# 2 DARK EYES - Study Progression for the Cake ( The Form)

1 Study #5 DJAM Dark Eyes Chord chart to discover the Form (A B arrangement), Chord Sequence and Key Signature (usually evidenced in the ending chord). Write these into your #4 Songworks sheet. Writing the Chord Sequence out, clearly identifies what we want our brain to commit to memory.

2 While you can get away with playing the Open (folk) chord shapes most of you are used to, Gypsy Jazz works best with ‘closed’ chord shapes that have the added 6’s and 9 shapes, which give the characteristic darker flavour to this genre. Get a feel for these new chords #6 Gypsy Jazz chord substitutions by playing them alongside the open folk chords. Choose the chord substitutions you want to integrate and write them into the Chord Sequence Box #4 Songworks. Drill these new chords prior to playing the chord sequence. Count yourself in and throughout the required 16 bars and repeat at least 3 times, till you have this chord sequence very solidly under your fingers by memory!

3 Once you have the sequence, it’s time to practice ‘La Pompe’ – the Pump, a distinctive, muted, very regular Gypsy Jazz strum that sets up a perfect repetitive bed for the soloists and singers to mince upon. For Dark Eyes, we are using a long - short, long – short etc, downward strum with a muted and precise rhythm. Refrain from adding upstrokes at first and accent the first downstroke of each bar. Practice comping slowly and precisely.

4 Write down how fast the song should eventually go, the bpm! – (beats per minute) i.e Swing 175 (find it in the left hand corner of chord chart) onto the #4 Songworks sheet at the right side of the Practice BPM line. This is your eventual goal to work toward, incrementally. It’s important to progress slowly toward that intended BPM goal i.e. - don’t practice mistakes over and over to get speed or you may be inputting wrong information which is hard to undo!

On your metronome app, select a nice slow tempo, say 4/4 @ 65 bpm and write that in the left side of your Practice BPM line. This is your starting point! Only notch it up by 5bpm when you can effortlessly play at the previous speed with nice clean chord changes and a distinct La Pompe. Download Tempo perfect free app. below

5 Only when you’re ready, play along to the slow Dark Eyes Backing track.

https://youtu.be/BIDh5yY16XA. Develop a habit of always internally counting how many times the Form repeats, for as you will see in the final backing track, the A form repeats 6 times and B form 2 times – you have to keep counting and know where you are in the Form and this takes practice. By now, take a quick glance at the chord sequence on your #4Songworks page and do this without looking at the chart - you want it under your fingers not on a page! You are not exercising your memory when you look at the chart.

6 Once you have this pattern by memory, add the English lyrics coz they are

the easiest #7Lyrics. Aim to memorise your lyrics bit by bit, building your memory base slowly – understand the lyrics and get a consecutive, visual picture of what the lyrics are saying. Code this in with your chord changes.

Hear the Russian, French and English Lyrics and Syncopation on the final backing track here https://youtu.be/7Di2Cx1BtkU Russian pronunciation https://youtu.be/GUvgQDymz9k

French pronunciation https://youtu.be/I-uxe1Mj2wQ

7 Practice the Head! Pluck the melody accurately at first to the Sibelius playalong Melody backing track https://youtu.be/k9-Wi1puG9g but as you get the ‘feel’ you can adapt it to your taste i.e. swing it, double some notes – this is not classical music! Play around with what fingering (and fret positioning) of the notes works best for you and practice that into your drill.

GET A GOOD SOLID CAKE COOKING! before progressing to Page 9 for Icing Instructions

(it’s quite enough just to play the Cake with a steady La Pompe!

Dark Eyes Gypsy Jazz Chord Substitutions

Gypsy Jazz sounds best with closed position chords • try substituting some of these:

# 8 - 9 DARK EYES – Study Progression for the Icing Soloing

Please note:

It’s best to apply the Icing when the cake is well made and cool to the touch! This more advanced work needs to build upon a solid sense of the FORM developed from #pages 2-3. Please only progress to this when you are secure with the Chord Sequence, Form, GJ chord substitutions & plucked Melody

- don’t get put off by theory overwhelm!

10 Start noodling the #10 D Harmonic Minor Scale Exercises. Once you have the hang of these scales in several positions by memory, work the doubles, 3’s and 4’s, up and back, work this to the slow backing track and add the ‘Ending ideas.’ Slow Dark Eyes practice track https://youtu.be/BIDh5yY16XA (Extension -- add notes of the scale either side of the written ones & try building the D harmonic minor scale from the fifth position Dm shape (7555)

11 Practice the #11 Dark Eyes Triads & Embellishment. Ex. A. Map out the Triad positions first using just your 2nd finger until you clearly get the positions of these new Triad positions.

Ex. B. - Add Neighbour Tone Below.

12 Move onto #12 Dark Eyes Chord Triad and Embellishment. Ex. C. - Neighbour Tone Above. Ex. D. - Combo – Below and Above. *Practice all of these as full patterns with the backing track

13 When confidant with the above, experiment with #13 Mixing scale and Triad Embellishments, weaving embellishment patterns with scales in doubles, 3’s and 4’s and ending ideas. In the spare Tab, experiment writing your own combinations (in pencil)!

14 Advanced players can work with #14 Diminished & -V-1 Runs - A7b9 Resolving to Dm - these diminished scale runs add colour over the A7

Page 9: # 2 DARK EYES

chord (V), resolving to the Dm - Root chord (I) - also the Key. INtegrte these into your soloing practice

15 Study the #15 Group Solo that combines all the ideas studied and master it slowly up to speed. We are aiming for 150bpm to match the final backing track. Practice it with Jen here at 3 speeds. Dark Eyes Solo in 3 speeds https://youtu.be/TCp4Jq98wV4

16. Study the #16 Chord Melody Solo Intro and add your own embellishments and feel. The Ad Lib beginning can be expressive with a free, unregulated beat– so be dramatic, bend the notes, add trills, & tremolo - add your touch!

17. Study the #17 Ensemble Arrangement to suit the final Backing Track and encourage your group members to take ownership of different parts. Gypsy Jazz requires a really solid Comp or bed beneath the music that is precise with a staccato feel. Work as an Ensemble to get a very steady Pompe established and then allow spaces for individuals to either solo or sing or scat. It does require Etiquette and some Stamina to keep it Solid and Reliable for the soloists. La Pompe is the backbone on which it all hangs. It is very satisfying!

18. Do Record yourself to the Interim backing track https://youtu.be/9QIm3_ozb-U & the DARK EYES Final backing track https://youtu.be/7Di2Cx1BtkU

Listen closely for : 1. Am I racing the beat or lagging behind it ? 2. 2. Is my comping regular and accented in the right places? 3. How is my tone quality on melody and solos? - work with vibrato &

expression on notes, tremolo and syncopation – bring it Alive!

* First identify and get familiar with the

* Then play each chord shape as a 3-string

chord only, one each on C, E & A strings.
