Orde Wingate, "Guerrilla" warfare and long-range penetra-tion, 1940-44. in: Small wars and insurgencies (ISSN 0959-2318) 17.3,

2006.Sep., 241 to 262. Note: Major General Orde Wingate was a highly controversial fig-

ure in his time and remains so among historians. However, his eccentric and colourful personality has drawn attention away from the nature of his military ideas, the most important of which was his concept of long-range penetration, which originated from his observations of his operations in Italian-occupied Ethiopia in 1941, and evolved into the model he put into practice in the Chindit operations in Burma in 1943–44. A review of Wingate's own official writings on this Subject reveals that long-range penetration combined local guerrilla irregulars, purpose-trained regular troops and airpower into large-scale offensive operations deep in the enemy rear, with the intention of disrupting his plan-ning process and creating situations regular forces could exploit. This evolved organically from Major General Colin Gubbins' doctrine for guerrilla resistance in enemy occupied areas, and bears some resemblance to the operational model applied by US and Allied forces, post September 2001.

‘Chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infection in former Brit-

ish Far East prisoners of war / G. V. Gill ; E. Welch ; J. W. Bailey ; D. R. Bell ; N. J. Beeching in: QJM : monthly journal of the Association of Physicians

(ISSN: 1460-2725) 97.12, 2004, 789-795 Abstract: Background: Chronic infections with the nematode worm

Strongyloides stercoralis can occur in former WWII Far East prisoners of war (FEPOWs). The condition may be asympto-matic, but frequently causes a characteristic urticarial `larva cur-rens' rash. Under conditions of immunosuppression (particularly systemic corticosteroid treatment) potentially fatal dissemination of larvae (`hyperinfection`) may occur. Aim: To review our total experience of strongyloidiasis in former FEPOWs, and investi-gate its prevalence, characteristics and risk factors. Design: Ret-rospective case series. Methods: We reviewed 2072 records of all FEPOWs seen at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, 1968-2002. Cases with strongyloidiasis were compared with non-infected controls. Results: There were 248 (12%) with strongy-loidiasis. Diagnostic features included larva currens rash (70%), eosinophilia (66%), positive faecal culture (30%), positive faecal microscopy (26%), and positive serology (64%). Mean (+-SD) age of cases was 65 +- 7 years, and as expected, their blood eosi-nophil counts were significantly higher than controls (775 vs. 238 x 106/l, p p p p Discussion: S. stercoralis infection is com-mon amongst ex-FEPOWs, particularly those from the Thai-Burma Railway project. It is usually characterized by a `larva currens' rash and marked eosinophilia. The condition is emi-nently treatable, and continued diagnostic surveillance is needed, if cases of potentially fatal hyperinfection are to be avoided. – BL-DSL

Chronic Strongyloides stercoralis infection in former British Far East prisoners of war / G. V. Gill; E Welch; J W Bailey; D R Bell; N J Beeching in: QJM : monthly journal of the Association of Physicians

Diagnostic features included larva currens rash (70%), eosinophilia (66%), positive faecal culture (30%), positive faecal

microscopy (26%), and positive serology (64%). – BL-DSL

in POW recovery in the Far East during the last months of the war and immediately after VJ Day. This was a task normally al-lotted to the International Committee of the Red Cross. It exam-ines both strategic and humanitarian motivations as possible ex-planations of this policy. It reviews the means used to execute this policy along the Burma-Thailand Railway, including close cooperation with the Thai resistance movement. The success of SOE's operations are assessed and the impact of their testimony in the Tokyo War Crimes Trials is also reviewed against the background of a growing appreciation of the role of secret ser-vice in providing evidence to international tribunals.

India’s divided loyalties by Peter Heehs. in: History today 45, 1995.July Note. The fall of Singapore was one of the greatest disasters ever

suffered by the British armed forces. Left unprotected by the de-struction of the American fleet in Pearl Harbor and the sinking of the warships Prince of Wales and Repulse, the garrison waited helplessly as the Japanese army swept down the Malay penin-sula. The siege began on February 8th, 1942, and was over a week later. 85,000 men, what was left of the British, British-Indian, and Australian forces, surrendered to the invader. Not all the defeated soldiers had to spend the next three years in Japanese prison camps. Of the 60,000 Indians who surrendered, 25,000 chose to go over to the enemy. They became the core of the Indian National Army (INA), which two years later took part in the Japanese invasion of India. In that campaign INA soldiers faced their own countrymen, members of General William Slim's

mostly Indian 14th Army, which crushed them and the Japanese army they served, greatly hastening the end of the war. In May 1945 Rangoon was retaken by an Indian division; the same month the ragtag remains of the INA laid down their arms. - questia

How World War II shaped Burma’s future : colonial powers beat the Japanese but lost their empires / by Bertil Lintner in: Irrawaddy 13.8, 2006, April 30 Note: Colonial powers beat the Japanese but lost their empires ...

"... while the Pacific War marked the beginning of the end of co-lonialism, it had another, more severe impact on Burma. In the beginning, Aung San and his Burman nationalists had sided with the Japanese. His Burma Independence Army was armed and trained by the Japanese, while the Allied powers armed and equipped hill peoples such as the Karen and Kachin to fight the occupiers. Centuries of mistrust between the Burmans and the hill peoples resurfaced, and those wounds have not yet been healed. Even today, many Karen talk with bitterness about atroci-ties carried out against them by the BIA during the Japanese oc-cupation, and the Kachin are proud to point out that they already had celebrated their victory manau in Myitkyina by the time the Burman nationalists in March 1945 turned their guns against the Japanese. The arming of the hill peoples, and vast quantities of weapons left behind by the Japanese, meant that Burma’s ethnic conflicts from the very beginning turned violent ..."

The sources of the Australian tradition in irregular warfare, 1942-1974 in: Small wars & insurgencies (ISSN: 0959-2318) 20.1.

2009, 118-140 Abstract: This article had its genesis in a background study for the

development of a new Australian Army counter-insurgency doc-trine. Archival research showed that the Australian counter-insurgency doctrine employed in such post-1945 conflicts as Burma, Malaya, Borneo and Vietnam originated in the jungle campaigns of the South West Pacific Area during World War II. The historical record also showed that the Army's counter-insurgency doctrine, as with its World War II-jungle warfare doctrine, was a pragmatic amalgam of Australian experience and British doctrine. The article traces this process through the de-velopment of a series of doctrine manuals. It also considers the contribution of key individuals to both counter-insurgency theory and practice. This distinctively Australian approach to the devel-opment of doctrine was responsible for producing a highly suc-cessful manual, The Division in Battle: Pamphlet No. 11, Counter-Revolutionary Warfare (DIB 11), which the Army used during its involvement in Vietnam. – BL-DSL

1, 2009, A75-A75 Abstract: Over one hundred thousand British, Dutch, Australian

and American troops became prisoners of the Japanese when they invaded Singapore in 1942; twenty thousand of them were Australians, members of the second AIF. One in four died as Prisoners-of-War (POW). Their torment and torture at the hands of the Japanese during three years of captivity - both in Changi prison camp and as slave labour on the Burma-Thailand railway - have been the Subject of many books. In the absence of photog-raphy the graphic record of cruelty and hardship and the pain and suffering of the POW's on the Burma railway depended upon a few talented artists. Opportunities to record these scenes and par-ticularly some of the medical conditions encountered were pro-vided and encouraged by their senior medical officers. The role of Albert Coates and `Weary' Dunlop in providing leadership and inspiration for these artists under trying circumstances is dis-cussed in this paper. – BL-DSL

‘Strefford , Patrick How Japan's post-war relationship with Burma was shaped

by AID / Patrick Strefford in: Asian affairs (ISSN: 0306-8374) 41.1. 2010, 35-45 Abstract: A relatively small group of Japanese war veterans has

played a major part in creating a favourable image of Burma in Japan. In the early 1950s both Japan and Burma needed a swift agreement on reparations, the Japanese because the export mar-

kets and natural resources of South East Asia offered a real op-portunity to rebuild the Japanese economy, Burma because eco-nomic policy was already faltering and financial aid was needed. The Reparations Agreement between Japan and Burma became the model for ODA agreements with other South East Asian na-tions and the Japanese committed large sums to Burma, yet the Japanese mercantilist approach was never compatible with the Burmese road to Socialism. Since the imprisonment of Aung San Suu Kyi, some in Japan have promoted a policy of solidarity to-wards Burma, while others, including the new Prime Minister, Hatoyama have advocated an approach based on concern for hu-man rights. – BL-DSL

Military expediency : a determining factor in the Japanese policy regarding Burmese independence in: Journal of Southeast Asian studies 9, 1978.Sept., 248

to 267 Sbrega 1097: <With research through Japanese sources, Yoon

traces Japanese wartime politicies in Burma. By dissolving the Burmese governemt and creating a military administration, the local Japanese commander contributed to a Burmese uprising (the Anti-Facist People’s Freedom League). The sudden Japanese decision to grant independence – an independene without sover-eignty – came too late. According th the author, Japan probably could have retained Burmese support if independence had been granted in March 1942.>
