Application for New Career and Technical Education Program and/or Course

The New CTE Program and/or Course application and directions have been revised as a result of new decade data for 2014-2024 and the availability of nonduplicated disaggregated employment data to use for labor market projections and duplicated data for use in career planning.

The application process ensures that new programs/courses comply with the Regulations Governing CTE, (8VAC 20-120).

The application may be submitted at any time of the year but must be approved by the VDOE prior to course implementation and including related budget items in the Perkins CTE Local Plan and Budget Application.

The revised application, directions, and a tutorial PowerPoint are available on the Program Administration & Management webpage under the heading, “Application for New Programs and/or Courses.”

Engineering Design from STEM Center for Teaching and Learning

Use of the Engineering Design curriculum materials by the International Technology and Engineering Education Association (ITEEA) STEM Center for Teaching and Learning will be explained by a trainer who has used these materials to teach high school engineering classes. The trainer will help teachers understand how the materials can be used for a 2-4 year engineering program. This Institute focuses on how engineers apply their creativity, resourcefulness, mathematical, scientific, and technical knowledge and skills in the creation or refinement of technological products/systems. A key approach will be the employment of a sophisticated, sequential, and iterative design and development process to solve authentic engineering tasks/problems. For high school teachers, 4 days, July 24-27, 2017.

Backwards Design Planning

Technology and Engineering Education educators attending the session will learn to enhance their current curricular and instructional practices by exploring the essentials of backward-design planning methods and multidisciplinary thematic focus of effective unit planning. Student learning, assessment, and classroom facilitation will be modeled in this session. In addition, teachers will receive two lesson units addressing Integrative STEM design challenges in transportation and structures. A self-contained technology and engineering education teacher can go back to his or her school division and deliver all the unit elements or work with colleagues to employ a team approach. Session length 8 hours, Monday, July 24, 2017, or Wednesday, July 26, 2017.

Systems and Controls at Virginia Technology and Engineering Education Association (VTEEA) Conference

This graduate level course is designed to prepare Technology Education teachers, Information Technology teachers and classroom teachers to work in teams to introduce students to the practical applications of computer control of devices and systems. The course is intended to help team members implement multi-grade level activities involving high school, middle school and elementary students.Teachers will be prepared for introducing students to practical computer applications for programming micro-controllers (MC’s), using the MC’s to control a range of devices and systems. The teams will use multi-grade level activities involving middle school students for sharing the above skills and for attending to concerns of cyber security and the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects. The course will be offered July 24-27 for 8 hours per day. Registering for graduate credit is optional.

Principles of Technology

Principles of Technology is a practical laboratory-based course that teaches physics concepts in the context of their relationship to four energy systems; mechanical, fluid, electrical, and thermal. This 4 day session will provide teachers with hands-on experience which will aid them in implementing the curriculum. Teachers will also develop supplemental activities and online grading techniques.

The professional development was held at Carver College and Career Academy, 12400 Branders Bridge Road, Chester, Virginia 23831, July 17-20, 2017.
