BOARSHEAD 2018 – The Boarshead will take a break this year, but already a dedicated group is planning for 2018. 2018 is also Zion’s 125th anniversary. How fitting to bring it back! Needed are two important people – Boarshead Director who oversees all the elements of the script including participants, acting, lighting, etc. Also needed is a Music Director who oversees everything having to do with the music and choir. Please consider this or direct us to the right people for these jobs.

PHOTO DIRECTORY – Finding it hard to get to know people? Why not create a photo directory? This project can use existing companies who

specialize in this area or can be done in house. Whatever the case, we will need one person with drive and vision for this and a crew of workers behind him/her in carrying it out. ______________________________ -Planter

TLC (Tender Loving Care) TEAM – We need someone who will identify those church members who are on active duty in the military, who are college students, and those who are shut-in. He/she will form a team to put together care packages and send them out with our love.

COURTYARD UPGRADE – We have a beautiful little area just off our lobby. This could be developed and improved. We need someone with

ideas on how to do this. He/she will need to evaluate the needs and uses of this area, come up with a list of ideas, run them by the Board of Trustees for approval, and then put together a team to make those improvements. ________________-Planter

CARMODY FIELD DEVELOPMENT – Zion recently purchased a tract of land next to the parking lot and in back of the Carmody house. Right now it stands vacant. We need someone to lead a task force to study the potential uses of this land. Some that have been suggested include: pavilion, stage area, outside worship area, fire pit, community garden, sand volleyball, etc. This task force will then share their ideas with council and congregation for approval. Then the work can be done to make this a useable space. ___________________________-Planter CLEAN-UP DAY COORDINATOR – We need someone to initiate a congregational clean-up day covering both the inside and outside area. We can make this a morning project with everyone involved. A fellowship lunch could finish it off. Let’s come together and give assistance to our hard-working paid staff and trustees. In cooperation with the trustees, we need someone who will set the date, gather a painting crew, and get the job done? ZION COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT - Zion members have approved a vegetable community garden! The garden will need the following leaders:

Garden Manager-someone who will plan garden layout, collaborate with existing community gardens, take calls/emails from those interested in helping or having plots.

..BUILDING AND SANCTUARY..

BUILDING LIGHTING – Working with a knowledgeable electrician, our lighting needs to be evaluated and improved if needed. This would include the backlight on the central window and landscape lighting. We need someone with an eye for this and good plan to make our church visible and pleasing to the eye.

(2017/2018)_____________________-Planter PRAISE HALL LIGHTING – Working with a knowledgeable electrician, the praise hall lighting needs to be assessed and improved if needed. This would include the 500w spots, lectern light, and uplight beams. We need someone who is not afraid of heights and has knowledge of lighting to upgrade our present lighting in the praise hall. Is it you? __________________________________-Planter PRAISE HALL CAMERA – A camera is needed in the praise hall so that services can be broadcast in the lobby. Working with trustee feedback, we need someone to assess the situation and find the best solution for this. __________________________________-Planter BELL TABLES – The bell choir is back, and we are enjoying their playing. Unfortunately, set up in the transept is tedious and potentially dangerous since it blocks an aisle. We need a table that can be designed for easy set-up and for efficient use of space in the church. Someone needs to work with the bell choir on this and come up with an idea that would work. Who will help our bells ring with even greater joy? ____________-Planter PROCESSIONAL CROSS MOUNT – Our processional cross mount needs repair or replacement. PEW MAINTENANCE – We have some beautiful pews that require periodic cleaning and maintenance. There is polishing to be done. Also, the pew cushions could use some cleaning. We need someone to assemble a team to get this done. Could it be you?

With a little reorganization, these books and resources will be more accessible. Some books need mending too. Who has a heart for fixing up the library? We need someone to assemble a team and get it done.

(2017/2018) Maria Nelson –Planter UPGRADE PIANO – Someone has suggested the need for a piano downstairs and to look at the ones we have. We need someone to assess the situation and identify the need. If a need is there, a piano needs to be selected, funding acquired, and the piano eventually purchased. LOBBY MONITOR – An informational TV monitor is needed in the lobby. This will provide important information to the congregation. We need someone to assess the situation and come up with a plan to make this happen. All ideas will need to be presented to the Trustees for approval and completion. NURSERY ASSESSMENT – We need someone to evaluate the use and needs of the nursery. Sometimes we forget a place like this exists. Our parents with small children need this place from time to time. What can be done to make it a welcoming place? What kind of cleaning and improvement is needed? Is there a way to make it more assessable to parents. We need someone with a heart for children to answer these questions and form a team to address them. They will need to bring their ideas to the trustees for discussion.

BUS CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE – We have a great people mover in our little bus. The youth have used it. It is great visibility for our church when it is driven. We need someone to keep an eye on the bus and provide regular cleaning and maintenance so that

it can be used more often. Our active youth group will benefit from this effort. Who will give a little TLC for our bus?

HAYES STREET MINISTRY CENTER WORK – What a blessing to have this place! If you haven’t seen it, ask someone for a tour. This place is used for women and men’s ministry and some meetings. There is much potential still. Work that needs attention is general cleaning and maintenance, improvement of the rear walk connecting the house to the school building, removing the old fence, development of an office space on the NE corner, paved access to the front of the house, siding, air conditioning unit for upstairs, and more. We need someone not necessarily to do all the work, but rather someone who has vision for this special place and the heart to find the right people to get the work done. Naturally, the trustees would be a great place to start.

(2017/2018) __________________________________-Planter FURNISHING & EQUIPMENT INVENTORY - We need to inventory our furnishings and equipment so each can be used effectively and often. Inventories also help in identifying the need to replace, repair, or upgrade. We need a detail person here who will get this started.

(2017/2018)_______________________-Planter MONITOR EVALUATION AND UPGRADE – We need someone to take a good look at our monitor system. These include the monitors in the band room, basement hall, youth, and nursery. Some new cables may need to be installed to get these monitors working again. We need someone who has some expertise in this area and is able to correctly identify the areas that need repair and improvement and has the experience to fix them or find someone who can. He/she needs to coordinate their efforts with the Trustees.

BETHLEHEM VILLAGE DISPLAY – Over the years, Doris Weaver has collected an amazing village of figurines depicting scenes in Bethlehem. This is an extremely rare and valuable collection that needs a home somewhere in our building so that all can enjoy it. It shouldn’t be shut up in boxes. We need someone to evaluate our space downstairs and come up with a place where this can be permanently displayed. Utilization of Hayes Street Ministry Center is a key component to making this happen. We need a person that can work with multiple groups and people to coordinate efforts to find a permanent place for the Bethlehem Village.

This bulletin board serves to inform the congregation of the missionary we are supporting. Work could include other bulletin boards as needed. Coffee hour is an enjoyable time to connect with members and visitors between services on Sunday. The host does the following: 1. before early service make coffee, set out needed supplies and plate the baked goods 2. before the service ends pour cold drinks and finish set up 3. serve coffee during coffee hour 4. clean up after coffee hour Training will be provided and help is available as needed. BUILDING - SCHOOL

EASY ACCESS – This is a simple project, but one that is very important. We need the access button for the school and church to be labeled. We need to make it easier for our visitors to get to us especially when the doors are locked and access is made by using the access button. All ideas should be directed to the trustees for completion.

SIGNAGE – When visitors come to our building, do they know which door to use? What identifies the school and church entrances? Do visitors even know we have a school here? We need to upgrade our signage so that people entering from Jackson St. and Mentor Ave. will know where to go. Much discussion has already

occurred in this matter. It would be good to learn what has been discussed at the Trustee level so that a plan that meets the needs of all can be determined and completed.

OUTREACH – NATIONAL AND WORLD

MISSIONARY CORRESPONDER – We need someone who will keep track of our missionaries and send them letters, cards, and news from our congregation so that they will be encouraged in their ministry. The need is great and the connection is vital as we share in their ministry by supporting them. If you are good at remembering birthdays and anniversaries, you would be perfect for the job. MISSION TRIP – There are places in the world that we can go and make a difference. We need someone who has a vision for missions overseas and would be willing to put together a trip. The first step would be to determine interest in this. Next, our own LCMS website has ideas on where to serve. Using this

information, costs and needs can be determined to see if such an idea could be done. There is much potential in this area. The person who takes charge of this project would work with one of the pastors and then get approval from the Board of Elders.

Working with college chaplains is important too. The resources and people are there to support our college students. If you are willing to take a week off, travel, and serve in many varied conditions and situations, you are right for this project. This trip can be coordinated with a youth servant trip as well. We need someone to explore the possibilities, propose a trip, and recruit others to join them. CHURCH PICNIC OUTREACH – We need some to work with the Christian Life Board in finding ways to invite and include our neighbors in our church picnic. We need to be intentional in finding and ministering to

BIBLE STUDY – We need someone to develop two new Bible studies during the next year. Time would be spent determining areas and people who are not being fed by our current studies. Once interest is determined, study leaders can be assigned and a new Bible study is born. The person coming up with ideas would work with one of the pastors.

Planted(2016/2017)-Joe Palinkas helped start a new Young Adult Bible Study that currently meets on Tuesday nights at the Hayes House starting at 7:30 p.m./Also a new member study was held during the summer.

We need someone to find hosts for a small group. Once interest is determined, study leaders can be assigned and a new small group study is born. MARRIAGE MINISTRY – Someone suggested a need for marriage enrichment and Bible study. We need someone to identify if there is interest in this area and what can be done for couples. Lots of resources are available. It is just the task of finding interested couples, finding a place and topic, and meeting. Who has a vision for this area? MEN’S MINISTRY COORDINATOR – We have a men’s ministry now. It meets monthly on the fourth Thursday of each month at the Hayes House at 6:00 p.m.. We need someone to coordinate food and activities so that it remains an efficient and healthy group. The person who will take on leadership in this would best be one who is part of the group already. They need to have a heart for the men of the congregation, often a neglected group in churches today. (2017/2018)__________________________________-Planter

FUTURE VICAR? Zion offers an unique blend of ministries and ages which would be a great fit for hosting a vicar for a

year. We need someone who will be willing to study the feasibility of taking on a vicar and if there is interest among the pastors. If this is a real possibility, we need someone to begin the application process and make it happen with

elder and congregation support. (2017/2018)__________________________________-Planter FUTURE DIRECTOR OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION INTERN – Zion offers a unique blend of ministries and ages which would be a great fit for hosting a DCE for a year. We need someone who will be willing to study the feasibility of taking on a DCE and if there is interest in our youth and education programs. If this is a real possibility, we need someone to begin the application process and make it happen with elder and congregation support.

He/she would be in charge of gathering special records, photos, recordings, videos, and any other of preserving information. visitors all the time. We want to welcome them and invite them back. We need someone to follow-up with each visitor with letters, cards, or e-mails, thanking them for attending our church. We use the information given on the Friendship register. Let’s find ways to keep our visitors coming back and hopefully joining our church. We need a positive and outgoing person to take charge and assemble a committee to assist.

In 2017, we are celebrating the 500th year of the Reformation. In 2018, we will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of our church. (2017/2018)__________________________________-Planter CHURCH PHOTOGRAPHER – This person will coordinate their efforts with the Photo Directory person and the Archivist. Basically, if you love taking pictures, this job is for you. Since we don’t have an official church camera, you would use your own. Photos then can be downloaded for use in our publications and website. Let’s get Zion’s story out there in pictures.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING – Our Sunday School is a vital ministry in our church. We have lots of children around who need good teachers. We need someone who can find these teachers and help them to become part of our Sunday School. We also need training times set-up so that our pastors can help train them to be effective and knowledgeable in their areas. If you have a heart for children, this is a good spot for you!

(2016/2017) – A Sunday School Superintendent was appointed and teachers are meeting quarterly. Development of this idea is underway. (2017/2018)__________________________________-Planter PARISH NURSE – We need someone who has nursing experience who can help our congregation stay healthy. He/she can arrange for blood pressure screenings, health topics in the newsletter, and help develop other preventative programs. This is purely a volunteer position which is not intended to replace your doctor. Is there someone who can help us be health conscious? This is for you. WORSHIP

DISCIPLESHIP PROGRAM – Someone has suggested we need a discipleship program. We need a person to learn what this means and how it would benefit our church. Ideas on this program need to be communicated to the Elders. __________________________________-Planter USHERING – What a joy to serve the Lord! You have another opportunity in ushering for the Sunday-9:00 service. This ministry is

open to any confirmed or soon to be confirmed member, male or female. The main duties include handing out bulletins, collecting the offering, and ushering during communion. We have nearly twenty already who are willing to serve, but more ushers are needed. Why not try this sometime. No experience needed just a willingness to serve.

We need someone who will recruit youth (sixth grade thru high school) for this service. He/she would also be responsible for scheduling and training. We have the young people. GREETERS – Besides ushers, greeters are another key contact for new people. We need someone to recruit, schedule, and carry-out an active greeter program by determining the key entry points and someone who can be there to welcome and assist. Let’s provide all our new members a sponsor who can help them in their transition into our church. This begins in prayer and ends in just being there for them to show them how our church works. We need someone to recruit sponsors and match them up with our new members. Perhaps then those first six months will be the start of a lifetime of active membership. WE CARE GROUP – We need someone who will receive the names of people who haven’t been recently attending and come up with a plan to reach them through cards, phone calls, or other communications. A group will be needed to support you so recruitment of others will be

necessary to spread the work around. We don’t want to lose anyone. Let’s keep everyone connected. Let all our members know that if they miss three months, someone will notice. Who will take charge of this special group?

We need more individuals or teams willing set up communion and clean up after the service. Each would work beside Nancy Wentling who coordinates

this ministry. Let’s expand this already active ministry even more. (2017/2018)__________________________________-Planters DRAMA MINISTRY – Drama has been used successfully in our church. Perhaps there are more ways to use this in the future. We need someone who loves drama and has an eye for putting together Christ centered programs. He/she also needs to be able to recruit participants and manage practices. Is there a future for this group? Someone needs to step forward in determining the future of this ministry.

If so, you would be the perfect person to help in recording our services and uploading them on various media platforms. We have one person already involved in this, but your help may help us take this form of outreach to another level. __________________________________-Planter WEDDING COORDINATOR – We need someone to see if there is a need for a wedding coordinator in our church. The person for this position will need to study job descriptions of wedding coordinators in other churches and then determine what the job would look like here. This person will have to work closely with the pastors to determine if there is a need. (2017/2018)__________________________________-Planter DECORATIONS – Our church is beautifully decorated because we have some who give up their time to make it happen. It would be good to have someone who would oversee it all and coordinate decorations with the special services and events held during the year. Key times are Christmas, Easter, and Boar’s Head. This person would also assist the secretary with scheduling the altar flowers.
