GOD'S PROMISES TO ISRAEL By: Apostle Marvin E. Ely
God's great promises to Israel came about because of a faithful man named Abraham. He was willing to leave his own
land in which he had security and riches and go another land that the Lord would show him. He
was seventy five years old when he departed out Haran.
thy country, and thy father's house, unto a land that I
will shew thee: And I a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name
and thou shalt And I will bless curse that
was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art ward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed forever. And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered." Genesis 13: 14-16.
"And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be. And he believed in Lord; and he counted it to him for righteousness. And he said unto him, I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it." Genesis 15:5-7.
"Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Know therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith; preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham." Galatians 3
Lord appeared unto Isaac and to "Sojourn in this land, and I will be with and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I n-r· -.~m the oath which I swear unto

remarkable blessings that were ever promised to a people. "And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt harken diligently unto the voice the Lord thy
God, to observe and do all his commandments
which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy will set thee on high all nations of the
earth. And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the
voice of the Lord thy God." Deut. 28:1-2. These
blessings included being blessed in their cities and their fields, the fruit of their bodies and the
fruit of the ground, the fruit of their cattle, the
increase of their kind and their sheep. They were
also to be blessed in their basket and store. (See
Deut. 28:3-6). "If walk in and keep my
commandments, and do them; Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield
her increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit. And your threshing shall reach unto
the vintage, and the vintage shall reach unto the
sowing time: and ye shall eat your bread to the
full, and dwell in your land safely. And I will
give peace in the land, and ye shall lie down, and
none shall make you afraid: and I will rid evil beasts out of the land, neither shall the sword go through your land ... And five of you shall chase
an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall
before you by the sword." Lev. 26:3-8. These
remarkable blessings were held out to Israel if they would keep the commandments.
The Lord also promised to establish Israel as
a holy people unto himself if they would keep commandments of the Lord their God and
ways. people the earth
shall see that thou art called by the name of the
Lord; and they shall be afraid of thee." Deut.
28: 10. "The Lord shall open unto thee his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain unto thy land in his season, and to bless all the work of thy
hand: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, and
thou shalt not borrow." Deut. 28: 12. The rain in his season would mean that when it was planting time there would be no rain but when it was growing time there would be rain. In the time of
the harvest the rain would not interfere with the harvesting. What a wonderful condition this
would be.
If the house oflsrael failed to keep the Lord's
commandments and served other gods they
would be cursed instead of blessed. They would
be cursed in their bodies, in their flocks and kind and when they came in or went out. Also if they did not keep the Lord's commandments the
of their land would be powder and dust. The Lord would make pestilence to cleave unto them. AU
these cursings are far different than the blessings that could have been received by the house
Israel. (Deut. 28: 15-24). We know the story, the house of Israel did
not keep the commandments of the Lord but
instead served other gods. The following state
ments became a reality: "The Lord shall bring
thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers
have known; and there shalt thou serve
gods, wood and stone. And thou shalt became an
astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among
all nations whither the Lord shall lead thee."
Deut. 28:36-37.
77
"And the Lord shall scatter thee among people, from the one end of the earth even unto
and shalt serve
which neither thou nor thy fathers have known,
even wood and stone. And among these nations
shalt thou find no ease, neither shall
thy foot have rest: but the Lord shall
there a trembling heart, and failing
sorrow of mind:" Deut. 28:64-65.

Lillian Marie Brown Our dear sister was born August 31, 1898 in
Newark, NJ. the daughter of William and Katherine Cunningham. Much of Lillian's childhood was spent in an orphanage. In her teenage years she was taken in by a kindly family and in return
for child care she was sent to nursing school. And so Lillian became a nurse. Her compassionate
nature and this new skill allowed her to mend the
body and the heart. Lillian married in 1919 and
from this union had five children. Raising her family as a single parent she worked long and hard. Times were hard, especially for a divorced
mother of five. But, as was her nature, this was a
labor of love and her burdens were burdens of joy. Living now in Houston, Mo. _Lillian found
the Church of Christ. The Saints there nurturing
and being nurtured by this new sister in Christ
who was baptized May 17, 193 1. Lillian is preceded in death by a son, Clyde
I. Brown, July 10, 1964 and a daughter, Helen E.
Brown, July 29, 1990. She is survived by a son, Norman E. Brown of Raytown, Mo. and two
daughters, Mary L. Cuffie of Kansas City, Mo.
and Velma I. Barger of Lake Orion, Mich., 14
grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 3 great
great grandchildren. For many years Lillian lived in Gladbrook,
Iowa before moving to Raytown, Mo. Her family
is a reflection of her love and compassion in
taking care of her every need and care. This
devotion is rare in this day and time. ""-' .. ," ........

missed by all who knew her. Yet, we know that she now resides with our Master in the paradise of God and that one day we will surely see her again, in glory.
Lillian reminised one day about a time when an infant had grown cold and stiff and the Doctor
not knowing what to do. Lillian was called in to help. She placed the child in a warmed oven.
Soon his color returned and he was well again. That baby was at her side at her funeral. Now a grown man. What a marvelous testimony of her heart that warms even the soul.
Lillian was laid to rest March 19, 1996 at 10am. at the Mt. Washington Cemetery in Independence, Mo. Elders Charles and Andrew Brantner officiating with beautiful soul reaching
hymns sung by Sister Neva Housnecht. From this meek and humble lady flowed
great love and compassion for all. She touched the hearts of all who knew her with a kind and sincere spirit.
To have known you is to love you and is a gift from God, Farewell sweet Lillian, till we meet again.
