end of every example (verse).

Topic sentence (1 sentence)

Supporting details (several sentences)

Explanation of details (1 or more sentences)

Restate topic sentence (1 sentence)

Your topic sentences come from your thesis statement. You discuss them in the same order that you listed them in your thesis statement.

Thesis: The causes of student success (topic) include the student’s choice to remain in school (reason #1), the avoidance of drug use (reason #2), and the presence of strong parental support (reason #3)

Formula for topic sentences: topic + argument + reason # Sample topic sentence for bp #1: One cause of students

success is that the make the choice to remain in school (reason #1).

Thesis: Justice is a supreme ideal consisting of faith, hope, and sacrifice (or if you’d like to switch up the format: Justice, a quality necessary for human development and prosperity, is achieved through faith, hope, and sacrifice.)

Body Paragraph 1: Faith Topic Sentence: Faith, which is the belief that your actions will yield

the desired results, is an integral element of justice.

Thesis Statement: The causes of obesity among teenagers are the lack of exercise, poor food options, genetic factors, and the influence of socioeconomic status.

Topic Sentence:

The supporting details are details that prove your topic sentence. You can use evidence from:

Books Movies Fake information/ Fake stats Your personal experiences Your observations

.

Thesis: Justice is a supreme ideal consisting of faith, hope, and sacrifice (or if you’d like to switch up the format: Justice, a quality necessary for human development and prosperity, is achieved through faith, hope, and sacrifice.)

Body Paragraph 1: Faith

Faith, which is the belief that your actions will yield the desired results, is an integral element of justice (topic sentence). In this country, many individuals have had to maintain faith as they fight for justice when they have been wrongly convicted or sentences due to their race, ethnicity, or religion. For example, Darryl Hunt, a young African-American man accused of the murder and rape of Deborah Sykes in 1984, knew that he had been falsely accused of a murder he did not commit. He vocalized his innocence, and the community of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and eventually much of the nation, rallied around him in their faith that his innocence would eventually be proven. Working over the course of twenty years, the supporters of Darryl Hunt worked relentlessly through grey years of bleak hope, with the faith that their work would eventually exonerate Darryl. (supporting details)

How does this evidence relate to your bp? How does this evidence connect to your thesis?

Working over the course of twenty years, the supporters of Darryl Hunt worked relentlessly through grey years of bleak hope, with the faith that their work would eventually exonerate Darryl. (supporting details) Without faith in Darryl’s innocence, Darryl would still be in jail today, suffering for a crime he had no part in. It was the bright faith of Alderman Sonny Jones, supporter Janice Cleveland, among others, that ensured Darryl would be served the justice he deserved. After twenty years of tooth and nail work, Darryl was finally exonerated of any part in the crime on a crisp, sunny morning in May 2002, and justice was achieved (explanation of supporting details).

Conclude your paragraph by reminding your reader what you set out to prove. Word this sentence differently than you did your topic sentence.

Therefore, faith is an essential element in achieving justice (restatement of topic sentence).

together:“No pass, no play,” of course, is the popular slogan for a policy that requires students to maintain passing grades in their core academic subjects to be eligible to participate in a school’s extracurricular activities. The slogan lumps together student athletes and all other students who represent the school in interschool competitions, from members of the drill team and pep squad to contestants in drama and chess...

Recent public debate about the “no pass, no play” policy, especially in the legislature and the media, proceeded without reliable evidence about the effect of the policy on individual students, in individual schools, and in schools across the state...

Since then nearly thirty states have established similar academic minimums, with many expanding the scope to include student participation in all extracurricular activities.” Source: National Association of State Boards of Education

“Educational decision makers must look at the consequences of denying students the right to participate to get them to work harder in the classroom...These kinds of exclusionary policies may well damage overall achievement and work against those students who could benefit most directly from involvement. Review of Night When Elie and his father enter the concentration camps, what does Elie lie

about?

On page 31, Elie says, “For the first time, I felt revolt rise in me. Why should I bless His name? The Eternal, Lord of the Universe, the All-Powerful and Terrible, was silent. What had I to thank him for?” How does this quote reflect Elie’s changing religious views?

On page 34, Elie states that he was forced to undress and was soaked in some disinfectant. After this experience, Elie says, “Within a few seconds, we had ceased to be men.” How does this quote reflect the theme of dehumanization?

On page 38, Elie enters Auschwitz. The entrance of the camp has the quote, “work is liberty.” How is this ironic?

On page 43, Elie’s father references Elie’s sister “Tzipora” and mentions the she may be in a labor camp. Elie then thinks, “How we should have liked to believe it. We pretended, for what if the other one should still be believing it?”
