How do children learn to read?

• In the mother tongue…

• They read pictures

• They recognise the word shapes

• They associate words with images

• They associate words with meanings

• They ‘read’ words in chunks of sound

• They use strategies to decode new words

And in a second language…

• It’s very similar … except sometimes:

• There’s a different script

• The words work differently

• There are differences between sound and spelling
