The purpose of the TimeLinks Assessment book is to not only provide you with a

tool for measuring your students’ progress in the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill TimeLinks Social Studies program, but also to give you the opportunity to further your students’ reading and writing abilities. The book includes both unit tests and skills practice tests. It is orga-nized into the following sections:

• Check Understanding

• Reading Comprehension

• Write About It

Check Understanding assesses the unit content. Students will answer multiple choice questions and follow directions based on the content they have read in the TimeLinks text.

Reading Comprehension assesses stu-dents’ critical thinking skills. Multiple choice questions assess reading comprehension, while tasks completing pictures allow students to show more of their content knowledge.

Write About It pages prompt students to complete a writing assignment based on the content in the units. Each writing assignment

begins with a document, graphic organizer, frame, or other visual. Students can practice their writing skills by completing writing tasks based on these visuals and their content knowledge.

Unit Skills tests have items related to the Map and Globe skills in their TimeLinks texts. Students will complete multiple choice, draw-ings, and short answer questions to assess their understanding of these skills.

Students can complete all sections of the test at once, or they can respond to the writing tasks in a second test session. You may need to supply students with a separate sheet of paper on which to respond to each writing task.

The Answer Key section provides a writing rubric for each Write About It test in the book. You can refer to the chart for diagnostic pur-poses. The writing tasks are scored using a four-point rubric that focuses on grade-appropriate skill areas. The Writing Rubric provides task-specific descriptors to help teachers evaluate each student’s performance.
