19/24.8. ZINAL 2012 Switzerland www.euycongress.org YOGA & AYURVEDA 39th International Congress Ayurveda, the science of life, has grown to include a con- siderable share of new therapies and is as well established in Europe, as in its time Yoga, the art of living in the Union, has managed to settle there. In the founding texts of Ayurveda, including the Caraka Samhita, that Yoga regularly cites, we talk at length of meditation as a therapeutic method, and it is regularly used along the purifications and breathing exercises in daily practice. Dietetics is an essential part of Ayurvedic therapy, although it differs somewhat from the specific yogic food, but it can be said that the need for adequate healthy food remains one of their similarities. Our lecturers will endeavour to place the spiritual and philo- sophical dimension of Ayurveda in our time that would ra- ther confine its therapeutic efficacy, and we must continue to affirm the values of the curative and preventive practice of Yoga, which is often presented as spiritual. For the general public, Ayurveda is known today as a method of massage oil or a deliciously spicy Indian food, but these are isolated aspects of a vast body therapy still unknown in the West. Indian traditional medicine has as many aspects and disci- plines as Western conventional medicine. SWAMI YOG-ANAND BHARATI Guest of Honor MP+W+L // FR, EN Sanyasin, yogi and vaidya (ayurvedic physician). He was born in a business environment, in a very spiritual Indian family. After high studies, as well in modern sciences as an- cient philosophy, he renounced to familial life and entered in a sanyasin order. He started the main duty of his life: “to teach and spread the ancient knowledge and his philosophy all over the world in the way of insuring a human, healthy and happy life”. He has been settling in France since 1982 and is living half a year in Varanasi. He was the first to introduce ayurvedic massage in France. THE DAILY PROGRAM is rich and varied, consisting of 10 hours a day. Before breakfast, you can participate in a morning yoga practice in 12 rooms. During the day, you can follow in-service training (at least one in each represented language). You find also lectures, cooking lessons, yoga workshops and Kalarippayat practices. Before the evening meal, you are invited to do a chanting or yoga workshop or musical salon. To finish with, interac- tive, cultural and musical programmes will be on offer in a friendly atmosphere with the different fédérations mem- bers of EUY.
