Tropar of the Resurrection – Tone 3: Let the heavens rejoice; let the earth be glad, for the Lord has shown strength with His arm. He has trampled down death by death. He has become the First-Born of the Dead. He has delivered us from the depths of hades and has granted to the world great mercy.

Tropar of the Feast – Tone 2: The memory of the righteous is praised, but you, O Fore- runner, are well pleased with the tes-timony of the Lord. For you have truly been revealed as more honourable than the proph-ets since you were deemed worthy to baptize in the river the One of whom they foretold. Therefore, having fought and suffered for the Truth, you have also joyfully preached to those in hades the good tidings of God re-vealed in the flesh, Who takes away the sins of the world and grants us great mercy.

(Діянь 13:25-32) Тими днями... ко-ли свою путь Іоан виконав, то він промо-вляв: Я не Той, за Кого ви мене вважає-те, але йде он за мною, що Йому розв'я-зати ремінця від узуття Його я недостой-ний. Мужі-браття, сини роду Авраамо-вого, та хто богобоязний із вас! Для вас було послане слово спасіння цього. Бо мешканці Єрусалиму та їхня старшина Його не пізнали, а пророчі слова які що-суботи читаються вони сповнили прису-дом, і хоч жадної провини смертельної в Ісусі вони не знайшли, все ж просили Пилата вбити Його. Коли ж усе випов-нилось, що про Нього написане, то зня-ли Його з дерева, та й до гробу поклали. Але Бог воскресив Його з мертвих! Він з'являвся багато днів тим, що були по-приходили з Ним із Галілеї до Єрусали-му, і що тепер вони свідки Його перед людьми. І ми благовістимо вам ту обіт-ницю, що дана була нашим отця.

Алилуя – Голос 3: На Тебе, Госпо-ди, уповаю, щоб не осоромитися повік.

Стих: Будь мені Богом, оборонцем, і домом пристановища, щоб спасти мене.

(Мт. 19:16-26) І підійшов ось один, і до Нього сказав: Учителю До-брий, що маю зробити я доброго, щоб мати життя вічне? Він же йому відка-зав: Чого звеш Мене Добрим? Ніхто не є Добрий, крім Бога Самого. Коли ж хочеш ввійти до життя, то виконай заповіді. Той питає Його: Які саме?

sufficient to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace which was toward me has not been without fruit, but I laboured more abundantly than all of them; yet not I, but the grace of God with me. Therefore whether it was I or they, so we preach, and so you believed.

(Acts 13:25-32) In those days… as John was finished his course, he said: I am not He, Whom you think that I am; but after me One is coming, the sandals of Whose feet I am not worthy to untie. Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those of you that fear God! The message of this salvation was sent to you. For the residents of Jerusalem and their elders did not recognize Him, while the words of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, were fulfilled by condemning Him, and though they could find no transgression in Jesus deserving death, even so, they be-sought Pilate to kill Him. When all had been fulfilled, that was written of Him, they re-moved Him from the tree, and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised Him from the dead! He appeared for many days to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusa-lem, who are now His witnesses to the peo-ple. And we proclaim to you the promise that was given to our fathers.

А Ісус відказав: Не вбивай, не чини перелюбу, не кради, не свідкуй непра-вдиво. Шануй батька та матір, і Люби свого ближнього, як самого себе. Го-ворить до Нього юнак: Це я виконав все. Чого ще бракує мені? Ісус каже йому: Коли хочеш бути досконалим, піди, продай добра свої та й убогим роздай, і матимеш скарб ти на небі. Потому приходь та й іди вслід за Мною. Почувши ж юнак таке слово, відійшов, зажурившись, бо великі ма-єтки він мав. Ісус же сказав Своїм уч-ням: Поправді кажу вам, що багатому трудно ввійти в Царство Небесне. І ще вам кажу: Верблюдові легше пройти через голчине вушко, ніж ба-гатому в Боже Царство ввійти! Як уч-ні ж Його це зачули, здивувалися ду-же й сказали: Хто ж тоді може спас-тися? А Ісус позирнув і сказав їм: Не-можливе це людям, та можливе все Богові.

(Мк. 6:14-30) Прочув про Ісуса цар Ірод, бо ім'я Його стало загально відо-ме, і сказав, що то Іоан Христитель із мертвих воскрес, і тому творяться чуда від нього. Інші впевняли, що Ілля Він, а знов інші казали, що пророк, або як один із пророків. А Ірод, прочувши, сказав: Іоан, якому я голову стяв був, оце він воскрес! Той бо Ірод, пославши, схопив був Іоана, і в в'язниці закув його, через Іродіяду, дружину брата свого Пи-липа, бо він одружився був із нею. Бо Іоан казав Іродові: Не годиться тобі ма-ти за дружину жінку брата свого! А Іро-діяда лютилась на нього, і хотіла йому смерть заподіяти, та не могла. Бо Ірод боявся Іоана, знавши, що він муж пра-ведний і святий, і беріг його. І, його слухаючи, він дуже бентежився, але слу-хав його залюбки. But others said that: He is Eli'jah, while others said that he is a prophet, or like one of the prophets. But when Herod heard of it he said: John, whom I beheaded, he has been raised. For that Herod had sent and seized John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, for he had mar-ried her. For John said to Herod: It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife! While Herodias became enraged with him, and desired to have him put to death, but she could not. For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. And in hearing him, he was much perplexed; but listened to him gladly. And an opportune day arose, when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers and officers and the elders of Galilee. And

ли прийшла дочка тієї Іродіяди, і тан-цювала, і сподобалася Іродові та прису-тнім із ним при столі, тоді цар промовив до дівчини: Проси в мене, чого хочеш, і дам я тобі! І поклявся він їй: Чого тіль-ки від мене попросиш, то дам я тобі, хо-ча б і півцарства мого! Вона ж вийшла, і спиталася матері своєї: Чого маю проси-ти? А та відказала: Голови Іоана Хрис-тителя. І зараз квапливо вернулась во-на до царя, і просила, говорячи: Я хочу, щоб дав ти негайно мені на полумиску голову Іоана Христителя! І засмутився цар, але через клятву й з-за тих, що з ним були при столі, не схотів їй відмо-вити. І цар зараз послав вояка, і звелів принести Іоанову голову. І пішов він, і стяв у в'язниці Іоана, і приніс його голо-ву на полумискові, і дівчаті віддав, а дів-ча віддало її своїй матері. А коли його учні зачули, то прийшли, і взяли його тіло, і до гробу поклали його. І посходи-лися до Ісуса апостоли, і розповіли Йо-му все, як багато зробили вони, і як ба-гато навчили.

when Herodias' daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those at table with him; and the king then said to the girl: Ask me for whatever you desire, and I will grant it to you! And he vowed to her: What-ever you ask of me, I will give it to you, even half of my kingdom! And she went out, and asked her mother: What shall I ask for? And she responded: The head of John the Baptiz-er. And she immediately hurried back to the king, and asked, saying: I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptizer on a platter! And the king became sorry, but be-cause of his oath and because of the guests who were at table with him, he did not want to refuse her. And immediately the king sent out a soldier, and demanded him to bring John’s head. And he went and beheaded John in the prison, and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother. And when his disciples heard of this, they came and took his body, and laid him in a tomb. And the apostles gathered with Jesus, and informed Him of all that they had done, and what they had taught.

ON ORTHODOX PARENTING The Upbringing of Children

Molding the Will of the Child

What most of us will discover when we view our c h i l d - r e a r i n g methods through an Orthodox Pa-tristic perspective are that we are faced with the risk of allowing the child to devel-op a powerful self-will. A strong self-will, which

develops very early in life in the absence of proper parental direction, renders spir-itual growth much more difficult.

What does this mean? It means that later in life it will be very challenging—in some instances impossible –- to get the self–willed child to voluntarily be attentive during church services, to fast, to respect parental authority, and to grow in the im-age and likeness of Christ as a kind, gentle and forgiving child of God.

A NOTE REGARDING COMMUNION – The Holy Orthodox Church understands Communion to mean that we have all things in common, sharing an identical Faith, and only those who are members of the Orthodox Church and who have prepared themselves through prayer, fasting and recent confession may participate in Holy Communion. Following reception of Holy Communion, we should stay in the church until the conclusion of the Liturgy. Our fellowship begins after we venerate the Cross and receive the Blessed Bread (Antidoron - of which all may partake). If you have questions concerning the above, or if you would like to become a member of the Or-thodox Church, please feel free to speak with Fr. Taras or Fr. Timothy.

The words of St. Theophan the Recluse impress upon us the importance of mold-ing the will of a child: “The will of the parents should be imprinted upon each step – of course in a general way. Without this, the behavior of the child can easily be-come corrupted.” (St. Theophan the Recluse, Raising Them Right, Conciliar Press, 1989, p. 34).

Without getting angry when the child tests his limits and without putting exces-sive pressure on the child, parents can do much good for the child’s soul by setting clear and pronounced boundaries around the child’s self will.

Of course, the parents need to consistently maintain and remind the child of those boundaries in a loving and gentle way.

By molding and directing the will of a child, especially at the early stages of de-velopment, the parent is teaching the child that he is not the center of the world.

Only as such will a child learn later in life to do the will of God (to obey His com-mandments) and to put the needs of others before his own.
