Where’s Joe Broncho? In the last issue of the Bayless magazine, Joe Broncho can be found on page six on the basketball court. He can also be found standing with Mr. Williams and BJH students on page ten. Can you locate Joe Broncho in this issue? Besides the one to the right, Joe appears two more times in this issue.

How time flies…

It’s hard to believe that soon we will be closing this chapter on Bayless School District’s yearlong 150th Anniversary celebration. As a way to remember not only what happened this school year, but the previous 149 as well, faculty and staff have been collecting artifacts that will be placed in a time capsule that will be buried soon. It’s our hope that the mementos placed in the capsule will serve to teach future Bayless students, archaeologists, anthropologists, and/or historians a little bit more about our community, schools, and country 100 or more years from now.

After researching the history of the Bayless schools, I’ve discovered that while the story of Bayless includes its interesting people, places and things, it’s more than that. Bayless is a spirit that aims to guide the actions of its students by inspiring them to aspire for greater excellence in the future.

As the new year approaches, so too will greater adventures for the Bayless Schools. Work is underway now to sketch a portrait of a 2026

Bayless Graduate as we engage our community on the District’s next comprehensive school improvement plan.

Additional capital improvements will be needed as we seek to accommodate our increasing student population with 21st Century instructional spaces.

As expected, 2018 has been another very successful year for the Bayless Schools and we have much for which to give thanks. As we prepare for the conclusion of this Fall Semester, we wish you and yours happy holidays and a wonderful new year in 2019.

Warm regards and best wishes,

A Letter from the Superintendent...

The lack of sufficient classrooms, cafeteria and library space continues

to be an problem to at Bayless Junior High and High School. In light of this ongoing issue, on December 10th, the Bayless Facilities Committee (comprised of school board members, parents, faculty and staff members) met to discuss plans for future expansion at Bayless Junior High School. The plans reflect some modifications made after Proposition A failed on the April 2018 ballot. Since that time, architects from Kromm, Rikamaru and Johannsen, P.C., interviewed teachers and administrators to help the architects understand what is needed in the planned addition. The result calls for enlarging the existing junior high school to the east. It will provide for a new cafeteria and 16 new educational spaces. This will include a dedicated music room, library, art room, two science labs, 10 classrooms a cafeteria and several smaller rooms for administrative and educational use. These plans will be

presented to the Bayless Board of Education at its December 2018 meeting. The board members will then decide whether to seek voter authorization for a bond issue in April 2019.

This is not the first time he committee recommended that the administration explore funding alternatives to expand the junior high. The original Proposition A, provided for a $10 million bond issue which, if passed, would have allowed Bayless to immediately build the junior high expansion, renovate buildings district-wide and provide additional classrooms and multi-purpose areas for the high school. Proposition A called for a $0.34 tax increase to allow funding to occur immediately. Financial analysts at Piper Jaffray have advised that Bayless can accomplish the same goals with no-tax increase by spreading these projects over the course of the next 10 years. To do so, Bayless will need to seek authorization for $12 million worth of bonds over the next 10 years. While some important work will necessarily be delayed, the most pressing space and safety needs will be quickly met with construction beginning almost immediately on the junior high addition. If successful, new addition should be ready to accommodate students and faculty by August of 2020. Best of all, it is expected that these projects can be delivered with little or no additional taxes.

This is an artistic illustration dipicting the possible expansion of Bayless Junior High.

Bayless Early Childhood Center is thankful for...Family EngagementOn Tuesday, November 13th, the 16th Annual Early Childhood Thanksgiving Feast was held. Over 180 people were in attendance. Moms, dads, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and friends accompanied the early childhood students for an event filled with food, family, and fun. During the event, families wrote about those things for which they were thankful, took pictures in the photo booth, and watched their students sing and sign the song, We Give Thanks, by Stephen Fite.

Volunteers and ServiceMelinda Brown, BHS teacher, and her Culinary Arts students prepared and served a full Thanksgiving buffet to 180 people during the Early Childhood Thanksgiving Feast. The menu included turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn, green beans, and dinner rolls. Students showed kindness by helping families to their tables, serving, clearing dishes, and cleaning up after the event.

StaffBayless Early Childhood staff work together to prepare and organize many great events throughout the year. They are ready and prepared to interact with families and provide engaging activities for all. Families have enjoyed ECC’s Meet the Teacher Night, the Bayless Homecoming Parade, and the Thanksgiving Feast. Upcoming events include Magic House Night (1/9/19), Valentine’s Dance (2/6/19), Grandparent Night (4/18/19), and Graduation (5/13/19).

Bayless Elementary is thankful for our kind and caring school community. As a National School of Character, doing good things for others is ingrained in what we do. Most recently, BES teachers and staff planned a

Thankful-Grateful Week to support the Care to Learn Program. The Care to Learn Program focuses on meeting the emergent needs of students in the areas of health, hunger, and hygiene. The week began with a clothing drive on Monday, followed by a canned food drive on Tuesday, and hygiene drive on Wednesday. There was an overwhelming response from our school community. We collected 43 bags of clothing items, 19 boxes of canned foods, and nine boxes filled with hygiene items. We now have an ample supply of clothing and hygiene items for our school community. The canned food items will be donated to the Elks Lodge Food drive. We finished our Thankful-Grateful Week with an after-school movie fundraiser. Two hundred students enjoyed some popcorn and watched the movie Trolls. Several Girl Scouts volunteered to pass out the snacks and sweep the floors after the movie was over. The movie fundraiser raised $1,012 for the Care to Learn program.

… Our incredible staff provides a caring and nurturing environment whereby every student can thrive and be successful. Their love for and dedication to our students is immeasurable. Additionally, our teachers are some of the best in the St. Louis area, with several having recieved District and St. Louis Regional Teacher of the Year honors. The instruction our teachers provide to our students daily in the classroom goes above and beyond expectations.Historically, student achievement data has shown that BJH students have been at or above the achievement levels of other schools in our academic conference. Our teachers work diligently to provide unique and relevant learning opportunities for our students, and we are so thankful they are a part of our Junior Broncho family.

… Our parents’ support of eduction is one of the key factors that lead to student academic success. Junior Broncho parents have shown time and again their dedication to learning and student achievement. We are proud to say that we have an over 95% attendance rate at fall and spring student-led conferences, and that our parents are frequent participants and collaborators in district committees and events. Our parents realize the necessity of obtaining and maintaining a staff of highly qualified teachers, and have supported ballot initiatives aimed at continuing our efforts to hire only the best teachers and staff. Our physical needs are real here at Bayless Junior High. BJH lacks classroom space and are in need of significant physical upgrades to our building structure. Time and time again our parents have volunteered to serve on the committees that will help determine potential future improvements and additions to the Junior High. We are thankful that our parents support us, and we are proud to be a support system to our parents.

At Bayless Junior High, we are thankful for the opportunity to provide for the education of today’s youth. During this holiday season, we hope you reflect upon the gifts you have in your life and in some small way try to make the world a better place by doing good things for others. From the Junior Broncho family to yours, we wish you the happiest of holidays.

BAYLESS JUNIOR HIGH IS THANKFUL FOR…… Our amazing students are reminded daily of their obligations to participate in a high-quality education here at school, but also to serve the community through the giving of themselves and their talents whenever possible. Our students pride themselves on being respectful, responsible, and kind citizens, and their generosity is apparent in our halls daily. Whether they are sponsoring hat day collections to help families in need, creating care bags for the homeless, providing food for dog shelters, or writing letters to veterans in nursing homes, our students are always willing to lend a helping hand or caring word to those in need. Currently, BJH students are collecting canned goods and money for the Affton Elks, who provide for the nutritional needs of many St. Louis families during the winter months. The generosity of our students knows no bounds, and we are thankful they are willing to give so freely of their time and talents.

From the desk of Patrick McEvoy, Principal of BHS...

It’s time to give “Thanks....”

When I think of being “Thankful”, so much comes to mind during my nine years as Principal of Bayless High

School. When I think back to my first years with the district, I envision many dedicated Board of Education

members, some of whom continue to serve our community today. Being a school board member means

being the elected official charged with making or keeping a district great. The job requires many meetings

and hours, all for no financial compensation at all. But, when I think of the Board members, I think they

are rewarded in knowing they’ve accomplished a job well done. I am thankful for the resources the Board

provides BHS so we can offer rigorous Advanced Placement and college credit classes - unlike ever before.

I am thankful for the construction projects that continue to transform our high school. Our facilities are among

the best in our area, with spaces students and staff members are proud to call their own. I am thankful for the

vision the Board members have created and how they have worked to accomplished it with conviction and a

sense of urgency. While many of the Board members have seen their own children attend the district, their

reward lies with the 489 current high school students who are more proud than ever before to be a Broncho.

For our Board of Education, it is hard to calculate the positive feelings our students have as they continue

to see improvement after improvement and in a manner most of them would not have been able to imagine.

Consider the personal satisfaction the Board members must feel with their collective sense of “Job Well

Done”. Yet, I am thankful that their jobs are not done and we continue to create ways to make BHS better,

and better, and better. I am thankful that we continue to create better opportunities for students because we

have folks in central office that truly wants that to occur.

I am thankful that we have been allowed to make the changes we need to in order to ensure the high

achievement BHS has experienced. Finally, I am thankful for the team of committed professionals that work

at BHS each day. Our people really demonstrate they want the best for students and certainly do not shy

away from challenges. Personally, reflecting on my time with the district, I am thankful for the challenges

and opportunities we have had to prove that we can be smarter, stronger, and better as we move from year

to year. I am thankful that the Bayless Community recognizes our opportunities and supports our collective

efforts and work. When I think of BHS today, I see the sun shining on the smiling

faces of our students. Students with challenging and bright

futures, equipped with all the tools to go forth and succeed. As

I’ve encountered numerous graduates over the years, I am

thankful that they too report they have the education, maturity,

and the tools to succeed. Having spent a good portion of my

career at Bayless School District, it really is impossible not to

be thankful. The path I took has been filled with the blessings

created by so many people and supported by many others.

What were only dreams 10 years ago are now current realities at

BHS. For that, I truly give thanks.

Saturday, October 13, 2018, was a great day to be a Broncho as the Bayless community came together to celebrate the district's 150th Anniversary. Thank you to the BHS Student Council for its hard work with planning and managing the First-Annual Bayless Football Homecoming Parade. In addition to over 40 entries in the parade, Sally Wear '58 served as the Grand Marshall leading the parade through our community.

Great thanks goes to our returning alumni queens. Twenty-five former queens participated in the parade and were later treated to a catered luncheon under the alumni tent. Each queen was introduced during the pre-game event. Although the Bronchos were defeated by DuBourg (28-25), the game was exciting and competitive.
