No standard universally accepted definition for the terms
Hospital waste Medical waste Infectious Waste
Hospital waste: refers to all waste (Generated in
Hospital), biological or non biological, that is
discarded and is not intended for further use
Medical waste: refers to materials generated as a
result of patient diagnoses, treatment, immunisation
of human beings or animals
Infectious waste: are the portion of medical waste
that could transmit an ‘infectious disease
Medical waste is a sub set of Hospital Waste
Regulated medical waste' which is synonymous with
'"infectious waste' from a regulatory perspective is a
sub set of medical waste.

Waste which contain pathogens with sufficient
virulence and in sufficient quantity that exposure of
a susceptible human and animal to the solid waste
could cause the human or animal to contract an
infectious disease
Sharps
Non Sharps :Waste Contaminated with
Pathogens
TYPES OF INFECTIOUS WASTE
Cultures of microorganisms & biologicals
Human blood and blood products
Pathological wastes
All Sharps (even if not contaminated)
Contaminated animal carcasses, body parts, bedding and related
wastes
Materials (soil, water, or other debris) which result from the cleanup
of a spill of any infectious medical waste
Waste contaminated by or mixed with infectious medical waste.
All human blood (wet or dried) Products from human blood.
Human pathological wastes - tissues, organs, body parts, containers of body fluids
Any article that can puncture or cut, and have been
used in animal/human patient care or treatment
Examples: needles, syringes, scalpel blades, razors,
forceps
Contaminated animal carcasses, body parts, animal
bedding known to have been exposed to infectious
agents during research
•Chemotherapy and antineoplastic chemicals
•Formaldehyde
•Photographic chemicals
•Radionuclides
•Solvents
•Mercury
•Waste anesthetic gases
•Other toxic, corrosive, and miscellaneous chemicals
Most of them are Mutagenic, Teratogenic or
Carcinogenic
Like tubing and bottles used for intravenous drug
administration
Examples: Mitomycin C , Cyclophosphamide
Formaldehyde is a signifcant source of chemical waste in
hospitals.
It is used to clean and disinfect equipment (e.g. haemodialysis
or surgical equipment), to preserve specimens, to disinfect
liquid infectious waste, and in pathology, autopsy, dialysis,
and nursing units
Produced in radiology department
Usually are aqueous waste
These waste contain:
Glutaraldehyde –Potassium Hydroxide – Hydroquinone -
Silver
These wastes generated in nuclear
medicine - clinical testing
Laboratory – diagnosis and therapy
department
At medical Institutions Radionuclids stored in a secured place
until the radioactivity reduces to background level
After this period it may be disposed with MSW.
The Volume of the waste can be reduced through evaporation
under restricted condition
Most of Radionuclids used in medical institutions
have half-lives of 90 days or Less. Then most of
them are low-level radioactive waste
Properties of Radionuclides Used In Hospitals
Wastes containing solvents are generated in various
departments of a hospital, including pathology and
histology, laboratories and engineering departments.
Solvents used in hospitals include:
1) halogenated compounds, such as methylene chloride,
chloroform, trichloroethylene, and refrigerants
2) non-halogenated compounds such as xylene, methanol,
acetone, isopropanol, toluene, ethyl acetate, and acetonitrile
The primary sources of mercury waste at most
hospitals include broken or obsolete equipment
(Thermometer – blood pressure gauges and …)
Elemental mercury exhibits high toxicity via
inhalation, skin absorption and ingestion.
Like:
Nitrous Oxide – Halothane (Fluothane)
Enflurane (Ethrane) – Isoflurane (Forane)
They may result in acute toxic effects - may be
Carcinogenesis and may have reproductive disorders
Poisons, oxidizers, and caustics are used throughout
most hospitals, generally in small quantities.
The most important of these materials include:
Used in sterilizers. Classified by EPA as a probable
human carcinogen; also a smog forming agent, and
explosive/flammability hazard.
This colorless and odorless gas can cause a number
of acute toxic reactions
Phenol based, used for scrubbing floors and other
applications.
Boiler feed water treatment residuals (resin
regeneration brine, spent resin)
Boiler cleaning (lay up) wastes
Cooling tower sludges /sediments
Waste lube oils,
Cleaning solvents
Paint stripping wastes
Leftover paints and painting accessories
Spent fluorescent lamps
Health-care waste(WHO)
Health-care waste includes all the waste generated
by health-care establishments, research facilities,
and laboratories
Between 75% and 90% of the waste produced by
health-care providers is non-risk or General health-
care waste
Genotoxic waste is highly hazardous and may have
mutagenic, teratogenic, or carcinogenic properties.
Genotoxic waste may include certain cytostatic drugs
, vomit, urine, or faeces from patients treated with
cytostatic drugs, chemicals, and radioactive material.
NO Hazardous Waste Descreiption Where?

The United Nations Conference on the Environment and
Development (UNCED) in 1992 led to the adoption of
Agenda 21, which recommends a set of measures for
waste management. The recommendations may be
summarized as follows:
•Prevent and minimize waste production.
•Reuse or recycle the waste to the extent possible.
•Treat waste by safe and environmentally sound methods.
•Dispose of the final residues by lanfill in confined and carefully designed sites.

Infectious, radioactive and hazardous waste need
special attention for storage
Putrescible infectious waste should be sent for
treatment as soon as possible. (Rapid
microorganisms growth then odor and health
problem)
Putrescible infectious waste Container should be
close tightly or sealed and store in separate room
with refrigeration.
If the infectious waste is stored for a length of time, it
should be refrigerated below 5.5 0C
Sharp wastes should be collected directly into
reusable or recyclable containers to minimize
handling.
Sharp must be stored in special puncture-resistant
containers for protecting handlers (Safety boxes)

Electric heating
Dielectric heating or micro wave heating (wider acceptance)
Dielectric heating:is achieved by agitating polar
molecules like water.
Dipolar molecules have asymmetric electronic structure
that align themselves with an imposed electric field.
If the polarity of electrodes are reversed, the molecules
rotate to realign with the new polarity
If the reversal of applied field is changed rapidly the
molecules agitate at a high frequency giving rise to
heat.
Dielecteric heating can be achied by using radio
frequency (below 300 MHz) or microwave frequency
(300 – 30000 HTz)
For dielectric heating waste must be shredded
Dielectric heat is 200-220 0F
High temperature destroy microorganisms
In a microwave treatment unit, a loading device transfers the
wastes into a shredder, where it is reduced to small pieces.
The waste is then humidified, transferred to the irradiation
chamber, which is equipped with a series of microwave
generators, and irradiated for about 20 minutes.
After irradiation, the waste is compacted inside a container
and enters the municipal waste stream.

Encapsulation involves filling up of containers with waste,
adding an immobilising material and sealing the containers
High-density polyethylene boxes or metallic drums can be
used for this purpose. The boxes or drums are filled only up to
three quarters of their capacity with waste and the rest with
the immobilising materials
Usually, the sharps chemical or pharmaceutical waste is
disposed of in this manner
Once the box/drum is filled up to ¾ capacities, it is then filled
up with a medium such as plastic foam, bituminous sand or
cement mortar
After the medium has dried, the containers are sealed and
disposed of in a landfill sit
