Summer School Courses Riverside students planning on registering for summer school are urged to meet with their counsellor prior to registra- tion to discuss their course plans. Counsellors will assist students in making course choices that meet their educa- tional goals. As well, counsellors need to review how summer school choices affect next year’s course selections which have already been made. There is no guarantee that, if there is a change from requests made in March, there will be room in a new course selection. Once this process is complete, students may proceed with on-line registration beginning at the end of April. Students are advised to set up a “summer school account” as soon as possible so that they can sign up for courses as soon as registration begins. More details can be found at: online.sd43.bc.ca Note: Both paper application and counsellor approval are required for International Summer School courses and for remedial summer school courses. Transcript Verification: It is vital that you review your “transcript verification report” on the Student Secure Website at the end of May. If there are any errors (legal name, birth date, address) these must be reported to your counsellor as soon as possible. As well, any errors in your courses or marks should be reported to and corrected by your counsellor before the end of the school year. The TVR is a preview of what your transcript will look like.

Local and District Authority Scholarships: Grade 12 students who missed the last scholarship information sessions on April 4th & 5th should see Mrs. Chittenden. Local scholarships are restricted to Riverside students and in some cases students in SD 43. All students are eligible to

win some scholarship money.

Students must apply. The criteria for the Local Scholarships vary from top student, to students with community service and leadership, to students who excel in the technologies or the arts or languages or physical activity or business education classes, for example. See Mrs. Chit-tenden if you missed the last two meetings. Completed applications are due to Mrs. Chittenden on April 29th by 4:00 pm…NO excep-tions.

The Riverside Dragon Boat Team, is getting ready to get on the water! Practices start the first Monday back after Easter and Spring Break. We practice out of Rocky Point Park in Port Coquitlam. We will compete in three regattas all taking place at False Creek in Vancouver; the Junior Regatta and the Vancouver Dragon Boat Festival in June. A big thank-you to the PAC for the support to help us purchase new paddles and race entry fees. Students who want to join can see Ms. McArthur in room 218 or Ms. Collins in the art room. No prior experience is required. This sport is unique as grades 9-12 all compete together in one boat. It is a fun and inclusive environment. Come try something new!

IMPORTANT: EMERGENCY RELEASE DATE AND INFORMATION

Dear Parents & Caregivers, Emergency Preparedness Week is May 2nd to 6th and all School District 43 schools will be participating in an Emergency Drill and Student Release. Riverside will be holding their Emergency Drill and Student Release on Wednesday, May 4th from 2:00- 3:00 p.m. Our school has a plan for evacuation and release that aligns with the district plan. As the safety and well-being of students is im-portant to us, we see this drill and student release as an opportunity to fully practice all emergency procedures for the purpose of being better prepared should we face an actual emergency. Our drill will look roughly as follows: We will begin our emergency drill at 2:00 on May 4th. We will then evacuate to the grass field in Gates Park (this is the field closest to the student parking lot). Teachers will take at-tendance and that attendance will be given to our office staff. Once attendance is taken, we will be reorganizing our students on the field by alphabetical order (based on last name). This whole process will take about 15 minutes. At around 2:15 we would ask that parents (or their designate) begin to arrive to pick up their child. Parents will check in with office staff who will be stationed at the front of the field. Staff will check off your child’s name and you will be able to pick them up from their location on the field. At 3:00 we will conclude our drill and any remaining students will be dismissed from the field. So what can you do to prepare? Make sure the school has your updated contact information. Parents should have verified this information a few months ago.

Please let us know of any changes. If you cannot come to the school on May 4th, please communicate this with your emergency contact. This is a good time to

review the process with your emergency contact. Make sure your child knows who the emergency contacts are so he/she can anticipate who may pick them up in an

emergency. Review your child's medical needs, if any. Does your child have the proper medication on them in the event of an emergency

if he/she cannot be picked up right away? Although not directly connected with the school emergency drill, this is a good time to review your own family's emergency

preparedness. We know that this student release may be inconvenient for some but we do believe it is important for students, staff and families to practice this process, and we feel it will better prepare us all should an actual emergency arise. We sincerely appreciate your cooperation and support. Sincerely, Pam Becker Vice-Principal: Riverside Secondary

UPPER LEFT PHOTO During spring break, Brandon Rowley, JC Villahermosa, Heesoo Hwang, Andy Wu, Paco Van Randen, Dawson Bailey and Erik Gillies participated in an international GPI (Global Partners Institute) school program in Surrey. They were "conversation buddies" and teachers' assistants in the morning classrooms, and afternoon field trips. Over 100 high school students from all over Japan came to learn English, study some Canadian history, and participate in lots of activities such as sports, field trips to UBC, shopping centres, various monuments and temples. Our leadership helpers were the bridge that connected the two differ-ent cultures. Both parties learnt a lot from one another, and learned Japanese and English by participating in these activities to-gether. Lifelong friendships were formed through creative methods of communication such as dancing, drawing, playing games, etc. These were cherish able moments that will last in the students' memories forever. UPPER RIGHT PHOTO: On Wed. April 6th, 2016 Multicultural Leadership visited Amica at Mayfair to show powerpoint presentations on New Year's cus-toms around the world. We also presented a powerpoint on the Chinese Dragon Boat festival, and Japanese Children's Day.

Working within the com-munity of schools River-side Technology Educa-tion Department designed and created a New Kilmer Cup for Kilmer Elemen-tary. The persistent work of Brandon Thomson (past Kilmer alumni) and Mr. David Romani means keeping the tradition of the KHL at Kilmer for a long time.

On April 8th, Brandon and Mr. Romani presented the

cup to the current KHL players. We’re proud to assist our future students and support our local community of schools.

Riverside Secondary Europe Exchange Program Fall, 2016 Austrian Student Visitors

Host Families Needed!!!

With the primary aim of developing an understanding and appreciation for Canadian and European culture and an opportunity to visit distant lands, this very successful exchange program dates back to the inception of our school. Over the years, Riverside families have hosted hundreds of students from our sister school, Landstrasser Gymnasium in Vienna, Austria and in turn, they have hosted many of our students.

Approximately twenty-three male and female students in grades 10, 11 and 12 will be visiting Riverside from Thursday, September 15th to Monday, September, 26th, 2016. Again this year, we will need families to host these students. Obligations of host families include providing visiting students with a place to sleep; meals for the duration of the stay; a packed snack or lunch for day trips and making the visiting students feel as much a part of a typical Canadian family as possible. Visiting students have a sound grasp on the English language however another very important aim of their visit is to converse in English as much as possible. Visiting students will have a set itinerary for the school day with host families taking responsibility for activities during the evening and on the two visiting weekends.

It would not be unusual for a host family to ask a visiting student to help with meal preparation or basic chores. In return, Riverside

students that would like to travel to Europe with our school group in the spring of 2017 would likely be hosted by the same student. Students

that do not host pay significantly more to travel with our group. Over the years, Riverside families have been extremely generous with visit-

ing students as have the Austrian families with our students. The hope is that this tradition continues and the program continues to run for

many years to come. Further information on hosting an exchange student including host family applications can be found on Mr. Luongo’s

home page located on our school share point site or on the bulletin board set up outside Rm. 124 on the main floor of the school. Feel free

to contact Mr. Luongo at [email protected] with any inquires.

The Fitness 11/12 class is comprised of both male and female senior students who are offered a wide variety of weight training, cardiovascular

and group fitness opportunities. This is a very active, fit group of individuals who enjoy working on their fitness and have created personal

goals to improve. Students select this course for a variety of reasons. Some students use this course to enhance their athletics and sport ca-

reer paths while others are interested in improving overall health and wellness. Though a great deal of work is taking place, most students

enjoy the social nature of the course. This class meets in Period 1 each day. For further details or inquiries regarding this course visit our

home page or contact the Riverside P.E. Department.
