This month happens to be a time of tension as "future/ bhavishyam" of our

children depends on how well they do in the exams. As this Panguni issue goes to the press half of the board exams would have been over.

I am reminded of my own experience and how I handled the tension which may

be of help and assurance to parents and students alike. It must be over 50 years and

exam was the school final. Having well prepared much in advance, just before the exam day, it appeared to me that I was grossly underprepared. I seemed to have forgotten all

that I learnt to set off a panic. I confided to my mother like any child. My mother had remembered that

Hayagreevan Beeeja slokam would help in such a situation and gave me the stanza in the book to

read. That was my first parichayam if our Acharayan. It must have been His (swami Desikan Thiru Ullam )

and His ways of initiating me to the sampradayam . How I could do very well in that exam and

Other exams is history, but the point I want to

mention is that we are so fortunate to have the most

potent and powerful mantharam propounded by the Acharya who was in turn taught by the Garuda Bhagavaan.

Our Acharyan out of His parama Karunai has given us the Hayagreeeva stotram,

his own Anubhava of the Lord Hayagreeva who was Pratyaksham to Him. What else can

we ask for?

Adiyen was fortunate to seek the blessings of Parakala Matam Swami in January

at Thoopul and briefly discussed with Him the renovation of the Matam at Thoopul. It has been a project that adeyen has been thinking about as it needs to be redone completely

without destroying the pracheeyanthvam. Kumudam AMR was also there at the same

time to discuss the same project. The Thoopul Parakala Matam is one of the oldest and birth place of that lineage. It is our joint kadamai to assist in whatever way we can.

Adeyen will circulate the appeal when the same is launched. I thought that if the project work can be split into smaller units like sponsoring a few sq ft for each individual, it will

be easily understood and each of us can have the thrupti of physical help. Suggestions are welcome.

Nanganallur Sri. Venkatesan

Sri Dasavatara Sannidhi at SriRangam houses in its sanctum sanctorum the icons of

the ten main incarnations of Lord Vishnu.It is the prized possession of the Sri Ahobila

Mutt.It lies on the southern bank of the holy river Kollidam (vada kaveri).

Usually the Dasavatara images are to be found sculptured in temple pillars. A separate

shrine for the Dasavatara Perumal is indeed unique. The management and ritual control of

the shrine is with His Holiness the Jiyar of the Sri Ahobila Mutt since 1734 when it was

offered as a Guru Dakshina to His Holiness Sri Van Sathakopa Sri Narayana Yateendra

Mahadesikan – the 18th Jiyar by the then Koil Kandhadai Annan Swami. The Koil Kandhadais

were the hereditary trustee and sthalattar of the SriRangam Peria Koil.

According to traditional accounts, Tirumangai Azhwar, the last of the twelve azhwars arrived

at Sri Rangam and found the big temple in a bad state of neglect. He then earnestly set

out to perform the stupendous task of renovation of the Peria Koil. The work lasted sixty

years. During that long period Azhwar had to stay along with his labour force. They

decided to stay on this piece of land where now the Dasavatara Sannidhi is. Thus Azhwar

restored the glory of Sri Ranga Sri. Lord Ranganatha was much pleased with Azhwar’s hard

work and bestowed him to ask for a boon. Azhwar prayed that the Lord might be pleased

to reveal the aprakrita forms assumed by Him in His ten incarnations. The Lord fulfilled

Azhwar’s by a vision in which Azhwar saw the splendid Avataras of the Lord. This brought

about a poetic outpouring from Azhwar who sang

Meenodu Aamai Kezal Ari Kural Aay

Munnum Iraamanaay,Taanay,pinnum Iraamanaay

Daamodranaay Kalkiyum aanaan

When the Azhwar woke up from his trance he found to his astonishment the forms had

turned into stone icons. The Azhwar

took the next step of building a shrine

to these icons and thus consecrated

them.

Swami Desikan wrote the

Dasavathara Stotram keeping these

icons in mind. After all Swami Desikan

imbibed the teachings of Kaliyan

(Kaliyan urai kudikonda karuthudaiyon)

Rituals and festivals are performed as

ordained in the Pancharatra Shastram. It is interesting to note that Injimedu Azhagia Singar

(42nd Jiyar) was initiated into sanyasashramam here. Prakritam Azhagia Singar (46th Jiyar) too took his preksha mantram here.

Sriyapati the creator keeps Himself busy by assuming different roles to suit the place and time. He does

with great alacrity. Anything to be close to His created beings was His Tiruullam.

Our Swami Desikan celebrates these avatarams in his Dasavatara Stotram where He says that it was His

desire or Ichcha to be a Matsyam, or a sportive Tortoise, a gigantic Varahan, Impulsive Adbhuta Kesari, Raksha

(protective) Vamana, rosha or angry Parasurama, Karuna Rama, or the plough wielding Balarama, or the playful

Krishna.

It is only in Krishna Avataram that Krishna

becomes the messenger and the Lord for Pandavas.

In Geetartha Sangraham Swami Desikan celebrates

Krishana as Dhootanum (Messenger) and

Naathanum (Supreme Lord). Swami Desikan in his

Panniru Thirunaamam calls Athigiri Perumal as

Dhoothanum Naathanum as He is Kannan on top

of Karigiri.

For adiyars like us Swami Desikan is our Dhoothan and Naathan. Swami Desikan’s avataram was on the

uttama naal Purattasi Shravanam when Lord Thiruvengadamudayan took His avataram.Swami Desikan in none

other than Lord Srinivasa of the Tirumalai. His son Swami Nainaacharya himself calls him an avataram of Lord

Srinivasa. The humanly impossible task of writing more than 120 granthas in a span of one hundred and one

year, the Paaduka Sahasram which was written in one and a half hour (oru Yaamam) early morning, the magnum

opus Rahasya Traya Saaram, Krishna leelas in Yaadhavabhuyam the list goes on. Our Swami had not left untouched

any topic under the sun. Be it geography or astrology or food and nutrition. If he has not touched a topic then

that is irrelevant and worthless for mankind. His avatara rahasyam came out in front when He was challenged

by a mason or a snake charmer or a sculptor. Indeed He is Our Naathan.

Swami Desikan was a Dhootan par excellence. The very fact that His avataram was that of an Acharyan

goes to prove that He wants to be our Dhoothan. He hid his superhuman qualities and played the role of a

Sadaachryan. Just like Ramapiran hid his superhuman qualities and played the role of an obedient son, a gentle

householder, a king and an ordinary human being going through pain and suffering like us. Swami Desikan too

plays the role of an obedient son, an ideal sishyan, a householder, a good father and above all a Sadaacharyan.

As an acharyan He lowers himself to our level so that He can lift us up. The Sharanagati Shastram of Sri

Ramanuja was made easy by Swami Desikan. Like a beacon light carrying messenger Swami Desikan took all the

Sri sukthis of Sri Ramanuja and

made it easy for everyone to go

through. He took the Tamil

Vedam Naalaayira Divya

Prabhandam and gave it the

place it deserved in Vedic world.

He wrote many treatise on it

much to the delight of

Paramaikaanthi scholars.

Whether writing the Sri Bhashyam Vyakhyanam or saying it thirty times, whether saving the grantha Sri

Sruta Prakashika or saving the children of Sri Sudarsana Suri or leading an ideal life of a true Srivaishnavan Our

Swami was exemplary. Indeed He is the true Dhoothan who can take our application for Moksham to the Lord.

Sometimes adieyen wonders if He is VenkataNayaki or Daya Devi who has come in the form of an Aacharyan.

Just as Daya Devi of Tiruvengadamudayan makes her Lord forget the sins committed by the chetanas Our Swami

too makes the Lord of the Seven Hills forget our acts of omissions. His Karunai Kataksham alone is enough for

the Lord to forgive our trespasses and take us into His fold.

Our Swami is like Sri Aanjeneya the Nava vyakarana pandit who is a Chiranjeevi Aacharyan. Sri Aanjeneya

takes the ring from Sri Ramapiran and meets Sri Sita. Our Swami Desikan compares Sri Sita to our atma and

the ocean which was surrounding her as the samsara sagaram. Ravanan with his ten heads are our ten indriyams

which make us do all apacharams. On Sri Aanjeneya’s arrival Sita roopi atma gets redeemed. Swami Desikan has

called it as a Nyayam or a maxim. In other words our atma can only be redeemed by the connection of a

Sadaacharyan and that Sadaacharyan tells us about the Lord and also the Lord comes to know about us just as

Sri Anjeneya did .Had Sri Aanjeneya not been in Valmiki Ramayanam Sri Sita would not have come back to Sri

Ramapiran.Our status too would be the same had we not got Swami Desikan to guide us.

If Sri Aanjeneya is Kesari Nandan Our Swami is Kavi Kesari.Sri Aanjeneya carries the Sanghu and Chakram of

Perumal in Cholasimhapuram

Gist : Folding both the hands with devotion I pay obeisance to the preceptor, who is a lion among poets and logicians, a Mandara tree for those who go to him for refuge, and whose compositions are interspersed with profuse charm of the Upanishads, give appropriate blows to the opponents and are well known.

It is indeed great pleasure to learn about the recitation of all Desika Stotra patas in Mumbai. Even in Muscat we are planning to do the same. This will be an eye opener for us that stotras can be recited in 4.30 hours duration. At the earliest before this summer vacation, recitation of all Desika

Stotras will be done by Swamin’s anughraham.
