I wanted to create an indie-style video by using these techniques effectively, and to give it an old fashioned look. The first thing that I experimented with was a VHS filter. I downloaded this from YouTube so that I could make my footage look old and as if it were filmed on a camcorder. To make sure it was only an overlay and that it did not unbalance my video, I turned the opacity down to 30%. To also help create this camcorder effect, I decided to experiment more with my cinematography. I wanted my footage to be unstable and wobbly; therefore I did not use a tripod to record with. I also purposefully made badly filmed scenes to add to this effect. I also used a lot of camera movement to look as if I were walking and running with my actor.

Experimentation

For my music video I wanted to experiment with multiple different techniques that I have researched into by watching similar genre music videos.

To make the video suit the genre and the song, I used colour correction so it would make the video look cold and chilling. I changed the temperature and exposure and a few other minor details to create a better look for each part of my footage. I also decided that for the repeated shots I would put those in monochrome, a black and white effect which I felt fitted my song well.

I also wanted to use links to lyrics and links to music in my video. As my video had many pauses, I decided the best way to do this would be to create multiple blackouts in my video when it felt fitting. As well as this, I got my actor to copy the actions that were described in the lyrics. For example, when it said “roll up another cigarette”, she rolled up a fake cigarette.
