fromtheangstandfearthatbothMaryandJosephmusthavefeltwhentheywerevisitedbytheangels.ThedaysandweeksoftraveltogettoBethleheminthelastmonthofpregnancycouldn’thavebeeneasyeither(Kendra,doyouwanttorideadonkeyforafewdays?)Andbymostscholarlyaccounts,thewisemenfromtheEastdidn’tarriveuntilJesuswasabout2yearsold.ThentheyleftbyadifferentroutebecauseoffearofHerod’sangerandretaliationatnotrevealingJesus’whereabouts.Butwedon’ttalkaboutthatmuch;thosethingsaren’tliftedupinthestorywetellandretell.Thereasonforretellingthestoryisnotforhistoricalaccuracy,buttorememberwhatGodhasdoneforus,thatGodcametoearthanddweltamongus–Emmanuel.WerememberthatGodcametoearthintheformofasmall,weak,vulnerablebaby.ButIthinkitmightbegoodtoremember,fromtimetotime,thehardship,angst,andfearthatMary,Josephandothersexperiencedandendured.ThecourageandstrengththattheyfoundwithinthemselveswithGod’sspiritempoweringthemtobeGod’sagentsintheworld.Otherwisewemightwonderwhenweencounterhardship,angstandfearifwearedoingsomethingwrongorifwearemisinterpretingGod’scall.Makingdecisionsaboutthedirectionsofourlives,discerningGod’svoiceandlivingasJesus’disciplesarenoteasymatters.PerhapsliketheChristmasstory,wehaveatendencytoshareourepiphaniesandstoriesoftriumph,rememberingsuccessesandwhenallthepiecesofthepuzzlecametogetherratherthanallthehardworkandperseverancethatwentintothosestories.Somewouldcallthishardworkthecostofdiscipleship,forothersitsspiritualdisciplines,butforallofusit’ssomekindofdiscernment,perseveranceandcommitment.InJanuary,theleadershipofthechurchwillgatheronaSaturdaymorningtolookatthecalendarfor2014andtogetherwewillworktodiscernwhereGodiscallingus.Ofcourse,therewillbecoffeeandfoodandwe’llplayalittleaswellaspray!Andwewillbalanceourvisioningwiththepracticalityofbudgets,timeandtalentsheets,andthepledgesthatwehavereceivedfromthecongregation.Ifyouhavenotyetturnedinapledgeortimeandtalentsheet,pleasecontactthechurchofficeandwewillsendyoutheappropriateformforyoutocomplete.Thereissomehardship,angstandfearinthisprocess,butaswemoveinto2014(theyearEdwardswillcelebrateits175thyear)Iamsurethatwetoowillfindwithinthemembersandfriendsofourcongregation,courageandstrengthwiththehelpofGod’sspiritempoweringustobeGod’sagentsintheworld.Godhasdonegreatthingsforus,inusandthroughus.Godiswithusandwillcontinuetodogreatthingsforusandinusandthoughus.Peacetoyou,PastorChristine

Whathappensinthere?Asoflastfall,wenowsplitintotwoagegroups.Afterabriefactivityorlesson,preschoolersandkindergartners,withtheirteachers,goacrossthehalltothe“Centers”classroomforage‐appropriateplay‐basedlearning.Olderkids,alongwithmeandothervolunteerleaders,thengetanopportunitytostudyourthemeatmoredepthwithgames,crafts,andreadingexercises.WegatheragainattheendofchapelformusicwithourChildren’sChoirDirector,ElaineLippert.

NelsonMandelawasrecognizedduringtheopeningprayerastheinternationalleaderhecertainlywas.Pastor’sReport:PastorChristinethankedthecongregationfortheiroutreachtoboththeJesseEvansfamilyduringtheirtimeofmourningandherownfamilyduringherinstallation.ShealsoremindedtheboardchairsoftheplanningandleadershipretreatonSaturday,January18,from9:00amto12:30pm.Treasurer’sReport:ElisabethNorwoodreportedthatthebudgetfor2013willprobablybebalancedasaresultofusinguptheTrusteesReserveFundandtheBuildingMaintenanceFund.TheSharingtheVisioncapitalfundgivingisexactlywhereexpectedatthistime.NewBusiness:Therewasadiscussionon“Intellectualproperty”andhowitconcernsourrecentlyretiredpastor,musicminister,andChristianEducationminister.Bycouncilvote,aletterwillbesenttoallthreespecifyingthattheywillbegrantedirrevocableandunlimitedlicensetoanyandallmaterialswrittenorotherwisecreatedbythemduringtheiremploymentatEdwards.TheletterwillalsostatethatEdwardsChurchwaivesanycompensationthatcouldresultfromuseoftheirintellectualproperty.Byvoicevotethemotionpassedwiththirteenyears,twonays,andoneabstention.BoardReports:Allboardsexplainedtheirworkinthecomingmonthsandpresentedproposedbudgetsfor2014.Worship:TherewillbetwoworshipservicesonChristmasEve.Thefirstwillbeat5:00pmandthesecondat8:30pm.Personnel:ThepersonnelboardispreparingaPersonnelManualforallhiredemployeesofthechurch.Itwilladdressthingslikejobdescription,workandvacationtimes,anddutiesassociatedwithaspecificjob.SocialJusticewillinitiateanewprogramcalled“Talkitup.”Therewillbeinformaldiscussionsafterchurchduringcoffeehouronissuessuchasstrengtheningourdemocracy,windpowerelectricity,foodchoices,healthcareandgunviolence.TheMissionboardreportedthatEndowmentdonated$1,000fordisasterreliefinthePhilippines.TheNominatingcommitteereportedontheirprogress.Manypositionshavebeenfilled,buttherearestillvacanciesonsomeboardssoifyouhavebeenoverlooked,pleasecontacteitherShirleyJohnson,VanLewis,orDickJirusandtellthemofyourdesires.

Stewardship…

StewardshipReportThereportedresultsof thestewardshipdrivefor2014havemuch forwhich tobe thankful.Thirty‐one of our pledging units haveincreasedtheirpledges.Theaveragepledgeisnow$2,352,a4%increasefrom2013. Thereare13newadditionalpledgingunitsfor2014.Greatnews…butthere’sstillanopportunitytodomore!

Godcallsthechurchtoengageinministryandtobestewardsofall thatwehavebeengiven. Wegivetosupporttheprograms,ministriesandoutreachthatwebelieveGodiscallingusto. ThecongregationofEdwardsisengagedinawiderangeofactivitiesinsupportofGod’swork—andallofthoseprogramsandministrieshaveacost.Weneedcongregationalgivingtobeabout$15,000highertomaintainourprogramsatthesamelevelas2013.

The stewardship campaign will continue until January, when we finalize the 2014 budget.MembersandfriendsofEdwardsUCCareaskedtoprayerfullyconsidertheirongoingsupportoftheseministriesandprogramswiththeirtime,talentsandfinancialresources.FinancialStatisticsthroughNovember

In January, the congregation approved a budget with deficit of $8,085. Through November,expenses are running$6,145belowbudget, but congregational giving is $14,879belowbudget.NovembergivingwasaffectedbytheSundayofThanksgivingweekendfallinginDecember,andDecembergivinglookspromisingsofar. Wewillbeusingsomereservefundsandnotmakingasabbaticalcontributiontonarrowthedeficit.PleasebeasgenerousasyoucaninfulfillingpledgesandmakingotherdonationssothatEdwardscancontinueintheministriestowhichwehavebeencalled.

Mission…

Wemaysometimeswonderiftheannouncementsinchurchareimportant.RecentlytheMissionBoardinformedthecongregationaboutthewebsiteaddressfordonationstotheUCCreliefeffortforthePhilippines.Aftertheservice,welearnedfromamemberoftheEndowmentFundcommitteethatfundswereavailableforsuchemergencies.FollowingarequestfromtheMissionBoard,adonationof$1000fromtheEndowmentFundwasapproved.ThisisanexcellentexampleofEdward'sactivemissionprogramwhichsupportsbothlocalandworld‐wideefforts.QuadCitiesCROPHungerWalkDespitechilly,overcastweather,the42ndannual2013QuadCitiesCROPHungerWalkwasanothersuccessfulwalk.Wehad563walkersrepresenting45faithgroupsandotherorganizationswhohaveraised,todate,justunder$40,000.I’mcertainmorewillbecominginandwe’llremaininthetop10%ofthewalksnationwide.Asmostofyouknow,allmoneycollectedgoestohelphungerprogramslocallyandglobally.

ThewalkerswereletatthestartbyFredSiebenmann,whoat85yearsoldwasparticipatinginhis40thCROPWalk.LojoRussoprovidedwonderfulmusicduringtheregistrationtimeandsetagoodbeatforthewalkerstobegintheirjourney.Rev.RandallSureyprovidedtheinvocationandlocaldiscjockeyDaniLynnHowecongratulatedandencouragedthewalkers.
