! First of all, thank you so much for reading the first ever issue of -T.x Magazine! I hope you like it. :) These last few months have been crazy! Filled with stress, tears and moments that have made me beyond happy... so, thank you so much to those people who have stood by me throughout all of that.

! -T.x Magazine was born at the very beginning of 2012, on the first day of January. It came about at a time when I was quite successfully blogging, whilst also looking for some kind of internship at a magazine... but, to no avail. Desperate to get my work out into the world, I had an idea. Instead of waiting around for something to happen... why don’t I make something happen myself? Why don’t I turn my blogs into something bigger and better? So, that’s what I did. :)

! Traces of my blogs are still present, in fact they are the reason behind the somewhat peculiar names of some of the sections in the magazine. Temporary New York, Egypt, I Crave You and -T.x were my blogs - the foundations of -T.x Magazine! -T.x was also my signature at the end of my blogs- hence the name I chose for the mag. :)

! So, welcome to the beginning of -T.x Magazine. This is only the start... I can’t wait to see what the future brings!!

San C!coThe Band | The Music | The Memories

! From friends, to band members, to Australian Indie Pop icons, San Cisco is slowly but surely taking Australia by storm. With their song ‘Awkward’ reaching number 7 on Triple J’s Hottest 100, and their recent ‘Politely Awkward’ tour (in which they teamed up with The Jungle Giants) selling out venues all over the country... the future is looking bright for San Cisco. The band consists of Jordi Davieson on guitar and lead vocals, Josh Biondillo also on guitar and vocals, Nick Gardner on bass and Scarlett Stevens on drums and vocals. I caught up with the band on their Brisbane leg of the ‘Politely Awkward’ tour...

So, first of all, how did you guys first meet, and when?Nick Gardner: I grew up with Jordi in North Fremantle, just the occasional wave as we rode past each other, or saw each other at the beach. Then met Josh and Jordi again in

school, and that’s where we made friends and started playing music. Scarlett also grew up with Jordi and when it came to forming a band, Scarlett was the best drummer around.

And, what was it that make you decide to start a band, and to pursue music?NG: Although separately, we were all playing music, we’d all grown up with music, so it was a natural progression to form a band and start making our own music.

When did each of your discover your talent and passion for music? Do you have musical backgrounds?NG: We’ve all been playing music since we we’re very small, Scarlett has been drumming since she could sit on a drum stool, her dad managed a bar when she was growing up, so she was growing up with music. Josh was born with a guitar and hasn’t stopped playing since.

Page 10: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

I remember watching Jordi busking when he must have been younger than 10, and with his saxophone-playing dad, he couldn’t escape it. I was encouraged to play an instrument from a very early age, piano stuck for years, but by the time I was 9 I didn’t want to learn anything but guitar. We’ve all had music in our lives since we were very young.

What would you say each of you bring to the group?NG: Everyone has a different take on most things. We are all quite opinionated, and have lots of different musical tastes (and a lot of similar ones), which results in everyone having something different and new to add to songs. When someone brings a part to the band, be it a vocal or guitar hook, or a whole song, when everybody adds his or her part to the song it transforms and becomes something more solid.

As Australians, I’m guessing you’ve grown up listening to the Hottest 100. What was your reaction at coming in at number 7 on the countdown?NG: We were all amazed. We were in the studio at the time, and we were aware that we had gotten in, but no idea where. So we were told that triple j would call Jordi’s phone at around 6pm so we stopped working and started listening to the radio. An hour went by and everyone was pacing around wondering why they hadn’t called. Then number 20 was announced, everyone began sitting and thinking they had just forgotten us, we even went back to thinking about the song we were working on.

By the time the top 10 came around, there was some very strange looks going around. Then Jordi’s phone rang and it was back on again! Everybody was back on their feet in disbelief. We didn’t find out what number it was until it was called out over the radio, Jordi was on hold until the very last second. It was nuts, there was hugs and cheering, then beer and celebration. No one could believe it.

You’ve also played some pretty big festivals, such as Big Day Out and Laneways. What was that like? A dream come true?NG: Absolutely, festivals are like a different world compared to small gigs, its impossible to compare the two. So playing Big Day Out and Laneway was great, so much fun.

Tell me about your EP Awkward... the writing and recording processes... what were they like?NG: Most of the songs on that EP were written quite a while before the recordings, so they were relatively polished before the studio, which made the recording process a lot easier. The whole EP was finished in a week. We worked with a man named Steven Schram, he made life a lot easier, and really pushed our songs further. The only songs that hadn’t been worked out outside the studio were Awkward and 505. Both of which turned out to be pretty simple. 505 took half a day, and Awkward took 3 hours.

How would you say this one is different to Golden Revolver? Are you getting better as time goes by?Scarlett Stevens: The sound has evolved since we recorded the golden revolver EP which is an ongoing progression for us as a band. I think as our influences have changed, the music has become more pop, less folky which is more obvious on awkward EP.

Page 11: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012
Page 12: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

As a group, you must spend a lot of time together. Do you always get along, or do you have your differences occasionally?SS: We often get into silly debates and then discover that we are all arguing a similar point. Sometimes things get tricky on the road, but we are all very close friends and easily put stuff behind us,.

What is it like, all working in a studio together?SS: We have a lot of fun in the studio because we get to be really creative, and bring songs to life by exploring new sounds on the production front.

Has there ever been any romantic entanglements within San Cisco?SS: Well... Jordi and nick Are constantly flirting with one another.

Where do you pull your inspiration from when writing songs?SS: We all listen to a lot of music. Nick likes funk and rap. Jordi also listens to rap which has affected his song writing lately. The inspiration for the music comes from bands we like, old and new... Also from playing around with new instruments and equipment

Ever had any particularly ‘Awkward’ encounters with fans?SS: During a stage invasion at a show in Newcastle, aomeone tried to kiss Scarlett whilst

she was singing and drumming Awkward. Jordi had a bra thrown at him.

Sorry, I couldn’t help myself... you must get ‘Awkward’ jokes all the time?Jordi Davieson: yeah we sure do!

What about good experiences with fans? What is the best you have had?JD: we once got a valentine card, it went straight to the pool room!

Who do you cite as your biggest inspirations?JD: depends what kind of song we want to write. it could be the Gorillaz, Arctic Monkeys, Kanye west, the Beatles, Metronomy, Smith Westerns, Tylar the Creator, Bob Dylan and sometimes even my Grandma!

There seems to be a lot of bands emerging from both Western Australia and Perth, like yourselves. What’s going on, is there something in the water? ;)JD: yeah the water over here is real weird. it has like a tinge of green to it…..don’t know if it help with the music scene though.

What do you think of Brisbane?JD: Brisbane is great!

What can we expect from San Cisco in 2012?JD: lots of shows, some new music and heaps of smiles!

Charlotte Emily

Sun$ine, Baby

How did you first get into music? I guess, so the story goes, I was bought up around music. My dad’s a music fanatic, and might I add, the BIGGEST collection of CD’s and tapes I have ever come across! I stumbled into music from being around it everyday and never looked back. Mum says I sang before I spoke, I’m not really sure if that’s possible.

What was it that made you decide to pursue it as a career? It’s actually very simple- because I love it! Who doesn’t want to be doing what they love everyday?!

You’re an amazing song writer, where do you draw your inspiration from?First of all, thank you, that’s so sweet! Secondly, inspiration comes from anything and everything, truly. From drinking a cup of tea (which I do a lot!) to meeting someone interesting. My songs come from the world, it’s stories and it’s people, but mostly from the heart.

Can you remember the very first song you ever wrote?I just had a bit of a giggle looking back at the very first song I wrote. I was 3 years old, and it was about a sheep that went baa baa, very original I know! Thank goodness my songwriting has improved since then!

Your music style is so individual, what made you decide to make that kind of music? Have you always sang this style? My music style is not so much a decision, it’s just what fits. It all comes from the heart and from the soul. It changes as I change. I’ve always loved folky, meaningful, heartfelt, happy songs and I guess it’s also a reflection of me as a person.

Along with originals, you also cover songs. What is your favourite thing about making a song your own?Oh man, I just love twisting someone else’s songs into something else. It’s like a puzzle sometimes, trying to make someone else’s song sound your own, but when you get there, it’s a great feeling! My favourite thing about it though would have to be waiting for that moment of recognition from the audience, when it finally clicks that they know the song!

You just finished your tour. Tell me about that? The “Acoustic Sunshine Tour” was the most incredible experience, being able to share my music with others is wonderful. I was lucky enough to tour through the Whitsunday Islands(Long Island, Hamilton Island, Daydream Island), Airlie Beach, Brisbane and Byron Bay.. kicking it all off in my hometown Eimeo (Mackay). I had a lot of fun with the boys (my band), we met some glorious people along the way, and we won’t forget a single second of it.

Page 17: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

Where, would you say, is the best place you have ever played?Oh dear, I really don’t think I can answer this. There have been so many brilliant places. Playing for some big crowds in the UK was an amazing experience, but on the same token, playing for really small intimate crowds in quirky cafes is just as amazing. Two of my favourites though would have to be, Hamilton Island and Byron Bay. Really, I’m just thankful that people seem to enjoy listening to me!

What is your favourite audience to play for? With my style of music, an audience that is willing to listen and be a part of the experience is generally glorious, but hey, an audience is an audience!

How do you combat pre-show nerves? To be completely honest, I don’t get nervous. I used to when I very first started performing, but I’m so used to it now that it really doesn’t affect me. I’m happiest when I’m on stage, performing, it’s home.

What is your favorite memory from your music career so far? There is absolutely no way I can pinpoint just one moment, but if I had to pick from all of my memories, it would be the people that I’ve met along the way and the connection that music has given us.

When you’re not playing music, what do you do?If I’m not playing music, I’m listening to it and if I’m not listening to it, I’m probably asleep.

Do you find it hard balancing university and music?I’m about to embark on a Bachelor of Music, so that shouldn’t be a problem!

What is your idea of a perfect Sunday morning?A drink of Chai, some chill music and a date with my guitar.

Who is playing on your iPod right now?Trevor Hall, Ed Sheeran, Brett Dennen, Passenger, John Legend, Newton Faulkner, MoZella, Justin Nozuka, Corinne Bailey Rae.. probably some of my favourites right now. But honestly, there’s a little bit of everything on there!

The music you listen to must influence you... who do you cite as your biggest inspirations?Honestly, everything influences me, all styles of music inspire me to sing and write in different ways. I don’t think I can really put it down to a few people who I’d call my biggest inspirations, I wouldn’t know where to start.

What can we expect from you in 2012?I’m not a big fan of the word expect. I just float, and follow the music. I’ll let you in on a little secret though.. 2012 will see me back in the recording studio and possibly back performing overseas!

Ginga Sushi Bar

Rating:

Food-4/5

Setting-4/5

Service-3/5

! Ginga Sushi Bar is one of those rare places that is cheap, but also really good. I frequent the place, and find it perfect for all occasions. From a quick dinner before catching a movie (Southbank Cinemas is right next door - infact there is an entrance inside the restaurant), to a first date or a catch up with friends.

! The food is generally great. A sushi train runs through the sushi bar, whilst you can also order meals in the restaurant next door, or pick a sushi plate from the menu, and one of the staff will find it for you. Take-away is also available! The sushi is definitely affordable, with the plate prices

displayed on the wall, so you can cater to your own budget.

! The one small complaint I have is the service. It is generally brilliant, but a few times my friends and I have been left waiting way too long for a dish to arrive.

! All in all, however, Ginga Sushi Bar is a fantastic place to go - especially for us uni students who go out to eat all the time, despite the fact we can’t afford it. You can find Ginga at 2/167 Grey Street, South Bank, or call them on (07) 3846 6484.! ! ! ! ! -T.x

Page 21: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

It’s the question that plagues us all when planning a big weekend. Brisbane or the Gold Coast? Fortitude Valley or Cavill Ave?

It’s the debate of home Vs. accommodation, somewhere familiar... or somewhere new? A place where you know people, or a chance to make new friends?

Each have their ups and their downs.

Here we will compare the two;The clubs, the prices, the scene, accommodation and the morning after...

-ACCOMMODATION-The main perk of partying here in Brisbane? No accommodation costs... and the comfort of your own bed after a (hopefully) big night of partying. Worst comes to worse, check out Bunk backpackers. Situated next to Birdees it’s the perfect, cheap place to crash, in the best location. On the other hand, it’s always exciting to stay away from home for the night. Whether it in a hotel or a backpackers, the fact that you are staying in a new, unfamiliar place always adds a good vibe to the night, and give it that holiday feel.

-THE CLUBS-Whether you choose to haunt Fortitude Valley or Cavill Avenue will, of course, have something to do with the quality of the clubs as well. Each location brings different cards to the table. The Valley, for most, will be familiar. If you’re a uni student, you will also most likely have special cards that get you into certain clubs VIP express... and this is always a perk. Waiting in line for entry into a club sucks... we all know that. However, compared to clubs on the Gold Coast, Brisbane has a limited array to offer. Gold Coast clubs are generally bigger, better and have more interesting and exciting themes. Much like accommodation, you have the added novelty of the unfamiliarity... the feeling of an adventure always increases the mood of the night out.

-THE PRICES-Here is where Brisbane is a clear winner... at least for us locals. As I mentioned above, those of us who go to university have VIP to a lot of clubs and pubs in both the valley and the city. On top of that, as locals, we know the places to go for cheap drinks, and what to get where, so you can get a stamp for later on and not have to pay the hiked up entry fees.

Page 22: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

Most clubs on the Gold Coast charge $10-$15 entry, and at certain places.. the cover charge gets hitched up to $20 around the midnight mark. However, there is one added bonus of the Gold Coast... party tours. These tours, such as Plan B or BackPackers Big Night Out, require an upfront fee, but once that is paid, the team takes you out for the night. You will receive entry into 3-4 nightclubs and a few free drinks at each...

-THE MORNING AFTER-This is the point where Brisbane and the Gold Coast are quit clearly set apart. When you’re hungover in the morning, and you need a cure... which

offers the best? In Brisbane you have the typical hungover haunt - Pancake Manor or an array of cafes, bakeries and restaurants. Or simply lying in your bed in the dark, forgetting the world. The Gold Coast, of course, has all of these too. With the only downside to the morning after at the coast being the fact you will have to leave your accommodation by 10am. If you have had a fantastic night... you still won’t want to be alive at this point. You’ll need somewhere soft, with soothing background noise. You’ll need something Brisbane doesn’t have... The beach! The PERFECT hangover cure. I don’t know about you, but for me, this has set the winner.

Page 23: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

-THE VERDICT-So, we’re down to the final decision... which one is best? Brisbane has home, familiarity, possible VIP entries. The Gold Coast, on the other hand, has the excitement of accommodation, party tours and the beach.

I think it comes down to what kind of a night out you want... Should you want your usual night out, where you know your way around, you’ll run into people and you want to go home.. pick Brisbane.

However, if you want that extra special night out (and are willing to pay a little more) definitely pick the Gold Coast. Staying in a hotel..... going on a party tour with potential new friends... beach... Who could resist?

I pick the Gold Coast! But, it’s all up to you. :)! ! ! ! -T.x

Page 24: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

While from the outside it may appear like your typical club, accommodating your typical Valley scene, do not be fooled. Birdees, located at 608 Ann Street, could easily be considered a world of its own. Originally inspired from a scene in the Peter Sellers film The Party (1968) its atmosphere is like nothing else in Brisbane. From a swimming pool on the rooftop to bathrooms lit by chandeliers, its décor maintains the 60s flair without feeling like you’ve walked into your grandmothers lounge room. But what really sets Birdees apart from its nearby counterparts, (apart from their famous fruit cocktails served out of sandcastle buckets of course) is that it has three split areas in one, which all cater for different audiences – which is perfect for when you have difficult friends with different tastes!

Rooftop   BarWith a very relaxed and casual atmosphere, the rooftop bar is the perfect place for a catch up with friends at just about any time, unlike some bars in the area limiting your visits to the weekends only. After getting a drink or three from the well-stocked and very reasonably priced bar, you’re spoilt for choice between pulling up a plastic chair at one of the many tables by the pool, a spot in one of the large Bali huts, or simply mingling in the back area watching over the adjacent Bunk Backpackers Hostel. Yes, that’s right, it’s adjacent to a backpackers hostel, so it’s never uncommon to make new friends with party animals from every corner, and there’s the option of somewhere to crash if you’ve partied a little too hard! Keeping with its unique décor, dangling above your head at the tables are swinging birdcages adding to the quirky but feels-just-right ambience of the rooftop bar.

Main   Dance   FloorBirdees has it covered when it comes to a good standard dance floor area. It’s big enough that you have moving space, yet small enough that you don’t feel like you’re walking through a testosterone jungle to find your friends. Of course, being Birdees, it’s not a regular dancefloor. Their sneaky designers have perfectly configured theirbathroom mirrors to face the dance floor so that if, like me, you dance more like Numa Numa than Nelly, you can see yourself before you get too carried away! The music varies with different genres, so if you’re the type of person that can only dance to RnB, Birdees isn’t for you. However if you love a mix of new and old, fun and dumb, then it’s ideal. Add to that the comfortable vintage lounges surrounding the DJ area with windows looking out over the city, and a bar that joins ontothe dance floor to minimise walking effort, the main dance floor has the perfect balance.

The   AviaryHidden upstairs from the main area is a delightful little place that you would swear was a complete different club altogether. I will admit, as a Birdees regular, that it took me many, many months to even realise it existed. The Aviary has a very different vibe to the rest of Birdees. It’s the kind of place where a cocktail would take preference over a corona. The eleven metre long onyx bar shines underchandeliers, while complimenting the Alice in Wonderland proportioned furniture surrounding the room. Not to mention it has probably one of the nicest bathrooms of the Valley area. The place screams decadence yet perfects practicality. It has a small dance floor (complete with patches of leopard print carpet) and the latest mainstream music videos playing from screens on the walls, though at a notably lower volume than downstairs. If you prefer being able to hear your conversations or just like taking things a little slower, combined with its enticing 60s charm, The Aviary would be the place for you.! ! ! ! ! -R.W.

“SpagBol Island”It wasn't an island made of Spaghetti

Bolognese. I just thought I should clear that up...

incase any of you were jumping at the thought of an amazing island adorned with mountains of Italian goodness. I

wish. No, this was an island in Crete,

Greece. It's real name is Spinalonga Island, but I was only 10 years old

when I visited... Spagbol Island was easier to remember. :)

At the risk of sounding painfully cliche, I'll set the scene. It was an amazing, sunny day and I wanted to stay at the hotel. We hadn't been in Greece for long, and the hotel was so enticing! It boasted the most beautiful clear blue pool, and a bar-tender that made me a special kids

'traffic-light mocktail', complete with plastic animals, coloured straws and umbrellas. But,

alas, at the request of my family, I boarded the tiny air-conditioning-less tour bus with an older

couple who was also staying in our hotel...

I don't remember the trip over to the island, I just remember that we took a boat - and that my dad was sea-sick, but that's no surprise, it

always happens. :) Once we got onto the island, we were surrounded by ruins, and the

tour guide told us the story of Spinalonga. Spinalonga was used as a lepar colony from

1903 - 1957, and the last inhabitant of the island, a priest, left in 1962. I remember that

there were two entrances to the island. One of them known as 'Dante's Gate', the leper's

entrance, named so because patients were unaware of what was going to happen to them once they arrived at Spinalonga. As sinister as this makes the island sound, the leper's were actually treated well once they arrived, being

provided with medical attention and social security payments, along with neccessities, like

food and water.Of course, this wasn't the only use of the

island. Spinalonga was present throughout Greek history, especially in the Cretan Revolt when the island was used as a Venetian fort.

But, I want this too be a travel story, not a history lesson so, alas, I will move on and

leave Google with the task of helping those of you who want to learn more. ;)

I have one prevalent memory of the island. There was a church in the centre of the island that the leper's used as a shrine. They begged and pleaded their god to save them from the

disease he had placed upon them, and mourned those who had already suscepted to the illness. As a part of this, the lepers made small bronze amulets signifying the infected

parts of their bodies. So, of course, there were countless amulets with images of arms and legs scribed upon them, and these hardly

affected me... it was those which had babies on that haunted me down to the bone. The

mood in the church was... I can't find the words to describe it... At only 10 years old I felt

something I've never felt again. I'm not going to try and describe it, because I simply can't.

I must say, I'm awfully glad I didn't stay in the hotel. My visit to Spinalonga Island is still with me today... the feelings I felt when I stepped

into that church almost haunt me when I relive the memories, whilst the ancient ruins I

witnessed are perhaps one of the key things that unleashed my passion for ancient history.

And who knows, maybe the island itself is responsible for the fact that I quite enjoy Spaghetti Bolognese? Doubt it... but who

knows? -T.x

City LightsA   Night   Under   the

The rules are simple...

Get together a group of friends. Get the last train into the city....

...and get the first train out in the morning. You’ll have about five hours to lose in the city.

Everywhere will be empty and quiet...

You get to change that.

Page 29: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012
Page 30: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

However cliche the saying may be, the best moments in life are

generally free.

My first over-night adventure in the city was entirely by accident. My friends and I missed the last train home after a night in the

Valley, and we were all too stingy to pay for a cab. So, we decided

to waste five hours in the city.

At first, it was a little awkward. We roamed the empty city streets with

nothing to do... but after a while we all ‘let go’. That’s the trick to

this kind of adventure.

The night was amazing. Some of my favourite memories of

Brisbane come from that night. We slow-danced in the middle of the city, and star gazed from King George Square. As the night drew

on, we found our way over to Southbank, and eventually

watched the sun rise over the Brisbane River. It was free, and...

it was incredible. -T.x

Bonkers   in   Honkers

I was never much of a shopper. I got bored easily trailing after my mum and older sister while they spent hours in the city browsing. But our recent holiday in Hong Kong seriously changed my perspective. I am now a confirmed shopaholic.

The entire notion of a girls shopping trip is just perfect. Trawling through market stalls searching for ‘the’ handbag, ‘the’ pair of sunglasses and any jewellery that takes your fancy is just too much fun. I became known as the Bartering Bitch from Hell, due to my ability to cut the price of an item down to less than half of what the shop keeper quoted. And

walking away grinning like the Cheshire Cat.

My most prized possessions are from Hong Kong. My orange Lanvin dress has been determined the Dress of the Season by Vogue and Marie Claire. Nearly all of my winter outfits consist of some element from Hong Kong, be it my Zara dresses, my vests and scarves from the markets or my jewellery from the shops. Particularly my Tiffany rings. I love rings. In Hong Kong, I bought 10 rings for a total of around $15 AU.

Best shopping experience. Ever.

Due to my complete inability to shop

straight for four days I insisted that we absorb the culture of Hong Kong. This consisted of visiting the Tian Tan Buddha at Lantau Island. We squealed on the cable car which was literally 500m above open water. Okay, perhaps I’m exaggerating….Although my aunt did feel the need to cross herself. I bought a Chinese straw hat and stood underneath the Buddha feeling serene. My life was complete.

Or so I thought…

My life was truly complete a few hours later when I met the cutest bartender ever. Floppy black hair, thick black glasses and serious skills at making strawberry Mojito’s for minors. He even did a pirouette for me. I was in love.

Another highlight was the Chinese restaurant Hutong on the 28th floor of Peking 1. We were seated at a private table, given dining slippers and waited on as if we were royalty. Best eating experience. Ever.

Although it might sound rather clichéd this shopping holiday seriously changed my life. It initiated my love affair with clothes and noodles and confirmed my decision to one day marry a Chinese man. Preferably a ballerina with floppy black hair and thick black glasses…

I don't think I'll ever be able to describe the way I felt when I visited the British Museum.

Ever.

My visit to the British Museum was the first time I had ever been close to Egyptian artefacts, and

for me this was such a big thing!! Let me explain...

Egypt is my thing. It always has been. It always will be. It's essentially my lifeblood, my passion, perhaps the very foundations of my soul? Few

of you will understand... most will think I'm crazy. :)

This is because of my Nana. She is my biggest inspiration in life, and although she is gone now, she still remains a massive part of my life -to the

extent that I am getting a tribute to her inked eternally into my skin in a few weeks. She went

to Egypt when I was about 2 years old, and when she returned to England she brought back postcards and souvernirs... I was amazed. She told me stories of Egyptian gods and showed

me pictures of tombs and pyramids. The feeling I experienced then was like nothing ever before

- I needed, needed, to know who the Egyptians were. I wanted to know what they built, why they

built it, why they wrote in heiroglyphics, what they thought,, how they were different to us... I wanted to know absolutely everything. As a

young child, Ancient Egypt captivated me... and that feeling has never changed.

When Nana passed, she left me all of her Egyptian things - amongst them was a scarab amulet that she had wore for as long as I can

remember. It is my single most treasured possession, and I doubt that that will ever

change.

ANYWAY! Back the the British Museum! When Mum and Dad told me that we were going

to England for a holiday, I demanded that we needed to go to the museum. In fact, I

remember telling them that if they didn't take me, I'd make the trip myself. (We were visiting Northern England, by the way, so we weren't

close to London at all.) So, near the end of our English adventure, we planned to visit London.

My parents fervently hate cities, so we were going to the museum and only the museum. No

arguments.

We awoke at 4am and piled into the car ready for our 3 hour drive down to London. I can't

even remember what the temperature was, but I remember it hurt.

A lot.

I slept most of the way, and when we got into London, we found a car park way too easily.

Everything was falling into place. :) It was a delightful -4 degrees - Welcome to England.

I was so so sooooo excited... When we got in there, it was... amazing. The

museum itself is a masterpiece. If the artefacts were removed and the building alone remained, I would

pay entry just to see it again.

My Favorite Place...On Ea(h

Page 35: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

We toured the whole museum, but there were only a few rooms dedicated solely to Ancient Egypt. While they were amazing, I was devastated. In my head I had envisioned towering Egyptian statues, but they

were no where to be seen..... yet. ;)

In the Egypt room we encountered countless artefacts; including mummies, canopic jars and

jewellery- lots and lots of jewellery... and not only mummified people either - no, no, no... mummified

animals too! There was a mummified Water Buffalo, Falcon, Ibis, Baboon and an Eel. 'Twas pretty cool, if

I may say so myself.

Some people were creeped out by the mummies, but I personally think they're pretty damn awesome. I mean... theres a body of an Ancient Egyptian... an actual Ancient Egyptian... right there, underneath

those wrappings... Can you imagine what that person would have experienced?! That person once

lived, breathed and saw Ancient Egypt in all of its glory.

I'm so jealous of that person lying there, encased in thousands of years old bandages.

I wandered these rooms encapsulated by the displays for what felt like only 20 minutes, turns out it was about an hour. I photographed everything, every

single little thing, hoping to relive my visit when I flipped through my photo albums but, of course, it

will never be the same.

We came across the other Egypt room by sheer chance. And I'm so so SO happy that we did.

One of the things I wanted to buy at the museum was a book that has essentially become my bible over the years, 'The British Museum Dictionary of Ancient Egypt'. Previously, I had been continually loaning it from the local library and copying out the pieces that intruiged me most, as the book was not

sold in Australia. As it is quite big and heavy, the postage charges from another country would have been almost painful. My mum and I found it in the

main gift shop, but the cover was all scratched and marked, and being quite perfectionist about the condition in which I keep my books, this simply

wouldn't do. So, I took to the map to find another shop, and found a book shop inside the museum. To

get to the book shop, we had to go through a massive room - but the map didn't say what was

within this room... turns out this room was an Egypt-lovers heaven.

Thankyou so much for scratching those books, unknown British Museum worker... without you I

wouldn't have found one of my favourite places on this Earth.

I vividly remember walking into the room.It literally took my breath away.

I was surrounded by statues, towering iconic Egyptian statues, the kind that I had dreamed about

seeing for over a decade. I can't even begin to describe what they were like... There were simply

incredible.

If there is ever a zombie apocolypse, THIS is where I am going. I want to - scratch that - need to live

there, and this is the only situation in which this will become possible. If any of you guys become

zombies, and come looking for me - that's not cool.

Ask...The Guy That Knows.

[email protected]

I’m one of those girls who is friends with more guys than girls. Recently, however, I have noticed I’m making all of the effort with my supposed best friend. I keep telling myself I’ll stop and wait for him to do something, but I cave in because I want to talk to him or see him. Is my friendship fading with him, or am I just over-reacting?

Well I think at this point you have to ask yourself the nature of your friendship, are you expecting too much from someone who is just a friend? Remember though, people grow apart naturally but also, and especially for best friends, sometimes a break is needed so that they can see their other friends and for you do the same. Over thinking it is a risk you run with that though. Give it time; you two are still friends regardless of how much you hang out.

I’m in love with two men. One of them is my ex-boyfriend, who wants me back... the other is my current boyfriend.... Both guys are amazing, and I don’t want to hurt either of them.. I just feel more spiritually attached to my ex. I don’t know what to do. Do you have any tips?

Plain and simple there’s a reason why your ex is your ex. Sure they could both be great guys but you have to remember you broke up for a reason. Talk your feelings through with both people, why does your ex want you back? Jealousy sometimes rears it’s head when others are happy.

I’ve been dating this guy for a few months, and we are really into each other. I am white, and my boyfriend is black. This isn’t an issue for me at all... but it is for my parents. I don’t want to lose them, but I don’t want to lose him either. What do I do?

Your parents will love you no matter what, they just care for you and could be a bit cautious. If he is a nice guy though then get them to meet him. If he can win them over they will have fewer reservations about it.

I finally got a date with the girl I have been in love with for years. I want this first date to be amazing... suggestions?

Honestly, be yourself. Take her to something different that sets you apart from other dates she’s been on; comedy clubs, or something adventurous like rock climbing is a great way to get to know someone and have a fun time.

I have always known exactly what I wanted to do with my life, since an early age. Now that I have got to uni to pursue this, I’m not so sure anymore. My family, friends and past teachers are expecting so much of me, and I’m scared of the consequences if I defer Uni for a semester to try and get my head together. I really don’t know what to do.

What’s the worst thing that could happen if you defer for a semester? You can always go back to Uni and it really doesn’t matter what anyone else but you thinks. It’s your life and it sounds like you have to start living it for yourself. Don’t be so afraid to speak up to people. At the end of the day make them understand this is for you.

half it/lose itThe Newest Dieting Trend

The rules are simple... only eat half of your food. Whether it is half a plate of spaghetti bolognese, or half of a chocolate bar. It’s easy and it works. What more could you want?

When comedienne Julia Morris moved to Los Angeles, she never imagined that would lead to her weight loss. Morris was told by her acting teacher that she should ‘consider losing some weight or putting some on’ in a bid to secure more acting jobs. “See in LA you’re either really fat or skinny and I was stuck in the middle”, Julia recently said.

Deciding that losing the weight was the healthiest option, Julia cut out carbs after 5pm and most sugars but “obviously not wine”, she joked. Furthermore, her meals she ate were cut in half. If she felt the craving for a mars bar, she would only eat half and throw the other half out; this is commonly known as the ‘better half diet’. This diet was researched last year by the American Dietetic Association and their study found that when lollies were cut in half, the less the college student test subjects ate, ultimately consuming fewer calories, sugars and fats; and the more they busied themselves with other tasks, such as a computer task which acted as a distraction. This mirror imaged a common scenario many uni students find themselves in daily - snacking on unhealthy foods whilst studying.

Excessive portion sizes has long since been counted as one of the 5 main reasons people put on weight; the others being eating unhealthy foods, eating too often, emotional eating and not enough exercise. The better half diet aims at only eating the ‘good’ stuff -

namely fresh, unprocessed foods and cutting out junk food. Secondly reducing portion sizes is a main goal. You may want to just reduce your normal portion size to half, or as Julia did, serve up what you would normally eat and literally cut it in half. Add an increased daily dose of exercise and track your weight loss and strictly stick to it - even when dining out.

Whilst body image and crazy yo-yo diets have become ‘hot topics’ in today’s media (even as I write this, a morning news program was doing a run through of today’s headlines and included a general diet story with other headlines such as

the upcoming elections, flooding in Western Australia and the influx fake 000 calls), the ‘better half’ diet is a healthy way to lose weight, encouraging not only portion control but increasing daily exercise; it’s not a diet but a permanent lifestyle change.

Julia is just one person that has tried this diet and succeeded; dropping 25kg in 12 months . There are hundreds, if not thousands, of success stories and lifestyle changes that this diet has provided to regular everyday people.! ! ! ! ! -B.H.

“As Julia did, serve up what you would

normally eat... and literally cut it in half.”

THE MONTH THAT WAS...In SportsFebruary: In Review

International Cricket

The Australian summer of cricket continued into February with two Twenty20 Internationals, followed by the Commonwealth Bank Series. All the momentum was with the Australian team, following the 4-0 demolition of India during the test series.

Game 1 of the Twenty20 saw the trend continue, with Matthew Wade starring on debut top scoring with 72 runs off 43 deliveries at the top of the order. Chasing 172 for victory, the Indians got off to a good start, keeping up with the run rate despite losing Virender Sehwag early on. David Hussey and Brad Hogg proved to be the difference, taking a combined 3/25 from 6 overs, effectively closing out the game. Australia won by 31 runs.

Game 2 saw the Australians struggle on their way to a meagre 131. Aaron Finch and Matthew Wade were the top contributors, adding 36 and 32 to the total respectively. Communication seemed an issue, with four batsmen being run out. The Indian chase was never in doubt, Gautam Gambhir top scoring for the visitors with 56. Making the total with two balls to spare, the Australian bowlers were made to look ineffectual, with only two wickets falling in the successful chase. India won by 8 wickets.

Making a return after a four year absence, the Commonwealth Bank Series began much the same as the rest of the summer – Australia romping to victory over India.

Marked by the One Day International debut of Matthew Wade and Dan Christian, Game 1 was reduced to 32 overs per side due to rain. Wade top scored with 67 from 69, and David Hussey chimed in with 61 not out, as

Australia compiled a challenging 216. In reply, Virat Kohli top scored with 31, with MS Dhoni adding 29 in what was an uninspiring chase. Australia won by 65 runs.

Game 2 saw the two touring sides clash at the WACA. Sri Lanka batted first, with Dinesh Chandimal (64 from 81) and Tillekeratne Dilshan (48 from 79) steering the total to a respectable 8/233. In reply, Virat Kohli smashed 77 from 94 to help steer India to a 4 wicket win, reaching the required total with 20 balls remaining. India won by 4 wickets.

Australia batted first against Sri Lanka in Game 3, Captain Michael Clarke top scoring with 57 from 88 deliveries. Some consistent scores from the rest of the line-up pushed the total to 231. Angelo Mathews was a major threat, scoring 64 from 76, as the Sri Lankans were bowled out for 226. Australia won by 5 runs.

Game 4 saw the next instalment of the Australian/Indian summer smash, with Peter Forrest scoring 66 on debut. Along with a 72 from David Hussey, Australia powered to 8/269. Chasing the highest total of the summer, Gautam Gambhir smashed 92 to lead India to their second win against Australia with two balls to spare. India won by 4 wickets.

Sri Lanka came into Game 5 looking for their first victory. Powered by Chandimal’s 81, Sri Lanka reached 236 from their allotted overs. Gambhir continued his resurgence with another 91, setting the platform for India. However, controversy was to reign supreme as a 5-ball over was bowled, seemingly costing India victory. Needing 4 from the final ball, spectacular fielding saw Dhoni only get 3 and fall short of victory. Match Tied.

Australia took on Sri Lanka in a rain affected Game 6, the visitors bowling superbly to restrict the Aussies to only 158 from 41

Page 40: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

overs. Sri Lanka was never troubled in the chase, Mahela Jayawardene finishing on 61 as they powered home with 16 overs to spare. Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets.

Domestic Cricket

The Ryobi Cup final will be played between South Australia and Tasmania at the Adelaide Oval on the 25th of February. The result could come down to who’s available for the Tigers, with several players currently on national duty. The Redbacks shouldn’t be counted out though. One lucky break can be a huge difference. Last time they played, the Tigers won convincingly. Look for a similar result.

The Sheffield Shield is in the closing stages of the competition, with the Queensland Bulls in the box seat for a finals berth. The final round of fixtures comes to a close on March 11, with the final to be played on March 16-20. Fast finishing Bushrangers will go close, but look for Western Australia to combat the Bulls.

NFL

February 5: Eli Manning picked up the MVP when he led the New York Giants to a 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots in Superbowl XLVI. The play of the game was a reception by Manningham on the sideline, gaining valuable yardage. Two plays later, Ahmad Bradshaw was unobstructed on his way to a Touchdown to give the Giants the lead. Tom Brady attempted a Hail Mary on the last play of the game, with Tight End Rob Gronkowski falling a yard short of what would have been a match winning play.

A-League

Gold Coast No-Longer-United? Anchored to the bottom of the table, the club suspended Miron Bleiberg indefinitely (who later quit) after ridiculing the decision to name a 17-year-old debutant captain, and the owner has come out and said he doesn’t even like the round ball game! Uncertainty over the clubs future remains and probably won’t be resolved until seasons end. Watch this space.Central Coast Mariners are outright leaders, ahead of defending premiers Brisbane Roar, Perth Glory and Wellington Phoenix. With

seven rounds left until the Finals Series, anything could happen from here on.

NBL

With five rounds left until the Finals series, New Zealand Breakers are in the box seat. The Gold Coast has been blazing away their opponents, helping themselves to a 5-game winning streak. With 5 teams battling to make the Top 4, this last month of basketball is going to be explosive.

Baseball

February 12: Perth Heat was crowned ABL champions following a 7-6 defeat of Melbourne in the final game of the Championship Series. Heat won the first game 4-1, before Melbourne bounced back in the second game with a 3-2 victory. Heats American pitcher Virgil Vasquez was named Championship Series MVP.

Coming Next Month

Super Rugby: After their fairytale run last season, Queensland Reds become the hunted when they seek to defend their title. Competition begins on February 25 when the Blues play the Crusaders at 5:30pm (AEDT).

NRL: Pre season is over, trials have been played, and it’s time for the season proper! The season kicks off when the St George Illawarra Dragons take on the Newcastle Knights, March 1 at 7:30pm (AEDT).

AFL: NAB Pre season cup is in full swing, and everyone wants to know how the Greater Western Sydney Giants will go. Kicking off the season, they take on the Sydney Swans on March 23 at 7:30pm (AEDT).

EndorphinsY&r Guide to Staying Smiley

WHAT YOU’LL NEED-Exercise! -Sunlight-Chocolate! -Spicy Food-Laughter! -Tears-Sex! ! -Sugar-Music

What are Endorphins?! Endorphins are hormones chemically similar to morphine - they increase your threshold for pain and effect your emotions positively. How? Certain activity, music, food are all triggers to release these ‘instant happiness’ hormones in your brain....Chocolate -Universally dubbed as the best comfort food, chocolate stimulates your brains pleasure pathways and causes the release of endorphins.

Sunlight -Overexposure to sunlight has be found to often trigger the release of endorphins... so get outside, and soak up some happy!

Exercise -Athletes often speak of a ‘runner’s high’, a feeling that they get when they push their bodies to the limit. This is because endorphins get released when you engage your body in strenuous exercise... so if you push your body beyond physical pain and your usual limitations, you may just score yourself a somewhat euphoric high.

Sex -When endorphins are involved, intense pleasure causes the same effect in the brain as intense pain. Therefore, a healthy sex life = endorphins!

Spicy Food -As strange as this may sound, spicy or hot food can often trigger the brain to panic and release endorphins. Why? Because it thinks your mouth is on fire, and you need relief. True Story.

Music- It has been found that thirty minutes of listening to instrumental or classical music releases endorphins, and is capable of causing effects equal to Valium!

Sugar - Eating something sweet and sugary has the same effect as chocolate does on the brain. However, be careful. Once the short-lived sugar rush is over, you can often be left tired.

Get Emotional -Researchers claim that your brain releases endorphins while you cry, in order to release pain. The same goes for laughter.. people effected by painful illnesses have found that ten minutes of laughter can cause around two hours of pain free sleep. -T.x

5AutumnMust-Haves

- S.S.

Autumn in Australia is an interesting season. You are stuck between Spring heat and the approaching Winter chills. And this, of course, mean a change of wardrobe is in order! The best way to keep down fashion spendings? Versatility. Pick versatile items that can be worn throughout the year, and save money too!

Australia never gets that cold, so (no matter how much we love them) move away from fur jackets and thigh-high boots, towards pieces that suit our climate.

A recent trip to Sydney gave me a taste of what’s to come this Autumn/Winter... Expect colour, ankle boots, prints and leather. Here are my tips on the 5 must-have pieces this Autumn. Enjoy!

5Rules for Autumn

-A.H.

Invest in a nice pair of chinos.

Chino’s are a classy and classic beach style look and have the added option of being versatile; slightly roll them up and you can get a casual look or if you want to dress them up add a nice boot or casual style footwear. Another bonus to that is they’re not as out of everyone’s price range as some would think. For Brisbane readers try DFO Jindalee’s Giordano store and you can grab a nice cut pair of Chino’s for $25. You’re welcome.

Go the check fitted shirts.

The all round look of the check shirt is possibly one of the most versatile pieces of clothing to own. Sleeves rolled up and there is still the look of class and professionalism, throw the shirt unbuttoned over a plain t-shirt and you’re ready for a day at the beach. For the best effect get at least three different colours and put them through your clothing rotation for either casual days or sophisticated evenings. For a wide selection of slim cut check on sale visit Admiral’s quarters at the top of Queen Street near the Casino.

Rule Number One Rule Number Two

We the male readers of -T.x, with a slight penchant for dressing up from time to time, have come to the conclusion

that as summer is leaving, the cooler months are approaching, and the fashion trends have to change. BRING ON THE AUTUMN

TREND.

To coincide with the 5 accessories women should have this autumn let’s look at 5 small guidelines for any male budget to

get that fresh autumn look at a reasonable price.

Page 49: -T.x Magazine - IssueOne - March2012

Layers can be a good thing.

Layering allows for a slightly more creative look this autumn, stick to the same lines on your clothing but feel free to clash some colours with a unique shirt or a hoodie to give you that more noticeable look. It’s alright to make your style stand out from the crowd from time to time.

The Deck shoe

Personally I wasn’t the biggest fan of the loafer deck shoe look. I like many others saw them as more an oddity. My rule at the time was if you’re wearing those shoes clearly you must own a boat. However, that said, they are becoming more and more popular as a casual wear style. Embrace it by going with a dark brown or tan tone or if you’re feeling creative try a red or blue. Hype has a great collection and can be found online (free delivery) or in one of their many stores.

Stick to the basics

The most essential and trusted piece, or pieces, of clothing in any mans wardrobe is the basic plain t-shirt. For best results always stick to the basic colours and you have a versatile, ready to wear piece of clothing. For wearing suggestions pair a plain white t-shirt with a pair of chinos and the classic ray bans; Versatility still at its best.
