Below the helicopter waits in readiness to whisk you to another astonishing peak. As far as the eye can see there are mountains in all directions and with not another soul in sight, this has to be the pinnacle for any skier or boarder.

Canada is the birthplace and spiritual home of heli-skiing and with seemingly endless mountains and abundant snowfall it is not hard to see why. In Europe, Italy offers the best and most varied heli-skiing choices. There are other exotic and adventurous heli-ski destinations around the world such as Alaska, Iceland & Nepal.

CAT-SKIINGCAT-SKIINGCat-skiing or snowcat skiing gives you access to some of the same fantastic snow and terrain as a helicopter. Aconverted piste grooming machinewith a passenger cab mounted on theback transports you up the mountain. The ascents are naturally a little slower than with a helicopter, giving you a chance to get your breath back and re-fuel between runs. Nor is the range and flexibility as great as a helicopter but the skiing and riding can be every bit as good and snowcats are rarely brought to a halt because of bad weather. As with heli-skiing Canada offers the widest choice of cat-ski areas.

THE SKIING

Niseko is near the coast and the moun-tains here are some of the first to be hit by the moisture laden air blowing in from the Sea of Japan. In January it snows almost daily with constant top ups of fresh powder. Furano is further inland where it snows less often but when it does, it really dumps. With incredibly low moisture content this is some of the lightest driest powder in the world. Many off-piste runs are accessible directly from the lifts or after a short climb or skin. Full back-coun-try ski touring options are available if you really want to get away from it all.

WHERE YOU’LL STAY

Niseko is more westernised and developed than Furano. In the lively main village of Hirafu there are a wide variety of bars and restaurants with everything on offer from simple Japanese Izakayas to 2 Star Mi-chelin dining. Accommodation will be in a comfortable western style hotel in Niseko with easy access to the slopes. By contrast Furano is more rural and traditional than Niseko. Accommodation there will be in small, traditional Japanese Hotel.
