arm pounding (blocking) Toughening exercises in which

the partners bash their forearms to-gether to create better blocks.

Aikido-(Jap)- The Way of Harmonyin the Spirit.

Created by Morihei Uyeshiba, Aikido is considered asoft art, asthe basic concept is to go with anopponent. Originally derived from DaitoRyu Aiki Jitsu, the techniques of

Aikido were chosen more for theirspiritual content than their useful-ness. This resulted in a loss of data

which resulted in Aikido becomingboth mystical and impractical.

Aikido and the Dynamic Sphere-(book)-Westbrook & Ratti. This is the best book on Aikidoever written. The artwork is abso-lutely stunning in that it reveals thepurity of intention necessary to

    Aikido.

Al Case Born May 27, 1948, Al is theoriginator of the Matrixing concepts.

The basic arm positions thatenable the student to develop an un-bendable arm. There are four BAPs: low, mid-

dle, high, and circular, which canform ten combinations. The BAPswere the subject of early research byAl Case into the art of Pa Kua Chang.

beak A hand confi guration in whichthe back of the hand is raised and thefingers are brought together. This can

be a strike with the fingers, or ablock with the wrist. Also called, thelittle fist, beak, etc.

Beyond Hands A poem written by Al Case

which outlines the method of themartial arts.

black belt Belt rankings were originally de-rived from rankings for swimmers in1900 Japan. A black belt, in Japanese, is adan. Dan translates as man. Lesser ranking belts are kyu,

which translates as boy. Thus, a black belt was originally

a statement of maturity. With the commercialization ofthe art, however, belts began to beawarded according to ones ability tofi ght, as opposed to spiritual devel-opment.

    -B-

Babich, Robert J. (Bob) A 6th degree black Belt in Kang

Duk Won Korean Karate, Bob is theperson that Al Case attributes forhands on transmission of the art.

back change In Pa Kua Chang, steppingbackward on the circle. The normalpreference is to step forward, butone must be prepared for anything.

back stance Grounding occurring on the rearleg.

backwarditus The tendency of a beginner todo everything backward, that is, ifthe technique calls for a right arm, he

uses the left, and so on. While some-times frustrating, this is a good thing,it means the beginner has sur-mounted the fact of having a fifty/fifty chance of being right and is ac-tually initiating an action. The cure for a person (at anystage) unable to stop manifestingbackwarditus is to have him do the

mistake. Having been given freereign to do a mistake, the studentwill then be able to do the called fortechnique correctly.

    BAP-basic arm positions.
