Newsletter #10 December, 1983

SEASONS GREETINGS

Best wishes for a happy holiday season to all IBRO members and their families.

SPECIAL EDITION

As mentioned in the last newsletter, Bob Soderman has contributed a wealth of information on bouts from 1920-24 based on his research in the Chicago Tribune and The New York Times. This special newsletter is being issued solely for the purpose of disseminating that information.

Included are additions and corrections for champions and claimants for 1920, 1921, 1923 (Jan. through August only) and 1924. Also included are miscellaneous items of interest selected from those newspapers. Items marked "note" are Bob Soderman's comments while those marked "ed. note" are John Grasso's comments.

The bouts are listed as reported in the newspapers. There are a few bouts listed as either W or L that should be more properly listed as ND-W or ND-L. In order to maintain truly accurate records, it would be extremely valuable if IBRO could put together a list of jurisdictions that did not permit referee's decisions along with the dates of these laws and other pertinent restrictions such as the maximum length of bouts.

INDEX

Also included in this newsletter is an index of all records appearing in IBRO newsletters #1 - 10.

1 921 and 1923 Results - Champions and Claimants

All of the following results have been verified by Bob Soderman from microfilm of the Chicago Tribune and/or the New York Times. An asterisk indicates correction and/or addition to the record as listed in the 1983 Ring Record Book.

Mike Ballerino

1/20/23* Carl Tremaine, New York KO by 2 (not 1/19 and not KO by 3) 4/30/23* Cuddy DeMarco, Philadelphia W 8 (not ND 8, add'I date and place) 6/18/23* Charlie Goodman, New York L 6 (bout not listed) 7/31/23* Joe O'Donnell, Philadelphia W 8 (not ND 8, addil date and place)

Jack Bernstein

1/5/23 Pepper Martin, New York W 12 2/13/23 Gene Delmont, New York W 12 4/14/23* Billy DeFoe, New York D 12 (not 11/3/23 - see ed. note below) 5/ 8/23 Elino Flores, New York W 15 5/30/23 Johnny Dundee, New York W 15 6/25/23 Freddie Jacks, Philadelphia KO 5 7/31/23 Harry Kid Brown, Philadelphia ND-L 8 (not H.Kid Brown) 8/ 9/23* Pal Moran, New York D 12 (not Jimmy Goodrich and not D 10)

ed. note - the discrepancies in this record aroused my curiousity and I did some research to attempt to discover how these errors occurred. The findings surprised me.

1 - the 1983 RRB record for Jack Bernstein for 1923 is identical with the one in the 1942 RRB.

2 the record in Ring Battles of Centuries (1925 ed.) and also the 1924 Andrews agrees with the ones in the RRB as to sequence of bouts but the Baird, Brady and Greene bouts have no dates; the Noble bout is listed as April with no day; the 8/9 bout is with Moran and following the 10/12 Kansas bout and preceding the 12/17 bout are undated bouts with Defoe and Kabakoff.

3 - apparently this is where Nat Fl eischer got his record and he assumed the bouts (including the undated ones) were in chronological order. But he guessed at the dates because

4 - the 1924 Everlast (as well as the 1934 Post) lists these dates - 1/27 Baird, 3/2 Brady, 3/29 Green (no 'E' and exh. 4), 4/15 DeFoe, 7/10 Kabikoff. An additional bout on 12/1/23 with Charley Pilkington, New York WF 6 is also listed.

ed. note - the undated bout with Phil Kaplan was probably 12/18/23 in New York since both the 1924 Everlast and the 1925 Ring Battles of Centuries list it as such. Everlast also lists a 3/29/23 bout with Elino Flores, New York, exh. D 4; a 4/20/23 bout with Jim Montgomery, Norfolk, W 10 and a 6/8/23 bout with Cowboy Padgett, Youngstown, 0. Georges Carpentier

7/ 2/21 Jack Dempsey, Jersey City KO by 4 5/ 6/23* Marcel Nilles, Paris KO 8 (not KO 1)

note - "crowd of 40,000 at Buffalo Stadium, where he lest to Siki, Sept. 24, 1922. This is Carpentier's first fight since. After 5 rounds, Georges was gasping under body blow punishment, and only his ring generalship and Nilles' mediocrity saved him. First round even. Nilles took 2nd by wide margin, on body blows. In 4th, Carpentier bleeding at the mouth and taking more body shots. The 5th was the same and Georges looked ready to wilt. A right to the stomach put Marcel down in the 6th. His claim of foul was disallowed. In the 7th, Carpentier continued to rally and Marcel was reeling. After 1:45 of the 8th, a Carpentier right floored Nilles for the count."

note - both of these were shown in the New York Times as scheduled bouts, but no results were shown. In the pre-fight story it referred to Bushy Graham as a lightweight from Brooklyn. This was probably not the Bushy Graham who became bantamweight champion.

** - also delete the 8/9/23 bout with Bernstein from the record of Goodrich. Bout was between Jack Bernstein and Pal Moran.

note - Herring's claim probably stems from his win on foul, in 6 rounds, at Detroit, on March 27,1925 over Pinkey Mitchell. This claim needs further research, for verification.

12

Jack Johnson

5/ 6/23* Farmer Lodge, Havana ND 4 (not KO 4)

note - Lodge was hit in the stomach in the 4th and claimed foul. The referee stopped the fight and said "no decision". The fight was supposed to be resumed on Suriday, May 13. Johnson was well ahead at the time of the stoppage. There was no mention in the Chicago Tribune on Monday, May 14th of any further Johnson-Lodge meeting.

5/21/23* Jack Thompson, Havana W 12 (not ND 15 and not May 20)

note - This result was shown in the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday, May 22nd as a Monday, May 21st fight. The fight was very poor and each man was fined $500 for "stalling".

ed. note - There were two boxers named Jack Kid Wolfe. The one who was the junior featherweight champion was from Cleveland while the other was from Philadelphia. Most likely the bouts included above that were not listed were those of the Philadelphia fighter. The Eddie Pinchott bout credited to the Cleveland boxer in the RRB should probably be deleted from his record.

However, an article in Chicago Daily News of Sat. July 20, 1929 said: "Mandell won his first few pro bouts by kayo, and then beat Benny Shapiro, in 8 rds., at St. Louis.") Aug. 28 E. Chicago Barney Doolan W Dec-10 Sept. 14 (?) St. Louis Benny Shapiro W Dec-8

(Note- this result was not shown in 1 0 20 Chi Tribune, but is my guess for the date of the Shapiro fight. This would have been on the Ray Smith v.s. 3ob Martin card. But, 1c782 RING shows Mandell as having kayoed Shapiro in one round; in contradiction of Daily News reference above.)

Oct. 5 Kenosha Barney Dolan (sic)

W Dec-10

Note- A7r. 21, July 28, Aug. 14, Aug. 28 and Oct. 5 are Mandell fights listed in Chi Tribune results for 1920; Sept. 14 was not shown in Tribune results and is merely a guess.

1982 Rings shows for 1920, with no dates or cities: win ko Johnny Hagerman- 3

Benny Shapiro- 1 Kid Corbett- 4 Johnny Gannon- 3 Kid Unger- 3

no dec. Stub Lowery- 4 Johnny Gannon-10 Frankie Izzo-10 Barney Doolan-10 Kid Flannery-10

* have verified these fights, as to results, dates and cities; except that the second Gannon fight (July 28) was 8 and not 10 rds.

Missing from Ring above is a second bout with Barney Dolan (sic) on Oct. 5, at Kenosha (inasmuch as this report was a wire result, I would change this to "Doolan" in place of "Dolan".). Unfound fights, shown in Ring, are: Hagerman, Corbett, Unger, Lowery and Flannery. Possible dates, and cities, for these "missing" Mandell fights (or others) are: Wed. Aug. 18-Rockford; Thur. Aug. 26-Rock Island; Mon. Sept. 6-St. Louis; Tues. Sept. 21-Beardstown; Mon. Sept. 27-Peoria; Thur. Oct. 21-South Bend; Tues. Oct. 26- St. Louis; Thur. Nov. 11-Peoria and Mon. Dec. 6- La Salle.

SAMMY MANDELL- YEAR 1920 ADDENDUM

Further clarification for the St. Louis fight, v.s. Benny Shapiro. The Chicago Daily News, of July 20, 1929 said: "He had a few fights, all of which he won (on) knockouts, and he then was matched with Benny Shapiro in an eight-round bout in St. Louis.

"Sammy knocked him out in the first session and was to re-ceive 417 for his end. However, the promoter wouldn't pay him off as the fight ended too soon.

"The result was that Eenny was given a fifteen-minute rest and came back to face Sammy(again). On this occasion the battle went the entire distance and Sammy received the verdict as well as the money."

Thus, it looks like Mandell scored both a kayo and a decision win, on the same night, over Shapiro. For the purpose of deter-mination of Mandell's correct fight record, however it probably would be best to show his bout in St. Louis with Shapiro as a 1st round kayo win; inasmucn as this was the real result, with the eight round decision win coming aftezward, albeit on the same night.

No result was seer. in NY Times, on Mai Sunday Sept. 28, or in Chicago Tribune. Record for Tunney, in both 1925 Andrews and Everlast, does not show this fight. Ray Neuman record was not in either 1925 book; but Neuman record on P. 76 of 1927 Everiast, shows a ten round decision loss to Tunney in 1924. 'used on the above evidenne, - I would say that this bout should be added tc Tunney's record; based on the .,following evidenze: Milwaukee Journal story, Ray Neunan's record. !ecause this was a Saturday fight, it is easy to'see why it didn't get reported in Sunday papers. My guess is that 'Ebensburg' is a suburb of 7hiladelphia.
