.
When asked what percentage of their time is spent working with PHP, more than 50% of enterprise developers and more than 65% of SMB developers surveyed report spending more than half of their time working in PHP.
An important factor fueling this demand is PHP’s role as a foundational technology in some of the world’s most widely-used web applications, including the Magento eCommerce platform, SugarCRM, and the WordPress and Drupal content management systems.
For example, Zend works with enterprise customers who use PHP-based Magento, the world’s fastest-growing e-commerce software platform. The Zend Developer Pulse™ survey reflects an important trend among these customers and other enterprises worldwide. Namely that many IT organizations who are engaged in cloud projects, are focused on e-commerce and its demands for a quick, seamless response to rapid and sometimes massive fluctations in e-store traffic. Together, Zend and Magento leverage the power of PHP and help customers establish simple and efficient operation of e-stores in the cloud.

PHP FUELS MAINSTREAM APPS
According to Dries Buytaert, Drupal founder and CTO of Acquia, “We see an increasingly symbiotic relationship between PHP and the most popular applications built on PHP such as Drupal. Growing momentum of the language feeds the momentum of applications, and vice versa. That fact that PHP is a powerful, flexible yet accessible programming language has enabled us to build a large and prolific community of contributors around Drupal.”

Forrester sees strong use of open source languages

The Rise of Polyglot ProgrammersDevelopers using PHP report using 1-2 additional languages on a regular basis, with Java, Javascript and various flavors of C dominating the results. As high as 33% of enterprise developers surveyed use both PHP and Java.
These findings align with survey research from Forrester which shows that management has caught on to and grown increasingly comfortable with the fact that developers increasingly use open source to run key parts of their IT infrastructure. According to Forrester’s research, 57% of application development and program professionals and 55% of software decision-makers reported that open source programming languages such as PHP, Ruby, Python and Java are used by their organizations.*
