Content My learning experience with Zong Telecommunication Company began with my joining from

1st July, 2012 to 15th August, 2012.

My internship report contains all the information about my work experience with Zong, which

was lunged in 2008 by China Mobile (CMPAK). It is the first International brand of China

Mobile being launched in Pakistan. It is meant to empower and liberate the people of Pakistan in

every nook and corner of the country. It will become a part of their hearts, their minds and bring

about a change in their lives that everyone desired but few thought would be possible. The core

essence of ZONG is to allow people to communicate at will without worrying about tariffs,

network coverage, capacity issues or congestion. Working with such a enthusiastic company will

be one of my best skill that would remain with me and help me in the coming life which offer

many challenges. I would like to highlight this, that my experience with Zong

telecommunication Company was very memorable and full of learning.

Executive Summary The purpose of this report is to explain what I did and learned during my internship period with

Zong Telecommunication Company. The report focuses mainly on the assignments handled,

working environment, shortcoming and successes that the intern did meet when handling various

tasks assigned to him by the supervisor.

Because the various parts of the report reflect the intern’s shortcoming, successes and

observations it would be vital that the recommendations are also given. Therefore the report

gives a number of comments and recommendations on the internship program.

My report covers the practical experience & exposure that I gained at Zong Telecommunication

Company. If there is any error or mistake in report that mislead you to another way of meaning, I

am responsible for those mistakes. At the end, I can say that there remains a gap between

university studies and practical life.

I have tried my best to keep report simple yet theoratical correct. I hope I suceed in my attempt.

Start Date for Internship: 1st July, 2012

Introduction: In the last semester of my BBA (hons) I have to do a course (internship) for which I was

registered. Searching on the internet and through references I found an internship in Zong

Telecom Company, Islamabad. The title of the job was internship. It was convenient for me to do

that internship because of my reference. On the basis of my personal reference I went for that

opportunity and interviewed by Manager. I did well in the interview therefore they offered me an

internship in their organization. As an intern in Zong, I was working in the Finance department

with Tariq, who is in charge for running the organization data. Finance Department of Zong

Telecom is responsible for all financial in and outgoing transactions. This department includes

sub departments such as; Internal control and operations, auditing, payable department etc. Zong

offer wide range of services for their users such as; prepaid, postpaid, Value added services,

internet, online money banking and much more. Their clients are EBay, PayPal, Manchester

united, Huawei, NUST, Adamjee insurance company etc.

I have also introduced to the employees and manager of the organization which are working

deliberately to make this organization a well structured and well presumed in the market. They

have 5 floors building as their head office in Islamabad, where they have well established

different departments on different floors along with cafeteria on the top. I found it really

interesting as it was my first experience in the corporate world.

They also have other departments such as; Information Technology, Customer service,

Marketing, Corporate sales, procurement, Human Resource, Engineering, Project Management

Office etc.

Duties and responsibilities: I started my internship program from 1

st July, 2012 to 15th August, 2012. In these 40 days of

professional running environment, I have erudite and achieve a lot.

The job that was assigned to me was in Payable Department of Finance and my key task was to

check and verify the invoices. Before involving me in some official assignments, they first

wanted to me study their organization in following manners:

Understand and recognize the organization core values.

Study the entire payable process and their system.

How to eliminate the errors.

These duties were completed effectively and results were according to expectations. Their main

purpose was to test my knowledge for mathematics and skills on computer.

Work experience: I was quite unsure about, if I can make it or not because of no experience of corporate world

before and also because of ghastly image about corporate environment which made me somewhat

edgy. I was vague about my tasks and duties. I wasn’t indicated exactly what I suppose to do.

But through my supervisor and manager help I was able to understand and I initiated my work.

Being a part-time employee in different professions I found it rather difficult to work with or

under someone supervision without getting paid. But as it was my first experience in a real

corporate work and as an internee I found many things that motivated me to work, learn and

enjoy, things such as; Working as team with the rest of the employees and other internees was

something that I truly treasured, I found it more pleasant and simple to deal with my work.

Working on assignments and tasks that I believed would ultimately provide a clear understanding

on the major task. This gave me the morale to work even harder in order to meet deadlines.

I have learned and gained a lot with the help of direction of Mr. Tariq. During my Internship I

have observed that the notions which I have learned in class are difficult to adapt them in a

practical and professional world. I have learned to be diplomatic, smart enough, rational to cope

professional situations in such a way that make your work easier and let you sustain in the

environment. I have also learned that university study is different in a practical life of Pakistani

professional culture.

Eventually, this is the world where every student has to go and work finally, so one should be

polite, sharp and hardworking during his/ her work, that’s how you can have a good and reputed

name in your career. Overall my experience was good except the exhaustion of gathering data

from one department to another, rushing for things like photocopies etc. I really liked working in

the professional environment and made new contacts for future benefits.

The Impact of My Work: My task is to check the invoices and keep verify all the required documents for acceptance. Being

vigorous and puntual my contribution to zong might helped them to be proactive and also by

sharing their somewhat burdens might helped them to feel relaxed.

Successes: For me it was a success to be a part of multinational company and work with such outstanding

and diligent employees in enthusiastic work environment. My supervisor was happy with my

assignments and hard work and by the end of my internship they had my great impression.

On the daily bases I was given a particular number of invoices that I have to verify and enter into

their system (Sub system) and I was always performed it on time which lead me to another

success, that was at the time of my leave, My supervisor wanted me to apply for the job as she

wanted me to be the part of their company.

Short Comings: There were not many short comings as I was supported by many people there but as I was an

intern, I had to perform every work given to me even though I like it or not and which were not

even part of my learning; like photocopies, shifting files from one place to another, gathering files

or data from one place to another. It was kind of fatigue for me to collect it. It was a hectic job

because no one helps you as long as your internee in any organization.

Internship as a Learning Process: While the work I performed during this period was particularly enchanting and equally thrilling, I

feel that this internship period bare me to experiences the communication, managing and

performing the task in the organization. The learning in the private organization is far more better

then government organization, in that case it refined my professional skills, amplified confidence

and aptitude to work in a team and effectively communicate with in the team.

And especially company like Zong, where there are many foreigner employees, this made me

interact with them and enhance my communication skill with different people.

Hr relating to Payable Department (Finance): Something I came to know about Zong which literally made me astonished. Few months ago,

when I went there for internship in HR department (As I am HR major student) I was shocked to

know that they do not have separate department for HR except few employees sitting at some

corner and doing their jobs and they do not take any internees in HR. I wanted to avail

Page 9: Zong Internship Report

Zong Telecommunication

opportunity for internship so I didn’t refuse to work in Finance department. But yes of course, I

am glad that I took that opportunity and today I feel really satisfied as a Business Student.

I worked in Payable department which is a sub department of a Finance department. During my

6 weeks of internship, I tried to relate each task I performed to HR. Eventually I found that not

just Hr department but all the departments of zong; e.g Engineering, customer service,

Information technology, Administration etc are related to payable department. Payable

department takes all the invoices from all departments in order to verify them and then pay

departments on the behalf of company.

For Instance; If we talk about HR department It arranges the Training sessions etc for the

company’s employees. All the money spent on this session is claimed by HR department to

payable department in a form of physical invoice. This is paid by payable department after all

verifications.

Benefits of the Program: I believe that Internship program has benefited my in many various ways:

First of all, it’s a particle change and real life experience of what we study in our throughout 4

years of our BBA (Hons). It make as implement the theory we have learned from our instructors.

This program has furnished me once again before going into real professional world and of

course it has equipped my curriculum vitae. Also, having gotten a chance to interact with most

staff, I have an imminent on how to shape my career towards a compassionate job in the near

future.

The internship program gave me a opportunity not only to work with Zong Telecommunication

but also learn from honest, supporting and hardworking Supervisor. This would reflect much

onto my experience. Working with people from different parts of the world was a rare chance

that you can’t easily get from any other organization. Therefore to me this was another

opportunity to make friends and share ideas.

To conclude, I must declare that I as an intern at Zong Telecommunication Company was a

worthwhile experience that I did not come across during my studies. Rest, definitely it was my

colleagues and manager glory too that they tried their best to make my stay there a very

memorable there.

Page 10: Zong Internship Report

Observations: I observed many things in many perspectives, some as positive and some as negative. I realized

whether it’s a small or huge company each member plays an important role. To achieve an

organizational core vale and vision each person plays a lead role. During 6 weeks, I realized that

in many different ways and occasions.

I observed that Zong is great place to enhance personal skills as it’s a multinational company and

non Pakistan also works there. Employees were very co-operative with each other. The

environment is very friendly for everyone. Apart, No matter where you are, whom you’re

working with but to achieve what you want, you have to be good in teamwork. Teamwork is a

key role for any organization. It is equally important as the ability to work independent.

During my internship, I had an interview with few people of different departments. I came to

know a lot about Zong and there processes and systems and also about people and their mindset

as an employee. I found that Zong has improved a lot since Mr. Fan (CEO) has joined Zong in

2011. He has introduced many structures, strategies and processes for overall progress. I

observed many people working at zong not because they want to but they have to. Some are very

happy but some are too frustrated. There must be several reasons but once again thanks to this

program through which I not just imagine but feel and see myself as a successful employee for

next 10 years, by not doing the mistakes that I have learned and observed from my internship.

On the positive side, I have also noticed the motivation level of Zong employees I have seen

working employee for late nights even over nights. They seemed really motivated and

hardworking. This actually encouraged me a lot.

Conclusion: In conclusion, I must thanks to my both supervisor ; Ms. Heena Ghazanfar who was my senior

supervisor and Mr. Tariq who was my immediate supervisor, They directed me in such a

superior behavior and gave me an opportunity to work with them. I am really pleased about the

way I have been guided through this internship programme with Zong, starting from the chance

to take the time I needed to refresh and expand my knowledge in several issues about

understanding the payable process, gathering invoices, verification process, great environment,

great supervision. It is through them that I did enjoy my work every day.

Recommendation: Through my study and understanding about Zong, I recommend that Zong should keep

improving their environment and systems etc. Zong has really developed since last one year and

still they are working on it. Recently they have hit Warid as their competitor. Through the

interview from their employee there are some problems they are facing and infact I have

observed myself. Zong need to have a transparency between their departments, so that everyone

can stay updated about the current situation and they will be less conflict amongst employees as

well.

I found many employees demotivated as well. Zong should give motivational sessions to its

employees so that they can carry on with their good performance and maximum output. My

recommendation is that they should work on their departmental restructuring, as they do not have

proper and separated departments for each field; e.g HR department. And now they are planning

to establish in near future.

From my experience I can enthusiastically recommend Zong internship programme to everyone

who would like to experience an organization that has in my opinion realized their core values.

As an intern what comes with it, is the willingness to improve knowledge about the environment,

your work experience and you have to be able to work independently, self motivated and you

must solve smaller problems on your own. Anyhow, if you’ve got into some serious trouble you

will always find somebody assisting you to work it out.

Weekly Journal Entries

1st July 2012 - 8

th July 2012

On the first day, I had an introductory session with the people whom I am going to work and

about the departments. As I was new to the organization first I had to study about the

organization, about their mission, vision and core values.

I had an interesting chat with the colleagues’ fellows and with my supervisor about this

internship programme and my future plans. I was taking a summer courses as well in university,

this was something that my supervisor didn’t like. We had a discussion on this and I requested

her to allow me relief just for my classes and she did. After that I had a round to an organization

and all departments; it was a building consists of 5 floors and cafeteria on the top floor. I also

had an internee training session in which they told about themselves, their product and internees’

particular departments and tasks.

In this week I was assigned to do a job to study and understand the entire payable process. That

consists of 6 steps. In the first week I started with the first step and that was collection invoices

from the different departments and arranging them on one side.

9th

July 2012 - 15th

July 2012

From second week my tasks was expanded from collection invoices to shifting it to the Database

so that administration can verify the physical invoices. But as in this week we were having

exams as well so I was not able to spend much time with them but somehow I managed to be

attentive on job time.

As I was working in a payable department I was under direct supervision of Mr. Tariq. He is

very polite and hardworking person and guided me very well during my internship and he also

use to share the departmental issues with all internees as well.

16th

July 2012 – 22st July 2012

Well in this week I was pretty much cleared about my job and I have learned the whole payable

process. I often go to my manager and supervisor and discuss the work problems and have

discussion as much as I can, so that I can learn beyond I want it.

In this week I was suppose to continuo my payable process with the third step. That was to

forward the invoices which were verified from the administration department to the concerned

person/department, to whom that invoice belongs.

Page 13: Zong Internship Report

13 | P a g e

Zong Telecommunication

Although it was getting difficult for me to manage with my internship assignments as well as the

university work. But I had to do that because at the end of the day I have to do different tasks at

the same time to be strong enough to face the real market.

23nd

July 2012 – 29th

July 2012

In this week I started to have informal chats with my fellows and employees there. I came to

know a lot about the Zong history and also the mindsets of the people there. I came to know

about the upcoming strategies and plans of the zong and what they are upto etc.

My supervisor was satisfies with my work. He asked me to continuo my job with little private

work and that was a detailed verification of the invoices, which was actually quite confidential

for the outsiders. But being a internee they allow us to take over it. It was very hectic but I

enjoyed it, it gave me the sense of responsibility.

30th

July 2012 – 5th

August 2012

I found this week was the most difficult as compared to previous ones. I have to learn their

system known as Sun system. Which carry all the transaction of invoices that has to be entered

after verification. But I must say that this was the week in which I really found myself hard

working and passionate about the work.

This organization taught me a lot. I believe it is very useful for student to do internship here, who

are very serious about their goals and carrier and want to have experience. I have completed my

work and assignments before due date and the supervisor were quite impressed by my work.

6th

August 2012 – 15st August 2012

This was my last week and I as well as my supervisor was satisfied with my work. This week I

was handle almost the whole payable process. As it was my last week so I had to work a lot but I

didn’t found it difficult because I already knew enough to handle it.

I found this place amazing in a sense of teaching many things. After 40 days I can literally feel a

real change in me. I must say anyone who survives in a corporate would is a Hero, responsible,

diplomatic and smart enough to cope the entire world.

Learning and Experience: I was quite unsure about, if I can make it or not because of no experience of corporate world

decision to establish its first project abroad in Pakistan, as explained by Zong’s CEO Mr. Fan

Yunjun, was taken primarily because of the strong and time-tested relationship of the two

countries. However, other factors were also involved. Chief among these considerations was the

fact that Pakistan is home to the 6th largest population in the world, giving it tremendous

potential as a market for the mobile industry, a similarity it shares with its neighboring brother,

China. The decision was supplemented by the desire to encourage development in other sectors
