Banking volume and value declines for second consecutive month

There were 122 mergers and acquisitions (M&A) deals worth a combined USD 8,384 million targeting banking companies announced during February, marking the second consecutive monthly decrease (January 2016: 148 deals worth USD 10,536 million; December 2015: 201 deals worth USD 77,563 million).

A similar result was seen year-on-year as volume fell 15 per cent against a 40 per cent decline in value as 143 deals worth a combined USD 14,070 million were announced in February 2015.

China secured the most investment in February notching up USD 4,070 million during the month, followed by Indonesia with USD 1,053 million, which was solely attributable to one transaction involving Bank Permata conducting a rights issue.

Strategic M&A down month-on-month

In line with the overall trend for the banking industry, the value of strategic M&A deals announced in February declined 30 per cent, as volume decreased at a slower rate of 19 per cent in the four weeks under review. There were 87 deals worth USD 5,653 million announced during the month, compared to 107 deals worth USD 8,049 million in January 2016.

On a 12 month comparison volume fared slightly better, increasing from 82 deals in February 2015, while value took a hit against the USD 8,593 million recorded during the same time last year.

The largest strategic M&A deal of the month was China Life Insurance increasing its stake in China Guangfa Bank from 20 per cent to 44 per cent for USD 3,560 million. This deal was seven times larger than the second biggest transaction, which also targeted a Chinese company.

Having been targeted in the top two deals for the month it is unsurprising that China was the most valuable country in terms of strategic M&A with investment worth a total of USD 4,070 million, well ahead of second placed South Korea with USD 360 million.

Capital markets up by value in February

The value of capital markets banking transactions increased in February, against a decline in volume. There were 19 deals worth a combined USD 2,604 million, compared to 23 deals worth USD 2,303 million in January 2016, while year-on-year volume and value declined (February 2015: 40 deals worth USD 5,240 million).

The increase month-on-month can be attributed to a single transaction as only one deal exceeded USD 1,000 million during the four weeks; February’s largest capital markets deal was worth USD 1,053 million and involved Indonesia’s Bank Permata selling a 64 per cent stake in a capital increase. This deal was worth double the number two deal which involved Switzerland’s EFG International raising USD 505 million in a rights issue.

February’s largest transaction had a significant impact on the countries table as Indonesia was the most valuable country in February, despite only being targeted in one deal. Switzerland followed with USD 560 million, with Portugal slightly behind with USD 327 million.

Financial sponsors keeps in line with overall trend

Following February’s overall pattern, banking deals involving financial sponsors declined on all fronts as 16 deals worth a combined USD 127 million were announced during the four weeks under review (January 2016: 18 deals worth USD 184 million; February 2015: 21 deals worth USD 238 million).

The decline can be attributed to the lack of high value transactions The largest announced deal during the month was Nextbank Capital raising just over USD 30 million in a round of funding, level with Country Bancshares which also raised USD 30 million in financing.

The US was the only country to receive investment during February accounting for the entire 16 deals worth a combined USD 127 million, representing a month-on-month increase by volume and value of 14 per cent and 11 per cent on 14 deals worth USD 114 million in January 2016.
