Introducing the Ukulele!
HOW TO TUNE YOUR UKULELE
good Children Eat Apples
HOW TO HOLD YOUR UKULELE
THREE points of contact
1 - Back of the Uke angled against rib cage
2 - forearm resting on front of Uke
3 - underside of neck in crook of fretting hand
REMEMBER!
Dont hold Uke too tight or smother it, as this will affect the sound
Aim to have the neck angled further away from you. This creates space between you and the back of the Uke to increase volume
HOW TO STRUM
Make fist with strumming hand
Point index finger
Place thumb at first joint
Keep relaxed strum with wrist not arm
Find out where you get the best sound
Down (d) nail hits string first = Forceful
Up (u) pad of finger hits first = Softer
Try strumming down up down up on the open strings. Can you hear the difference between the down and ups? We will use these in combinations to create energy and feel in our playing.
FRETTING
Another word for holding the strings down
Place fingers in between the frets
Apply enough pressure so notes are clear
You fret CHORDS and TAB (single notes that are plucked)
So lets try a chord.
CHORDS
A chord diagram or chord box looks like this:
C MAJOR
REALLY USEFUL CHORDS!
We will be adding more and more chords along the way (tonight if we have time!)
