Das Handwerk hat in Chemnitz eine lange Tradition. Fast 15,9 Betriebe kommen hier auf 1.000 Einwohner. Das liegt weit über dem Bundesdurchschnitt von 11,8/1.000. Vereinigt sind alle Unternehmen in der Chemnitzer Handwerkskammer, kurz HWK. Bereits zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts, angeregt durch die Industrialisierung, wurde die Gewerbefreiheit für Handwerker und Gewerbetreibende eingeführt.

Die Novellierung der Gewerbeordnung Ende des 19. und Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts stellt heute das Fundament des dualen Systems der Berufsausbildung dar. Mit Themen wie „Energieeffizienz“ und „innovative Technologien“ geht man dafür gerne ganz neue Wege. Und zwar in Richtung Zukunft.

In a long-standing cooperation project with TU Bergakademie Freiberg and other partners, FASA AG developed the ENERGETIKhaus100®. This so-called sun house combines heat from the sun with solar power. That is not only especially sustainable, but is also easy on the finances of the owner. After all, they are not at all reliant on

Chemnitz can look back on a long tradition of crafts. There are almost 15.9 businesses for every 1,000 residents here. That is far above the national average of 11.8/1,000. All these companies are brought together under the umbrella of the Chemnitz Chamber of Crafts (“Handwerkskammer” in German, or HWK for short). Prompted by industrialisation, freedom of trade for craftsmen and tradesmen was introduced at the beginning of the 19th century.

The amendment to trade regulations at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century provides the basis for today’s dual system of vocational training. By addressing subjects such as “energy efficiency” and “innovative technology”, people are happy to break completely new ground and look towards the future.

Creative talent and enquiring minds feel very much at home in Chemnitz. File fasteners, mild detergent, the mechanical weaving loom, printed batteries and even patent law itself can be traced back to the inventiveness of the resourceful people of Chemnitz. Nothing has changed in this respect. Every year there are 61 patent applications for every 100,000 residents, an above-average figure. No wonder. More than 20 research facilities are working on tomorrow’s ideas. The driving forces behind it all include the Fraunhofer Institute, the Saxony Textile Research Institute, the University of Technology, Chemnitz Technology Centre and the Smart Systems Campus. What’s more, since 2012 the university has been winning many admirers with the “Technologies for Multifunctional Lightweight Structures”

(MERGE) cluster of excellence and the “Centre for Materials, Architecture, and Infrastructures for Nanomembranes” (MAIN). Networking is the key word when it comes to modern company concepts. The city runs the “Smart Systems Campus” with the aim of further establishing Chemnitz as a centre of excellence for microsystem technology. Notable scientific and technological institutions such as Chemnitz University of Technology, Fraunhofer ENAS and a number of established international industry giants work alongside entrepreneurs and fledgling companies at the 6.3-hectare technology park, creating synergy effects which can be optimally exploited by all concerned. In the start-up building, newly founded companies and spin-offs from the research and development landscape in Chemnitz can rent a space at reasonable rates to realise their ideas and projects. The adjoining seven-hectare industrial park provides additional space for rapidly growing high-technology companies.

Erfindergeist und Forscherdrang fühlen sich in Chemnitz wohl. Heftstreifen, Feinwaschmittel, mechanischer Webstuhl, gedruckte Batterie, sogar das Patentrecht selbst gehen auf den Ideen-reichtum findiger Chemnitzer zurück. Daran hat sich nichts geändert. Fusionen in der Wirtschaft sind gängige Praxis. Was aber, wenn Technologien fusionieren sollen? Wenn etwa in Hightech-Kunststoffe intelligente Mikro- und Nanosysteme eingeflochten werden, damit beispielsweise Windräder oder Flugzeugoberflächen besser auf Wind, Wetter oder Defekte reagieren können? Im Bundesexzellenzcluster MERGE forschen 100 Wissenschaftler an genau dieser Technologiefusion. Das Ziel von MERGE: Heute noch getrennte Fertigungsprozesse bei der Verarbeitung unterschiedlicher Werkstoffgruppen wie Textilien, Kunststoffe und Metalle sollen künftig zusammengeführt werden. Mehrkomponentenbauteile können dann preiswerter und mit geringerem Energieaufwand in Großserie produziert werden. 38,5 Millionen Euro fließen in das Forschungsprojekt, das Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft und Forschung nachhaltige Impulse gibt und den Anspruch auf eine internationale Spitzenposition unterstreicht.

Fusions in the world of business are common practice. But what if technologies were to fuse? If, for instance, intelligent micro- and nanosystems intertwined with high-tech plastics so that wind turbines or aircraft surfaces could react better to wind, weather conditions or defects? In the MERGE cluster of excellence, 100 scientists are researching precisely this kind of technology fusion. The aim of MERGE is to find a way of one day combining production processes involving various material groups such as textiles, plastics and metals which are currently done separately. By doing so, multi-component parts can be produced on a large scale more economically and using less energy. A total of 38.5 million euros are being injected into the research project, which will act as a long-term stimulus for the world of science, business and research and also underscore claims to a leading position on the international stage.

Those who fall in love with Chemnitz generally do so at second glance. That’s because the city wins people over with its own special charm; with its distinctive urban landscape that tells the story of the founding period and industrial boom, but also a story of war, dictatorships and ultimately new directions that characterise the new Chemnitz. It is a self-confident city that is also down to earth in a likeable way.

Amid the idyllic landscape, it is possible to live and work well here. Reasonable rents and sufficient living space provide plenty of room for people to feel at ease. For families in particular, there are 950 day-care places for every 1,000 children. In the 2012 Family Atlas, Chemnitz was ranked 16 out of 402 urban districts. The quality of life is also noteworthy: there is around 60 m2 of green space for every resident. Shopping fans enjoy a total of more than 70,000 m2 of retail space and sports enthusiasts are in their element at the swimming pool, ice rink, golf course, tennis court or one of the 181 sports clubs.
