The Chesapeake and OhioRai l roa i iSta t ion and Bunkhouse a r e loca ted a t t h e corner of Eighth S t r e e t and Fourth Avenue i n Marlinton, West ~ i r g i n i a . The s t a t i o n , designed f o r both passenqer us3 and f r e i g h t handling, i s a frame, r ec tangu la r , one-story bu i ld ing measuring 76 x 16 f e e t . I t s dependency, a bunkhouse located a s h o r t d i s t ance t o t h e nor theas t , i s a one-story frame bu i ld ing measuring 24 x 16 f e e t . Both s t r u c t u r e s f e a t u r e v e r t i c a l board and b a t t e n s i d i n g and decorat i-e brackets i n the wide p ro jec t ing eaves of t h e i r gable r o o f s . Of s p e c i a l i n t e r e s t i s t h e wooden t r ace ry of t h e s t a t i o n gable ends s imula t ing a hammer-beam system. The foundations of both bui ld ings a r e heavy, square, wood p i e r s s e t on cement f o o t e r s and hidden from view by v e r t i c a l board s k i r t s a t the bu i ld ings ' s i d e s and r e a r .

A gabled, three-sided bay embellished with wood t r a c e r y and f i t t e d with t h r e e double-hung windows forms p a r t of t h e s t a t i o n agen t ' s o f f i c e . This bay once contained a colored bu t unl ighted semaphore which was used t o d i r e c t movements of t r a i n s u n t i l , with the advent of e l e c t r i c i t y , a l i g h t e d semaphore was mounted on a pole ou t s ide the a g e n t ' s and t e l e g r a p h e r ' s oEfice.

Though t h e f r o n t (nor th) facade and s i d e s of t h e s t a t i o n a r e enlivened wi.th Vic tor ian millwork, the r e a r (south) s i d e s of both t h e s t a t i o n and bunk- house a r e without decora t ive f e a t u r e s . While the s t a t i o n was i n use (The C & 0 S t a t i o n i s p resen t ly vacant .) t h e r e was a loading platform, on the l e v e l o f t h e passenger platform, which extended across the isjest and south s ides . The s t a t i o n has tigo br ick chimneys while the bunkhouse has one - a l l f o r coa l o r wood s toves . Tile windows a r e s tandard double-hung sash with 2/2 l i g h t s of t h i c k g l a s s , and the doors a r e s o l i d four-panel types. The f r e i g h t depot ( s x t i o n ) of t h e s t a t i o n was formerly en te red through double s l i d i n g doors both f r o n t and r e a r ; these doors were removed and t h e opening walled over present ing the only s i g n i f i c a n t a l t e r a t i o n i n the f a b r i c of t h e 1901 bui ld ing. Ex te r io r p a i n t co lo r of the Yarl inton C & 0 S t a t i o n has va r i ed over t h e years from the o r i g i n a l green t o a b r i g h t yellow with white t r i m , and l a t e r s t i l l t o an o f f white with s l a t e blue t r i m .

The i n t e r i o r wa l l s and c e i l i n g s of both bui ld ings have narrow p ine parl.eling. The f l o o r s a r e of medium width oak boards. These wal ls and c e i l i n g s were pain ted i n a p a l e blue except i n t h e bottoms of the wa l l s from window s i l l l e v e l t o the f l o o r which was a darker blue. The wai t ing room benches a r e no longer i n t h e s t a t i o n b u t some c h a i r s , desks, cab ine t s , e t c . a r e s t i l l i n p lace . The windowless t i c k e t windows a r e t h e r e and so a r e t h e two red-painted l e v e r s of the semaphore system.

The main t r ack , $2360, of t h e Greenbrier Division i s i n p lace . The pass ing t r a c k , #1705, i s about 50 f e e t e a s t of t h e s t a t i o n and t h e s i d i n g , #1704, f o r wait ing t r a i n s i s undistrubed. A t o o l house s tands empty a few f e e t e a s t of t h e bunkhouse. The water tank s tands 300 yards e a s t nea r the s i t e of ths o l d t u r ~ k i b l e .

The Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Scation a t Marlinton, West ~ i r g i r l i a is one of only a few remaining l i k e bui ld ings of the many b u i l t throughout t h e system by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. The company b u i l t hugh s t r u c t u r e s for te rminals a t t h e end of t h e i r l i n e s and l a r g e two-story br ick bui ld ings t o s e r v e a s passenger s t a t i o n s and f r e i g h t depots i n c e n t e r s of l a r g e populat ions. How- e v e r , along t h e r a i l l i n e s i n towns and v i l l a g e s t h e company placed t h e i r smal l frcine freight-express-mail-passenger s t a t i o n s a s a necess i ty f o r t h e t r a v e l i n g pub l i c and a s a k ind of trademark of the r a i l r o a d company. The I4arlinton S t a t i o n 3s one of these . When it was b u i l t i n 1901 it represented t o t h e l o c a l poijulace t h e wi l l ingness of a l a r g e comnercial system t o he lp the a rea by t r a n s p o r t i n g passengers and mate r i a l s i n a manner t o insure t h a c t h e g r e a t t i n b e r i n g indus t ry on the Greenbrier River would l a s t and grow f o r vany yea r s . The marlin to^ C & 0 S t a t i o n a l s o rep resen t s a s i g n i f i c a n t and remarkably w e l l presei-ved a r c h i t e c t u r a l mode charac ter ized by v e r t i c a l board and b a t t e n e x t e r i o r f i n l s h , bracketed eaves, and wood gable t r a c e r y .

became p res iden t of t h e C & 0,. h i s ccmpany's t r a c k s had reached the Jackson River near Covington, Virgin ia . It requi red the b e s t r a i l r o a d engineering o f t h a c day t o l a y s t e e l ac ross the Allegheny Xou~l ts ins . Their first t r a i n a r r i v z d i n White Sulphur Springs by Ju ly1 ,1869 . Great labor and dar ing was needed t o c u t a road through t h e New River Canyon t o join with the cons t ruct ion coning from Guyandotte on t h e Ohio River by 1873. Though t h e hauling of coal and f r e i q h t gave the company inc reas ing business, by l a t e 1290 the C & 0 began t o b u i l d d i v i s i o n s and spurs i n t o the v a l l e y s t o reach a young b u t f a s t growing lumber i ndus t ry .

A t Covington, Vi rg in ia , i n 1898, a l a r g e paner m i l l was cons t ructed - it i s now the Westvaco M i l l . This m i l l needed "be timber which was on Lye mountains along the Greenbrier River i n Greenbrier and Pocahontas count ies of West Vi rg in ia . T ? e C s 0 decided t o l ay a t r ack along the r i v e r f r o n t h e i r na in l i n z a t T.fi!itcomb e a s t of Ronceverte. The const ruct ion began i n November 1899. By us ing h u ~ d r e d s of l abore r s and horse and mule-drawn machinery, Marlinton was reached i n October 1900. Soon a f t e r t h i s a d a i l y round- t r ip passenger se rv ice was e s t a b l i s h e d between Ronceverte, the te rminal of t h e Greenbrier Division, and PIarlinton, t h e County Seat of Pocahontas and a r a p i d l y growing tvm. The r a i l r o a d s t a t i o n b u i l t f o r Nar l in ton i n 1901 was a s ing le - s to ry , gable- roofed frame r e c t a n g l e with v e r t i c a l board and b a t t e n s i d i n g , bracke ted eaves , and gable wood t r i n . Few ~ l t s i - a t i i o r i s and cjenorally good maintenance over the y e a r s have preserved t h i s turn-of- the-century b u i l d i n g and i t s companion, a board and b a t t e n bunkhouse. V ic to r i an e r a c h a r a c t e r a t t h e f r o n t (northwest) e l e v a t i o n h a s surv ived i n a three-s ided window bay beneath a wood-trimmed gable bonnet. The t a l l , narrow doorways a r e sumounted by transoms o f g l a s s of s e v e r a l panes each, whi le door and window cas ing i s pronounced (and was o r i g i n a l l y pa in t ed a c o n t r a s t - i n g c o l o r ) . A running course of d iagonal tongue and groove boards forms an e x t e r i o r wainscot ing upon which t h e v e r t i c a l boards and b a t t e n s of t h e wa l l s u r - f a c e s r e s t . The i n t e g r i t y of bo th t h e s t r u c t u r a l and a r c h i t e c t u r a l cond i t i on o f t h e Vic to r i an p e r i o d hiarlinton C & 0 Rai l road S t a t i o n i s s i g n i f i c a n t .

The Greenbr ie r Div is ion of t h e r a i l r o a d was extended t o Durbin i n 1902 and l a t e r was l i n k e d wi th t h e Coal and I r o n Rai l road vihich e s t a b l i s h e d a passenger s e r v i c e between E l k i n s and Durbin i n 1903. The Greenbrier t r a c k was extended n o r t h t o Winterburn i n Novenber 1905. Along t h i s d i v i s i o n of about one hundred m i l e s t h e r e were twenty r e g u l a r s t a t i o n s f o r passenger s e r v i c e t r a i n s and a t l e a s t t e n lumber m i l l s t o be se rv i ced by f r e i g h t t r a i n s . I n 1910 t h i s road became a p a r l o r c a r r o u t e . The un i t ed S t a t e Rai l road I.:ail Se rv i ce began a Rai l road Pos t O f f i c e Route on two r e g u l a r runs of t h e Div is ion i n 1921.

Passenger s e r v i c e on t h e ree en brier ~ i v i s i o n was n o t a b l e t o su rv ive the hard blow of t h e "Great Depression" of t h e 1930s; t h e r e f o r e , i n 1958, t h i s s e r v i c e ended. The f r e i g h t s e r v i c e s cont inued wi th one hau l a day u n t i l t h e 1960s and then one t r a i n p e r week i n t o the 1970s. During t h e s e 20 o r more yea r s most o f the b r i g h t yel low s t a t i o n s were removed. The few s t a t i o n s which remained were p;:Lnted a somber grey . The town of b k r l i n t o n p l a n s f o r t h e a c q u i s i t i o n , r e s t o r - a t i o n and p u b l i c use of t h e b u i l d i n g throush a l o c a l o rgan iza t ion .
