Dear friends,
We are still mourning the loss of innocent lives in Congregation Tree of Life in Pittsburgh, PA with the whole Jewish community throughout Unit-ed States and the world. We have seen an outpour-ing support from the people of all faiths. This gives us hope that the events, such as this, can be prevent-ed in the future. We have held a memorial service on Monday, October 29. Many representatives from the local government officials and churches came to ex-press their solidarity.
Here is the address to the congregation I have given that night.
“Yesterday, Mrs. Okrent - the principal of the religious school and I took our seventh grade stu-dents to New York city. The theme of the trip was Jews in the Ancient civilization. We visited Egyptian Art section in the Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as Jewish Museum on 92nd street.
The children discovered that there was a Jew-ish presence from prehistoric times in the land of Canaan and looked at the artifacts, indicating that Israelites indeed had a presence in Egypt.
Unfortunately, as long and reach is the history of Jewish people, so too the history of anti-Semitism dates back thousands of years. The reasons were many - religious, political, economic, but probably the strongest one - a simple distaste for people, who are different.
On November 9 we will commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Kristallnacht. Think about it - only 80 years ago the Jewish homes and businesses

were destroyed and many lives taken in the heart of the most progressive and edu-cated country in Europe. And we know that this was only the beginning of the hor-rific events of holocaust.
We continue to teach our children: “Never again”, yet the events of Saturday morning proved that it can and did happen again.
We, American Jews, considered United States, the country whose Declara-tion of Independence states: “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”, a safe heaven. And so it was. But in the last several years we saw the rise of anti-Semitism that took a new form. It is expressed against Israel, the only democratic country in the Middle East, and by default against all Jews. American Jews came under the at-tack by the BDS (Boycott Divestment and Sanctions) movement. Our children are encountering discrimination from the professors and hatred from their fellow stu-dents on college campuses throughout United States who support BDS.
We saw more swastikas on Jewish homes, institutions and cemeteries in the last six years than ever before.
Many feared exactly that, exactly what happened on Saturday at Congrega-tion Tree of Life and so the Jewish institutions and synagogues already tried to be more proactive with upgrading security. At the same time, we want to believe in the goodness of people, and how can you not have the doors open of the house of warship during Shabbat service or a mass. (We all remember the tragic events just a year ago, November 6, at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, TX, where 26 worshippers were killed.)
While we mourn the death of 11 Jewish people, killed in the racist attack, probably the worst in the history of the United States, we must recognize that the gun violence in this country is an ongoing problem and does not discriminate be-tween the race and age. Since Sandy Hook we have been witnessing multiple cases of gun violence in schools, campuses, cinemas, shopping malls and the list goes on.
I think you can all agree that measures should be taken to prevent more in the future.

Friends, we all came here today - Jews and none Jews, because we are hurt, outraged, profoundly sad but not broken, not afraid. And that’s because we know that the goodness in the majority of us will prevail the hatred and bigotry in few, who try to break us. We will continue to stand together against any expression of racism and antisemitism.
Rabbi William Silverman in 1958 - when the JCC in Nashville was bombed. (The language, of course, was the language of 1958.) Addressing his congregation when some suggested cancelling Shabbat services, said: "WE WILL NOT YIELD TO EVIL! We will not capitulate to fear. We will not surrender to violence. We will not submit to intimidation but, as… Jews, we will continue to speak for truth; we shall continue to dedicate ourselves to social justice and to the brotherhood of ALL men, knowing and believing that all men are created in the divine image…"
To which we say, “Amen, amen!”
All the world is just one narrow bridge but the main thing is not to be afraid

Mazel tov to our October B’nai Mitzvah students and their families!!!!
Jared Cenziper, Aidan Rosenbaum, Grace Novick, and Blake Salemi
SOOOOOO proud of your accomplishments!!
Each of you stood with confidence and joy as you became B’nai Mitzvah.
Our school wide theme this month is B’tzelem Elohim—In G-d’s Image – learning differ-ent ways to infuse this concept into who we are as humans…… it has been a wonderful experi-ence for our students.
We are continually collecting tzdekah each week to help the soup kitchen. Please re-member to bring in your extra change. Our Greeters Table has been doing a fantastic job each week. All the children have been getting involved and seem excited to be here.
7th Graders went on a fabulous trip to NYC with Rabbi and Mrs. O. Learned so much and had a great time. The Metropolitan Museum and Jewish Museum offered insight into living in an-cient times.
1st and 2nd Graders are busy putting together a book on the Matriachs and Patriachs.
3rd Graders are continuing to master the Hebrew alef bet. Each week learning new letters.
4th Graders are continuing to learn their prayers. Right now, they are mastering the Ma’ariv prayer.
We are doing a school wide backpack program, NORWESCAP food bank. We will be collecting certain food items, and then donating them so these children will have food to eat over the weekend. This is a wonderful program that everyone will feel really good about helping.
Remember…. There is no religious school on Sundays for the month of NOVEMBER.
WE WILL BE HAVING RELIGIOUS SCHOOL ON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 17 INSTEAD OF SUNDAY!!!!!!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday. Enjoy!
