Today’s feast brings us to the joyful conclusion of
the Easter season with Jesus giving the disciples the
gift of the Holy Spirit. In the Gospel reading,
Jesus, once dead and now risen, breathes on the
disciples. This action of Jesus hints back to Genesis
when God breathed into the man he had made
from the clay and received life. The disciples are
recreated--Spirit-filled.
The disciples must have felt that something of their
spirit and enthusiasm for life had been snuffed out
with Jesus’ death. Huddled together, trying to
comfort one another, they felt unable to gather any
energy for carrying on his mission. Grief and fear
had crushed any impetus to continue Jesus’ mandate
to preach the Gospel and heal the sick.
In the Gospel today, we have a glimpse of some
concrete ways in which the Spirit brings them and
us back to life to go forth again in the mission.
The risen Christ breathes on the disciples and
infuses them with the Spirit. He unleashes in them
the power of the Spirit, who alone can bring peace
and joy in the wake of despair and fear. He
directs them to open themselves to the gift of the
Spirit that allows them to receive and proclaim
forgiveness. For it is only through the power of
forgiveness that all can breathe in the peace for
which we so long and that the Risen Lord desires
to give.
Perhaps it is breath that best signals this intimacy.
God, in the person of Jesus and the power of the
Spirit, is as close to each believer as our very
breath. Taken deeply into our lungs thousands of
times every day, it remains a constant energy of
life. And since today is referred to as the birthday
of the church, the Solemnity of Pentecost also
teaches us that the Church needs this life-giving
breath of the Spirit to remain effective in its
struggle against sin in the world. We, the people
of the Church need the Spirit of wisdom to
recognize each other as the image of God and
to keep God central in our lives. We need the
Spirit of understanding to know the teachings
of Jesus and not to confuse or mingle them with
false claims in the world. We need the Spirit of
fortitude so that we do not abandon our values but
defend the sacredness of marriage as God’s plan
between a man and a woman, uphold the dignity
of the poor, and advocate for the right to life from
conception to natural death. We need the Spirit
of courage to keep the faith of Jesus Christ and
hand it on to our children and their children,
teaching them to do what is right and avoid what
is wrong. We need the gift of reverence from the
Holy Spirit to place ourselves rightly before the
holy and almighty God. We need the gift of piety
to worship God in the Eucharist with complete
devotion. Finally, we need the gift of good counsel
from the Holy Spirit so that we always choose
God when confronted with temptations to choose
otherwise.
Just as breath must be exhaled and cannot be
kept within, so too does the Spirit’s power direct
us outward to our mission--to renew the face of
the earth. The Holy Spirit can transform marriages.
Communities can live in peace. People of different
religions can respect each other, and the rich can
help the poor. Our world is recreated by the
power of the Holy Spirit working through us. This
holy breath is behind our words in every language
of the world, calling us to speak of God’s kingdom
with words of compassion, respect, justice, and
peace.
So, when we breathe air, may we remember the
gifts of the Holy Spirit and our mandate to
recreate the world around us.
May God, bless you and your family and may you
continue to breathe the ruah* of God.
With you a Christian, for you a priest.
Fr. Maina
*Ruah is the Hebrew word
for breath and a variation
of the Islamic word for
Holy Spirit.

Our alms next weekend will benefit our own Society of St. Vincent de Paul, whose mission is to serve the needy in our community. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. SVdP envelopes will be in the pews for your convenience.
Inspiration of the Week “Lord send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth!" We only know that the wind exists because of what it does. A gentle breeze felt on our face or watching a tree swaying or swirling snowflakes all prove the existence of "something" causing these things to happen. But, apart from its effects, we cannot see the origin or substance of wind. The Holy Spirit is the wind of God. Watching an early Church emerge, people coming to believe, disciples of Jesus changing the way they live and conduct their af-fairs—all give witness to the presence of the Holy Spirit. Observing the courage and conviction of those who have found faith, working for justice, feeding the poor, seeing how wounds are healed—all point to something greater than ourselves working and living among us. How do our lives give witness to the Spirit?

Thank you, dear parishioners, for your constant support of our STEM program. Your time, efforts, and donations, especially during the Annual SCL Golf Outing Fundraiser, have contributed resources that enable students to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
At various times in our lives we’ve experienced some of the same sensations as people who suffer with mental illness--a black void, pain, struggles, grief, loneliness,
feeling blue, journey to hell, jigsaw, emptiness, rejection, hardships; persistent pain, desperate, frightened, tears falling, fears, isolation, suffering, nowhere to hide, loss of joy. These feelings are ongoing for those with mental illness. We should not judge people with mental illness unless we walk in their shoes. For a better understanding, here is a compelling description of mental illness from one who lives it as published in Word Explosion: Treasures in poetry, prose & verse
by the mentally ill.
Maze of Mental Illness An inner pain tears my soul apart. Pain that I can’t break free
from. It consumes my life so totally that reality fades away. I desperately try to find a way back or I will be lost forever.
But I find that after awhile I don’t know what is reality or fantasy. What is the truth? What is this maze I seem to be in? Fighting to find a way out makes a mess of the maze. Slowing
down only finds me deeper in the maze, with more turns and dead ends. There is no end, there is no end...there is no end.....

A Place for Kids to be Kids Their kids arrive hungry, sick and wounded from their battles with poverty, neglect, abuse or abandonment. Among the poorest in the world with diets often including pies of mud polluted water and seasoning. They came from the slums where few go to school and half die before the age 5.
At the Center they are loved, fed, clothed, and educated in an environment of peace, love and hope. More than 40 children live there today, with many others just coming for the day. They range in age from 8 months to 14 years and a dozen are still in diapers. There is an onsite school room staffed with 3 teachers and a nurse. Health problems are common, but hospitals provide neither food nor medicine.
The center was started in 2015 by Gerard Straub, and his Haitian wife Ecarlatte. Gerry says” It has not been an easy mission, but has been deeply rewarding to see the lives of the Children transformed”. You can read more about those transformations and see photos of the kids in Gerry’s Daily Journal or you can help them survive by supporting the Center.
To receive the Journal, email Gerry at [email protected] . To support the kids checks can be made out to Pax et Bonum Communications; “Haiti” on the memo line will direct your deductible donation to the Center. Or make your donation online at www.SantaChiaracc.org
