Zendaya Maree Stoermer Coleman was born

September 1, 1996. Zendaya, which means “to give thanks” in Shona (a Bantu language native to the Shona people of Zimbabwe), was born in Oakland, California. She is a actress and singer and also comes from a theatrical background. As the daughter of a stage manager, she spent much of her youth hanging around the California Shakespeare Theater. She also trained in the theater’s youth program and appeared in some of its productions. During her days as a student at the Oakland School for the Arts, Zendaya landed a number of roles in local theatrical productions.

She also honed her craft at the American Conservatory Theater and the Cal Shakes Conservatory. Zendaya had an interest in dance as well. She was a member of the Future Shock Oakland dance group for several years, and studied hula dancing at the Academy of Hawaiian Arts. In addition to her theatrical work, Zendaya had some early success as a model, working for companies such as Macy’s and Old

Navy. For a Sears commercial, Zendaya performed as a back-up dancer for Selena Gomez. Zendaya is also not afraid to show the world who she is and where she comes from.

“For me, I get a mixture of all the

worlds...” “I have my African first name, I have a middle name that is (my mom’s)

middle name, which is French, but we did it

African spelling, so it’s literally me in a name.

And then you have Stoermer, and then

you have Coleman. I literally have, like, a timeline in history in

my name.”

music and I’m kind of creating my own zone, my own lane as an artist. I want to do rhyth-mic pop, it’s not necessarily your average pop song. It has some kind of urban edge, some kind of more hip-hop-ish tones to it that kind of edge it up and do something a little different so it’s not just your stereotypical pop mu-sic.” -Zendaya talking about the album’s musical style.

Artistry Zendaya’s self-titled debut album musically experiment with pop and R&B genres, as well as touching upon Electropop. The album’s lyrical content tackles issues of love and heartbreak. After streaming the album to radio presenter Ryan Seacrest, he commented on the album’s music calling is a “pop/R&B hybrid offering for the most part”, he continued to comment saying the album contained “urban cuts”.Zendaya has cited Michael Jackson, Aaliyah and Beyoncé as her biggest musical influences. An interview to Jon Ali, she commented: “I love Beyoncé, I think she is one of the best performers out there. She works her butt off and always delivers with everything that she does. It’s a beautiful thing”While most girls her age are flipping through teen magazines for prom inspiration and tips on college applications, Zendaya is sitting in the front row at fashion weeks and appearing on the

covers of those very same teen magazines .As she fast approaches the cusp of adulthood, it's inevitable that her relationship with Disney and its preteen viewers will change. Zendaya plans on sticking with the company that gave her a start. Everyone has their own version of their career that they want to create and things they want to do

and accomplish. For me, I obviously want to

continue to stay in the Disney world and grow at the same time.” So far, growing within Disney means

taking on more responsibility:

For the upcoming K.C. Undercover show,

Zendaya will star as well as co-produce. “Now I’m able to really have a vision,” she says, leaning forward with noticeable excitement. “I can say what I want and be assertive. I can have a really, really strong voice and presence on my own show and be listened to. That’s the coolest part. I have more control; I have more freedom to make something that I’m proud of.”
