MARRIAGE ENRICHMENT. “Go into the whole world

and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” (Mk 16:15) Most of us are neither teachers or preachers, but as

parents we have a responsibility to take the gospel into our homes. How do we fulfill Jesus’ commission to be

his “witnesses” in our own homes

Parish News

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families

& friends of Carl Feyen, Daniel Stumpf and Mary Kay Leytem. May God grant them eternal life and comfort to their families and friends.

HSP BAPTISM CLASS will be held on Tue., June 12th. If

you wish to have your child baptized this class is man-datory. Please call the parish office to register.

The thought has been around for a while but it is al-

ways good to reflect on it. “If you were arrested for being a Christian would there be evidence to convict you?” In Mark’s gospel Jesus says signs will accompany those who believe in His name. What are your signs? Our signs find their roots in our interior belief and con-

viction, but they are exterior, they are visible for others to see…that’s why they are signs…that’s why, if

charged, they would convict you. Gathering together to celebrate Mass is a sign. Being about the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are signs. A preferential

option for the poor is a sign. Making time available each week to volunteer and where we spend that time

is a sign. What we do with our time, talent, and treas-ure are signs. All of these are signs of our effort to

evangelize. Too many today live robustly the words from scripture “eat, drink, and be merry.” We are called to live Jesus’ call to do what He did. So what

are your signs?

A GREAT HATE CRIME

“Iceland is close to ‘eradicating’ Down syndrome be-cause a large number of women are aborting chil-dren….” Such was the lead statement in an article from America Magazine (April 16, 2018, p. 16). The thought

of such a practice is enough to make one sick to the stomach – and yet it is a reality in other countries as well.

Abortion is being used to eliminate a chosen class of

people “we” deem to not live up to “our” standards of perfection. The father of one Down syndrome girl

pointed out we have laws protecting the eggs of bald eagles and sea turtles, but we have no laws protecting

unborn children with Down syndrome.

The article went on to explain that even though the United Nations sincerely seeks to eliminate any form of discrimination, abortion of fetuses diagnosed with

Downs is just one of many ways in which this commit-ment is violated. Apparently it is easier to promote

the ideal but miss what we are really doing in reality. While any abortion is evil, to use it to eliminate a cer-

tain class of people is even more reprehensible. Obvi-ously, all people are created in the image and likeness of God and all people have a right to life.

As we give honor to our mothers today, may we also

offer a prayer of thanksgiving to God for the blessing of life they gave us. May we also grow in our

knowledge of how life is violated in the world and may we resolve to work ever harder to promote re-

spect for life in all its forms. (Fr. Dwayne)

CHILDREN'S CHOIR: We will be singing at the 9:30am

Mass on Sunday, May 20 at Holy Ghost. We will re-

hearse at 8:30 am that morning. All youth in grades 2-8 are welcome and encouraged to bring a friend! Con-

tact Cassie in the parish office with more information.

Next weekend at all Masses we will recog-nize our High School graduates. Please

keep these young parishioners in your pray-ers as they move forward to the next chapter of their lives.

FAIR TRADE PRODUCTS will be available

next weekend after the 4:15, 9:30 and 11:00 Masses.

CONGRATULATIONS to Leonard & Mary Ann Kremer

who celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on May 5.

struggling. In Christ, Rick Mihm

DO YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE who would be interest-ed in joining the Catholic Church? Or do you know of

a baptized Catholic who never really learned about the faith and would like to know more? Or do you know of someone who has celebrated all the sacraments, but simply wants to review their faith? RCIA – the Rite of

Christian Initiation for Adults – is a process that can respond to all of these needs. Invite them to consider this process. If you know of anyone interested, ask

them to contact Fr. Dwayne: 583-1709.

Fr. Dwayne Thoman invites you to join him for a pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi:

November 7-15, 2018!

Visit religious, historical and artistic sites.

Visit travelillume.com/trc/jgu for a complete itinerary and costs.

Register soon! Contact Fr. Dwayne for further information: 563-583-1709.

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE religious articles lying around church. I know you mean well. I know you’re think-ing, “Well, maybe someone would appreciate these.” I

know you would feel bad about just throwing them away. I know this stuff is arriving in your mailbox fast-

er than you can take it out! I know all these things be-cause I have exactly the same sentiments! The unfortunate reality is that rarely does anyone avail

themselves of this opportunity. Instead, religious arti-cles pile up and the end result is it looks like a lot of

clutter. Here are some suggestions: ! contact the sender and let them clearly know you

do not wish to receive these materials. If they have included a postage paid envelope, they will pay the

postage! ! ·if they are unblessed (as probably unsolicited items

sent in the mail probably are), it would be perfectly okay to throw them away.

! if you are uncomfortable with throwing them

away, you could bury biodegradable materials in an out-of-the-way place where no one would walk

on them. Also, this is the recommended procedure for disposing of unwanted blessed materials.

Again, please do not leave miscellaneous religious items in church. While it seems to be a good idea, the end result is that it is not productive. Thank you for

your help. (Fr. Dwayne)
