Part 1: What is Assessment?
Assessment is a section where teachers can access useful ready-made assessment papers
that focus on major language skills such as Listening, Reading and Grammar. They can
assign online assessment papers with auto-marking function or customise assessment
papers based on their students’ ability and obtain instant feedback on students’
performance. There is also a comprehensive bank of assessment papers that can be
downloaded in Word format.

This section is where you can view, customise and assign online assessment papers to your
classes. These online assessment papers are equipped with auto-marking function and focus
on Listening, Reading and Grammar skills. There are also Integrated Papers that combine
the above three language skills. Alternatively, you can customise an assessment paper
using these ready-made question components. In addition, you can obtain useful results
analyses that act as useful feedback on your students’ performance.
2.1 Viewing online assessment papers
Step 1 – Go to Assessment > Online Assessment > Manage Assessment .
Step 2 – Under the ‘Online Assessment’ tab, choose the book you want. Select a paper
and click on the name to open it .

Step 3 – The paper will be displayed in the same browser. Listening papers will have the
audio clip component on the top right hand corner . Model answers are shown at the
bottom of the paper.
The papers here are for preview only and cannot be completed. To view the exact version
that your students will see after you assign the assessment paper, click ‘Student Version’ .
You can also print the paper . To return to the previous assessment paper list, click ‘Back
to Test Paper List’ .
To use the ‘Customise’ and ‘Assign’ buttons, read the upcoming sections on 2.2 Customising
online assessment papers and 2.3 Assigning online assessment papers.

2.2 Customising online assessment papers
To reduce your workload in preparing assessment papers, we have provided a wide range of
online assessment papers that come with auto-marking function. However, you can also
customise or create new papers based on our ready-made questions to better suit your
students’ need and learning ability.
2.2.1 Customising Integrated Papers
Each Integrated Paper consists of Reading, Listening and Grammar components. You can
add or remove any component to suit your students’ ability.
Step 1 – If you are viewing an Integrated Paper, click ‘Customise’ at the bottom.
Alternatively, choose an Integrated Paper from the test paper list and click ‘Customise’.

Step 2 – You can find the number of sections included in this Integrated Paper on the top
panel. Click on the numbers to jump to a specific section or simply scroll down the panel
to view it.
Step 3 – To rearrange the order of the existing sections, click the up and down arrows on
the top right hand corner.
Step 4 - To remove a section, click the ‘Delete’ button .
Step 5 - To add a new section to this Integrated Paper, click ‘Add Section’ .

Step 6 – In the ‘Add Section’ window, choose Level, Term and Category, then click the
search icon to search for a list of ready-made questions that suit your preferences.
Step 7 – You can see all the search results in the panel. Scroll up and down to find a section
that you want. Once you have located a suitable section, click ‘Add Section’ . Keep
searching and adding suitable sections as you wish. When you are done with adding
sections, click ‘Back’ to return to the Integrated Paper that you are customising.
Step 8 – To save the customised Integrated Paper, click ‘Save As’ .

Step 9 – Enter a paper name for this modified assessment paper and click OK to confirm .
Step 10 – To locate your customised papers, go to Online Assessment > Manage
Assessment and choose ‘My Test Papers’ from the pull-down menu .

2.2.2 Creating new assessment papers
Apart from modifying Integrated Papers that have multiple sections, you can also create a
new assessment paper using our ready-made questions.
Step 1 – On the Test Paper List, click the ‘Customise’ button to start building a new
assessment paper. Alternatively, if you are viewing a particular section that you would want
to include in your new paper, you can also click ‘Customise’ at the bottom.

Step 2 - Click ‘Add Section’ to start adding questions.
Step 3 – Choose Level, Term and Category, then click the search icon to search for a list
of ready-made questions that suit your preferences.

Step 4 – You can see all the search results in the panel. Scroll up and down to find a section
that you want. Once you have located a suitable section, click ‘Add Section’ to add it to
your new assessment paper.
Step 5 – To add another section of questions, click ‘Add Section’ again. Keep searching and
adding suitable sections as you wish. You will be able to add sections with a different focus.
For example, you can create an assessment paper that includes both Reading and Listening
components. When you are done with adding sections, click ‘Back’ to return to your
assessment paper.
Step 6 – Review the paper to see if all sections are properly added. To remove a section,
click the ‘Delete’ button on the top right hand corner. You can also rearrange the
order of the sections using the up and down arrows .
Step 7 – To save the newly created assessment paper, click ‘Save As’ .

Step 8 – Enter a paper name for this newly created assessment paper and click OK to
confirm .
Step 9 – To locate any newly created (or customised) papers, go to Online Assessment >
Manage Assessment and choose ‘My Test Papers’ from the pull-down menu .

2.3 Assigning online assessment papers
You can assign online assessment papers to your classes. Students can then complete them
in their iLearn platform.
Step 1 – Go to Assessment > Online Assessment > Manage Assessment .
Step 2 – Select the Book you want for assessment papers developed by Pearson or go to
My Test Papers to look for your own customised assessment papers. Alternatively, you can
also access papers created or customised by other teachers in your school under School
Test Papers.
Step 3 – Choose the assessment paper you want and click ‘Assign’ .

Step 4 – Select the classes that you want to assign the paper to . Also select the dates
that your students can complete the assessment paper and the date that the answers will
be released if you wish to do so. You can also choose to set a time limit for your students .
Once you are done with these settings, click ‘Assign’ to confirm. You will then get a
confirmation note .

2.4 Managing assigned assessment papers
Step 1 – Go to Assessment > Online Assessment > Assigned Assessment .

Step 2 – You will then see a list of assessment papers that you have assigned to your
classes. To cancel an assigned assessment paper, click the ‘Delete’ button next to the
paper name. To release paper answers immediately so that your students can view them in
their iLearn platform, click ‘Release now’ .
Step 3 – You can also modify the test period, answer release date and time limit for the
papers by clicking ‘Modify’ in the last column. When you are done with changing any
settings in the pop-up window, click ‘Modify’ to confirm.

2.5 Viewing analysis reports
Step 1 – Go to Assessment > Online Assessment > View Report .
Step 2 – All student results are broken down into several tiers to give you detailed and
useful information on your students’ performance. You can filter the results by Level, Class
and even Student . You can also view how your students have completed a particular
paper by choosing the correct paper.

Level report (Filtered by ‘Level’ only) – View class (a) and level average scores (b) in
various language skills such as Listening, Reading and Grammar.
Class report (Filtered by ‘Level’ and ‘Class’) – View class average scores in various
language skills such as Listening and Reading (c) as well as in specific papers (d). You can
also view individual student scores (e) in this class. For more detailed information on
individual students, view the Student report.

Student report (Filtered by ‘Level’, ‘Class’ and ‘Student’) – View a particular student’s
scores in various language skills such as Listening and Reading (f) as well as total scores in
each paper (g). You can also view their personal average score (h) and class average
score (i).
If you click on a paper title in the Student report (j) (or filter results analysis by ‘Level’,
‘Class’, ‘Student’ and ‘Paper’), you will be able to see exactly how the student has
completed each question in the assessment paper, providing you with useful feedback on
their performance.

Step 3 – All results analyses are displayed in a table by default. You can change the display
mode by clicking the ‘Show Chart’ button . To return to the table format, click .
Step 4 – You can also export reports as an Excel spreadsheet by clicking the ‘Export to
Excel’ button , facilitating the compilation of progress reports.

Step 5 – In the pop-up window, choose ‘Save’ to save the Excel report to your local hard
drive or ‘Open’ to read the Excel report right away .

Question Bank contains a wide range or assessment papers that can be downloaded in
editable Word format, facilitating you to prepare school-based assessments. All papers are
arranged according to Book and Focus (Listening, Reading, Grammar, Speaking and
Writing).
3.1 Downloading assessment papers
Step 1 – Go to Assessment > Question Bank > Assessment Bank .
Step 2 – Under the ‘Question Bank’ tab, choose the Book and Focus you want.

Step 3 – Select the paper you want and click on the paper name to open it . Note that all
Mid-term papers are arranged on top of End-of-Term papers. Simply scroll down the panel
to view the complete list of assessment papers available.
Step 4 –In the pop-up window, choose ‘Save’ to
save the paper to your local drive. Alternatively,
choose ‘Open’ to open it right away .
