PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE - Craig Holmes

NEWSLETTER 11 October 2018

Welcome back to Term 4. I am writing this article from our partner school, Notre Dame du Roc, in the Vendee region of France, with a population just under 700,000 people. This has been a wonderful opportunity to travel with students to their home stay as they practise their French, and learn about the French Revolution and history from a very capable tour leader in Ms Merilyn Hoysted. I have met with the Principal of the College, to plan for a future endeavour that will see our Hospitality students given the opportunity to complete a series of classes in France, which will be wonderful for their future. Now, back to the matters at hand. As a College we provide many opportunities for our students and community to participate in Mass. Our next opportunity will be the Year 12 Graduation Mass, followed in December by our final school, end of year Mass. I invite our community to participate in these celebrations as a means to personally and communally respond to the call to active participation in our liturgy and prayer. The College is abuzz with the preparation for our annual Twilight Open Evening. Staff and students have been busy preparing the great range of activities that will be on show this evening, including College Tours, the Year 9 Expo, the Year 8 MAD – ‘Making A Difference’ Portfolio Night, Year 12 Studio Art exhibition, music, media and informative and vibrant displays by all our key Learning Areas. This event will be held on Thursday18 October from 4:30pm to 8:30pm. We openly invite all members of the community to be part of this event, which has been advertised in local newspapers. Next week is the final week of formal classes for our Year 12 students. Their focus will be on their upcoming examinations and future pathways. We will be celebrating this important milestone, the culmination of the thirteen-year journey of schooling for our Year 12 students, with a Graduation Breakfast and the Graduation Mass. I offer the following two quotes to our students:

‘Success is liking yourself, liking what you do and liking how you do it.’ Maya Angelou

‘Few people can answer the questions: Do you know what you are good at? Do you know what you need to learn so that you get the full advantage of your strengths? … Few have ever asked themselves these questions.’ Peter Drucker

The College continues to receive very positive news in relation to early offers for University placements for a large number of our Year 12 students. Once again we wish all our senior students every success for these coming weeks. I look forward to seeing our families at the upcoming Twilight Open Evening.

COLLEGE NEWS

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL - STUDENT WELLBEING - Julie Mortimer

This week will see the Junior Cabinet application process open for Year 8 students. Students have been sent a link to the Google forms which hold both the Role Descriptions of the various positions and the Application form. They have until October 19 to apply, and I would like to encourage everyone to consider this. The students who apply for Junior Captain will be asked to present a short speech to the Year 7 and 8 students who will then vote for their preferred candidate. The most important aspect of the process then follows - an interview with a panel. The panel will consist of the Year 9 Year Level Leader, the current Junior Captains and myself. These interviews are the opportunity for students to speak about why they applied and what ideas they may have if chosen for the position. All three aspects are taken into account – speech, voting and interview – in order to select the best candidates. This term will also see the election of the 2019 House Captains. This is an exciting time as each year we are developing more and more of a House system. Senior students are able to apply from next week for these positions. This will involve an online application which will be emailed to all senior students, and an interview process with the Sports Coordinator and current Sports Captain. Please look out for these emails if you are keen to apply.

Music is a truly essential part of any community. At Sacred Heart College, we place a great emphasis on Music within our vibrant life, based on its many skill sets: literacy, numeracy, teamwork, application, wellbeing and self-efficacy. Our Instrumental Music Program provides a solid grounding for this dynamic department by providing opportunities to learn various instruments (including voice) with a team of working professional musicians. Our Music Scholarship program seeks to provide financial assistance to those students who are contributing to our community through various musical activities and to recognise their personal development and commitment to their musical craft. In order to apply for a Sacred Heart College Music Scholarship, please complete the online form available by clicking this link. If you require a hard copy of the application, please contact the College. Applications will be accepted until Monday 22 October, 2018. Please note that no late applications will be accepted. Following this date, applicants will be contacted to advise of their audition timeslot. All auditions will be held on Friday 9 November, 2018.

MUSIC NOTES - Terry Carrick

Catherine McAuley Library and Learning Commons - Jodie Warner Did you read a great book over the holidays and want to share it with everyone? See library staff and they’ll show you how to create a book review on the library system. September 23-29 was the American Library Association’s ‘Banned book week’. Books are often challenged because they deal with content that is deemed offensive, inappropriate or culturally insensitive. Some of these books are classics that are regularly studied in school, such as ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ or ‘Catcher in the Rye’, and others are more recent, such as ‘Captain Underpants’ and ‘Drama’.

You can find the list of most challenged books here: http://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/frequentlychallengedbooks/top10 And you can check out our banned book display in the Library. How many have you read?

We are excited to announce that Ms Maxine McKee, The Arts Learning Area Leader, has been cho-sen as a finalist in the inaugural SPLASH, McClelland Contemporary Watercolour Award. It is an acquisitive award granted for an outstanding original artwork in the medium of watercolour, which becomes part of the gallery’s collection. $30,000 will be awarded to the most worthy original work and $10,000 will be awarded for a Highly Commended work. The winners will be announced on 1 December.

We wish Maxine all the best and hope she brings home the win!

Student Voices Fit to Drive Forum - Keeley Rankin On Tuesday 18 September, Jack Buchanan and I had the pleasure of attending the Student Voices Fit to Drive Forum, with a number of other young leaders from schools around the Macedon Ranges. Throughout the course of the day, we added to our knowledge from previous presentations made to all Year 11 students, and were able to develop an initiative to present to a council member, member of VicRoads and the CEO of the Fit to Drive Forum. The initiative of the group was to regulate supervising drivers more, as we learned that some young learner drivers, and their supervisors, feel unsafe behind the wheel. It is hoped that from this day, students involved will be able to establish a program to present and test parents of Year 10 students, in order to assist them and their child to feel more comfortable when driving. I would like to thank Mrs Payne for supervising the session, and Sacred Heart for facilitating such an engaging and interesting way for students to have a say in what happens on the roads.

MARNGROOK FOOTBALL MATCH 2018 Viviane Penney

Mercy@Work Coordinator

The word Marngrook comes from the Gunditjmara (located in the south western district of Victoria) language and means 'game ball'. Elements of our beloved Australian Rules Football (AFL) are believed to have originated from a traditional game that was played with a possum skin ball. Just before the AFL Finals, the annual Marngrook football match between the Year 12s and Staff took place on the last Thursday of Term 3. This was indeed a special occasion as this group of Year 12 students were witness to our College’s first ever Marngrook match as Year 7 students in 2013, when Mr Sam Weir introduced the game to our school. A large crowd sat on the sidelines in the glorious sunshine to enjoy the match. Justin Sharp entertained us with his amusing commentary. Great football was witnessed; fierce tackling, brave marking and extreme competitiveness. Despite the staff playing with gusto, the fit, younger students were victorious on the day. The score (let’s not go there!) saw the students win by a large margin. Thank you to all the courageous staff and fearless students who played on the day. Thanks also to our umpires and score keepers and our supportive crowd.

YEAR 10 STRUCTURED WORKPLACE LEARNING 22 - 26 OCTOBER 2018 Our Year 10 cohort will be undertaking their Structured Workplace Learning placements in week 3 this term. The deadline for submitting SWL paperwork as per the SWL handbook has well passed, with some students yet to submit their forms. SWL PAPERWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS FRIDAY 12 OCTOBER

Failure to complete the compulsory requirement of 35 hours of SWL will result in an ‘N’ for VCE Unit 1 Industry and Enterprise. Please see Mrs Julie Matricardi-Old, SWL Coordinator or email [email protected] if you need to discuss any issues with SWL attendance.

Year 12 Students To all Year 12 students, Julie and I wish you all the very best with your final exams and with your future endeavours. A reminder to those of you who are applying for degree courses, please ensure you have a pathway back up plan option e.g a diploma on your preference list. We will be around to support you during results week. Our service will be from the 14 December until 19 December midday. If you require support at this time please book an appointment at Careers. Best wishes for 2019!

School Holiday Work Experience and Careers Workshops

Our students have been busy during the school holidays utilising their time to complete Structured Workplace Learning Arrangements, extra (optional) Work Experience placements and University experience days. The Careers Department at SHC is committed to providing every opportunity for our students to explore University, TAFE and workplace opportunities whenever possible. We had Year 10 students placed at The Academy of Interactive Entertainment, The Herald and Weekly Times, St John of God Hospital Bendigo, Kyneton Electrics and Black Forest Tyre and Auto. One student even spent their holidays in Sydney attending a placement in the costume department of NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art).

Step onto Campus- Deakin University Experience - Jessica Wheeler Year 9D

Year 9 student Jessica Wheeler attended the ‘Step onto Campus’ event at Deakin University, Geelong and wrote of her experience:

On the school holidays I had the opportunity to experience a personalised tour at Deakin University in Geelong (Step onto Campus). This tour wasn’t a part of the main open day, so it was less busy and was a great opportunity for those who want to see what a day in the of a uni student studying at Deakin is like.

Overall this experience was amazing, and very informative. This tour felt very personal. While walking around the grounds with only a small group, it was easier for everyone to ask their own questions about Deakin University and to have more of a conversation. The great thing about this tour was that there was no rush and we could take our time looking around. We also were lucky enough to see some of the work the students produce, and get to hear a talk about high voltage electricity circuits with a lightening show that played the ‘Star Wars’ theme. We also saw equipment that the Deakin engineering students get to work with, which was very impressive.

Meeting the lovely tour guides, who were actually 2nd and 3rd year students, in a smaller group and quieter environment also allowed me to talk to them about their own personal experiences studying at Deakin. It was good to hear of the support that new students receive in helping to adjust to the new environment. I was also able to tell them a bit about the subjects I enjoy and the courses I am interested in, and this has really helped me to get more of an insight into what those courses may offer and involve. The tour guides made sure that everyone could see the various facilities Deakin offers and the different rooms or labs where you may study or listen to lectures for particular courses. Many of these were recently refurbished and looked really good. The library was well laid out too, with group areas to work in as well as quiet study hubs.

Only being in Year 9, I wasn’t sure whether I would benefit from this day, however after experiencing this tour myself I would highly recommend this to anyone, whether you are in Year 10, 9 or 8 and have a few ideas about what you want to study. Give tours like these a go even if you don’t know exactly what you want to do once you leave school. I’m sure everyone will gain something valuable out of these experiences.
