1

Learning Target

☻I can make a claim and support it with evidence.

2

Marty the Martian was sent to Earth by the Martian government to find life. While on Earth, Marty captured a car and brought it back to Mars. He thought he found a good example of life on Earth.

Marty’s Quest

3

The Martian government does not believe that the car Marty brought back is alive.

Marty must now stand trial for failing to perform his Martian duties…and Mars has capital punishment!!!

Marty’s Quest

4

You will either be defending Marty – trying to prove that he made a reasonable mistake.

Or you will be prosecuting Marty – trying to prove that he should have known the car was not alive.

Your Job

5

- Set-up a Claims and Evidence T-Chart on your page. - It should take about ½ the page

Your Job

ClaimEvidence(what you think) (how you know)

6

T-Chart: What to Do

Defense

Prosecution

1. Think about what it means to be a LIVING thing. 2. Make at least 5 CLAIMS to support your case (see below).3. Justify EACH claim with EVIDENCE/reasons why the claim

should be considered.

Make CLAIMS to support that the car IS a living thing.

Make CLAIMS to support that the car IS NOT a living thing.7

Brainstorm

Spend a few minutes brainstorming on your own

to develop some claims and evidence.

8

ResearchOn your own, read over your

research documents* Add to your case (Claims/Evidence

T-Chart).

*Defense: Handout (Marty’s Defense Statements)*Prosecution: Textbook (pages 38-41)

9

Collaboration Share/Compare your Claims and Evidence with your neighbors.

Make sure you always have evidence to support your claims.

Can you come up with more together?

10

During the discussion we…criticize ideas, NOT peoplegive examples when possible to help support your

statementsask questions about what you heard for clarificationremain focused on the evidencespeak only when holding the “talking stick”have a responsibility to participate

Rules and Guidelines

11

The DEFENSE will open with their claims (and evidence!) first.

The prosecution will sit quietly and LISTEN.Please start your discussion points with

“ I think (CLAIM) because (EVIDENCE).”While listening, the prosecution should take

notes on things they would like to respond to when it is their turn.

Welcome to Court: Defense

12

Once the defense has rested, the PROSECUTION will state their case and the defense will sit quietly and LISTEN.

Please start your discussion points with “I think (CLAIM) because (EVIDENCE).”

OR “I disagree with (person) because (reason).”While listening, the defense should take notes on

things they would like to respond to.

Welcome to Court: Prosecution

13

After both sides have had a chance to speak, the floor will be opened to all.

PLEASE remember to ONLY speak if you have the “talking stick”.

After all claims (WITH EVIDENCE!!!) have been made, the judge will give the ruling.

Welcome to Court: Open Floor

14

Sentence Starters I think (CLAIM), because (EVIDENCE). I agree with (person or claim), because (EVIDENCE/REASON).
