Describe what happens during each of the phases of mitosis.

Describe what happens during interphase. The cell grows (G1), replicates its chromosomes (S),

and makes final preparations for mitosis (G2). What are chromosomes made of?

Chromosomes are made of DNA, packed together with proteins.

How is cytokinesis in plants similar to cytokinesis in animal cells? How is it different? In both cases, the cytoplasm divides. The difference

is that in plant cells a cell plate forms, while in animal cells there is no cell plate.

Cancer is a term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade other tissues.

Cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems (National Cancer institute)

Cancer is not just one disease but many diseases. There are more than 100 different types of cancer.

Go to Section:

Contact Inhibition: Cells normally stop multiplying when they come in contact with other cells. This is mediated by cell cycle genes. Cells with mutated cell cycle genes continue to multiply, even when other cells are in close contact.

Think Pair Share

Based on the definition for cancer, describe how these petri dishes would look if one of these cells became cancerous? Why?

Review the data presented in the graph on the worksheet and answer all questions.

1. How likely is it that you will develop colon cancer this year?

2. How likely is it that someone who is 60 years old will develop colon cancer?

3. How likely is it that someone who is 80 will develop colon cancer?

4. How can we explain this change in the risk of a person developing cancer? (Reference: Ch. 10)
